Spatial Self-Mapping for the Scatterbrained

I am designing a project for about 10-20 undergraduate students (mostly traditional students but some non-traditional) where each will be asked to track their movements for a couple of weeks. Is there an easy, secure, mobile app for both Android and iPhone that will provide consistent location data in a reasonable format? Preferences would be for an app that doesn't drain the battery and one that allows you to set the interval for recording points. Nice but not critical would be some kind of reminder to record what they were doing at that time. [more inside]

Physical movement-based practices for grief?

I'm nearing the two-year anniversary of my dad's death, and a close friend just lost a family member in a tragic accident. As I remember my dad and support my friend, I am craving some sort of movement-based grief ritual - an active dance, set of motions, physical practice, to do with others, potentially at my (UU) church. Male video game character mapped onto female character movements

Help me find this video or gif that I can't seem to locate with google. Sometime in the past year I've seen either a video or an animated gif where someone made a hack that put a male character skin on a female video game character. [more inside]

Bed movement is disrupting our sleep and making me cranky, what to do

My boyfriend's mattress is about 6 years old, and he's a tosser. When I sleep over and he tosses and turns it keeps me up, and it sucks. I'm not sure if it's the mattress or the boxspring - he thinks mattress. Let's say getting a new mattress is not in the immediate future - will a memory foam cover help us? Is there any thing else you can think of? I'm guessing not really, but sometimes there are innovative suggestions around here. [more inside]

Was/am professional activist organizer. Giving it up. Need help.

For the last 7 years or so (since graduating from college), I've been a professional political organizer, essentially, working for progressive movement organizations doing primarily new media/online media/digital work, but also spending time on fundraising, action planning, communications, and a few other things as needed. After a lot of thought and consideration, I'm starting to suspect that I can no longer work as part of the left (or at least, my corner of the US left) and still be emotionally healthy with the stress I deal with all the time. I don't know what to do next. [more inside]

Can You Help Find the Missing Pieces in These Playlists?

Dance "textbook" for different qualities of movement

I am at the stage in my dance hobby in which I am trying to go beyond individual moves into dancing those movements in a way that evokes a specific feeling. Whether it's assertive & funky, soft and flowing, or happy and excited--I need to learn how to use my body to convey different moods. I'm taking private lessons, but are there written resources like textbooks or handbooks that walk through basic principles like "here's what makes arm or leg lines look confident, this is how to make a movement look quieter, etc."? I do partner dancing but resources for any style of dance are welcome.

Fun/rewarding exercise with a focus on controlled movement?

I've never thought of myself as being in good shape, but lately I've noticed that I'm not just weak or slow, I'm also pretty uncoordinated. Now that I see it just I keep seeing it everywhere in my life, and it really bothers me. My movements are pretty twitchy and momentum-based, rather than being deliberate, something I could stop in the middle of at any moment. I want to fix this. When I think of activities that could help me develop that kind of control, I think of like martial arts, or yoga, or something, but I don't really know. I'd love to hear some suggestions. Did the transatlantic union merger mean anything?

Two years ago the American United Steelworkers and the British UNITE merged to form what was then referred to as a transcontinental "super union". I can find all sorts of articles before and just after this occurrence, but very little follow up. This isn't particularly surprising: Labor news in the U.S. barely gets any coverage. But does anyone know how the merger turned out? [more inside]

Teach Myself to Hit The Toilet at the Appointed Time

I want to practice yoga early in the mornings. But it's got to be after bowel movement. Problem is, my bowel movements, though quite regular in terms of daily-ness, occur at odd times. Sometimes I have to wait 2 or 3 hours after waking, and that throws off the whole sched. I also need to do yoga on an empty stomach, so eating something to stimulate the bowel movement isn't a solution. And I don't like coffee or cigarettes. I do try to keep a regular sched, waking/sleeping at approximately the same time each day. So....do I have any other options for teaching my body to do its bizness first thing upon waking?
