looking for noirish novels/stories etc. that take place in the 70s - that might could involve a male protagonist dealing with a 'seedier' side of western living (motels/ dive bars etc.)

I am going to New York for 4-5 days towards the end of October and need cheap accommodations. A shared bathroom is no biggie but I am too old for anything that veers towards the hostel side of things. It needs to be in Manhattan. I am male by the way if that makes a difference. Thank you for any suggestions.

I am helping to plan a trip to San Francisco in September for a doctor from Kenya, for a conference. All the cheaper hotel rooms bought in a block by the conference organizers are taken. Where can he stay relatively cheaply that's not too far from (or too complicated to travel to) the Moscone Center?

Does anyone know of any inexpensive motel list sites that specialize in mom and pop motels and weekly rates and let you search by price?

We're going to be visiting Boston for a few days, starting tomorrow (Sunday). We'd like to avoid traffic and parking issues by staying in the outskirts and taking mass-transit into downtown to see the sights.
We're looking for a hotel or motel that is pleasant, clean and fairly inexpensive (less than $125/night IF possible). Any recommendations?

Have I got the right budget for my LA->SF drive? What are the hotels / motels really like? Are there any "bargain" towns or price blackspots?

I want to travel to Sanibel or Captiva Islands - I am looking for accommodation, but I find it very hard to make a decision based exclusively on online research. I would welcome any advice on where to stay.
I am not very fond of big chain hotels like Holiday Inn's etc.... I much prefer small motels or self-catered cabins, but I am afraid to book a shabby place because online everything looks pristine..... so, ideally I would love to find a small motel or cabin by the sea, in a quiet part of town. Another thing to consider is that I am traveling with my parents and our baby, therefore I am looking for places that have a apt-like layout, with ideally the choice of one or two bedrooms and a kitchenette.
Any advice on this and other must-see, must-eat, must-do attractions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to plan a weekend in Wildwood, New Jersey next month for my boyfriend and I. I've never been there but I have a friend who is spending the summer there, and we're going down to visit her. She's given me the numbers of a few places to stay, and I've looked online and it seems like everything I come across are retro motel-type places. This is fine, but I wanted to know if there's any place out there that's better than the others, or if there's any specific place that I should definitely stay away from. I'm just looking for a place to stay that's comfortable, safe and clean.

Road warriors: what do you do when you're staying at hotels and their network blocks traffic on port 25? It's frustrating to not be able to send email, and SquirrelMail as an alternative to Mail.app in OS X isn't quite good enough for me.
