need some pointers as to research strategies/leads to find out about the state of the art knowledge about the moon in 1878, with particular reference to things arising in or popular in the French scientific community. First thoughts are Times digital archive and to look for an encyclopaedia of similar date. Any leads appreciated.

Is it possible for a moon to have an orbit such that it is only ever visible from its planet during daylight hours? If so, what are the necessary requirements for this to happen?

DrunkenSciFiFilter- What would happen if a human being, dressed in only like a tee shirt and let's say some cargo shorts, was suddenly on the surface of the moon? Details!

After a long and ridiculously heated quasi-scientific discussion last night, I absolutely must know: what would happen to life on earth if the moon suddenly disappeared? I say the results would be disastrous, but my friend doesn't think it would matter much. I'd be interested to know who is more accurate in her assessment and the specific problems associated with a moonless earth.
