I haven't ridden offroad for more than 20 years. Please help this large, slow, stately cyclist get his mountain bike on.

Which low/mid range mountain bike should I get? I'm a reasonably serious road rider, but now find myself living in an area where the road biking leaves a lot to be desired (and, frankly, the local drivers and roads have me worried for my safety). The mountain biking is supposedly fantastic, so I'd like to give that a try. I'm not looking to do jumps, but am happy ascending and doing controlled descents. This will be an off-road only bike used near Albuquerque, NM.

I commute to work by bicycle, and I've noticed that my shoulders and neck are often sore at the end of my 45-minute ride. What am I doing wrong?

I am looking for a cross-country bike for use in a mountain-y watershed area. I am not a skilled or graceful descender, and there is going to be a lot of descending. Bike shop guy, who I have known for a while and trust, says hydraulic discs are the way to go because of how they handle heat. Is this really a factor I should account for?

I just bought a mountain bike on the cheap and want to make some changes, namely adjust the shifters (or perhaps change them altogether), and replace the handlebars. Is this a rookie-doable project or should I take it to a shop?

I remember ads from maybe the late 90s / early 2000s in bike magazines (especially mountain bike magazines) from Camelbak. These were fullpage ads, with a caption something like "Sweat out your demons -- refill with H2O." The one I remember distinctly had a photo of a mountain biker on a Utah-esque rock drinking from the Camelbak. Anyone know where I could get copies of these?

I want to buy a mountain bike. I have a nice, fast, light hybrid but it doesn't cut it on anything but the easy trails. I think I'll buy used but have no idea what to get.
