Youth Passions Research in Montreal

If you had one year to dedicate yourself to researching how young people's passions and interests can be supported and encouraged, what would you do? Bonus points for Montreal-related responses. I'm planning to apply to the Sauve Scholars program, a one-year fellowship based in McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where you are given full support and resources to research, study, and work on a project of your choice. I would like to use the year to come up with a project plan for resources that help young people find support for their passions and interests - mainly from a Malaysian perspective, as there's nothing there, but involving research into how young people are supported in other countries.

We need to come up with a plan for our project - what we want to investigate, how we're going to go about it, how we can use local resources to help us. With a topic like this, it can be pretty broad, so I'd like some ideas for actions I can take to support my research for this one year.

What sort of research would you do? Who would you want to look up? Where would you volunteer or work? I don't expect specific names (Though that'd be great!!) but things like "You should look up what their relevant youth policy is and find government agencies that work with young people" or "Find a Malaysian Students Society to interview" are the things I'm after. If you've worked in a venture that does exactly this (support young people's passions), what sort of work did you do to form and maintain your venture?

I've been getting a lot of "ask the young people themselves", which is what I'm doing too, but that's not something I need the fellowship to do. I'm more interested in finding out what resources are available in Montreal/McGill that I can tap into.

Please don't let me live in a box!

Montreal Housing Crunch Filter: I still don't have an apartment and I'm supposed to show up in Montreal in two weeks. How the heck do I nab a place for a single female McGill student, when I'm out of province? This is moving into panic time. I've scoured the McGill off campus housing and so far found one place that turned out to have only a hot plate and bar fridge for its fridge and stove. Other places I've liked, that I've found on Craigslist, were snapped up before I called, so it's starting to become crunch time.

I'm looking for a place starting September 1st, either walking distance from McGill, or conveniently on the metro line. I can't afford to spend more than $550 a month including utilities, and it needs to have an actual oven/stove and not be a semi basement on a high traffic street (which tends to lead to gentlemen peering in the window). A bonus would be a closet, double bonus, a balcony or a sunny window. I’d like to not get broken into on a regular basis, too.

I have a few problems:

1)	I’m not in the city. An overly busy boyfriend can sometimes see apartments, but only a limited number of hours a week and he is hard to schedule with.
2)	I don’t have previous landlord references, as I’ve only ever lived at home before. My bosses all liked me though, and would be happy to provide glowing employer references.
3)	I only read French and can’t keep up with a conversation with a francophone landlord.
4)	I can’t call long distance from work, and I work an 8:30AM to 5:00PM gig five days a week.

So I’m getting pretty desperate. Is there anything I’m not considering? Please help me figure this problem out so that I can start asking mefi questions about how to decorate instead of freaking out about finding a fridge box.

I have seen a few other questions on here but they seem to revolve around the maritimes.
Mattress Filter: Where to buy a double mattress and/or bed in Montreal? I’m a starving student, and this September I want somewhere comfortable to sleep when I relocate to McGill. I’m not made of money, but metafilter has scary bedbug stories and a $200 Ikea foam job sounds uncomfy.
On the other hand I don't want to be the student who buys a house full of furniture full price, which later needs to be flogged when (s)he relocates in two years.

So, where can I get a comfy bed setup and how much should I expect to pay?

Plan our trip to Montreal this August 5-ish to 12-ish. Where should we stay? Where should we eat? What should we do?

My wife and I are going to Montreal for a week as a late honeymoon. We were thinking spending half the time at a hotel and half the time at a B&B. We don't really have anything on our agenda, just exploring the city. Send your recommendations!

Where to go near Montreal for a "Bro Weekend"? A friend and I (both dudes) want to get away from Montreal for the weekend and hang out. This is a bonding experience.

I am pretty sure we want to camp and I would like to go somewhere to experience rugged beauty. Or just something awesome.

This is not a pick-up weekend. We are leaving the significant others at home.

So any suggestions for where two late-twenties males should go near Montreal for the ultimate bonding experience? We will rent a car but not anything that is capable of off-roading.

Visiting Quebec to try and fake French for a week. What should we make a point to do/visit/eat? My boyfriend and I are visiting Quebec to try and fake French for a week. What should we make a point to do/visit/eat? We will be staying in a timeshare, Lac Morency in Saint Hippoyte. Its about 3 hours from Quebec and 1 hour from Montreal (we will be driving our car). We're hoping to do some outdoor activities while we are there (fishing/hiking/biking) and do a few day trips to Montreal and Quebec as well. Our budget is relatively conscious but flexible. Any suggestions of some fun things to see or do or a great place to eat? We are easy-going, love good beer/scotch/wine, love good food (Eggs Benedict here I come), and aren't necessarily into the tourist scene. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Bands to see in Montreal

What bands to see in Montreal from the 19th - 24th? I'll be in Montreal until the 25th, arriving tomorrow. I like seeing live music, especially so in small clubs. Any recommendations on whom to see and where?

Bands I've been listening to lately that I like: electrelane, Neutral Milk Hotel, Entire Cities, Basia Bulat, Belle and Sebastian, Camera Obscura, The Clash, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Love is All, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Devotchka, Dick Dale, Elvis, The Ramones, Weston.

120 film processing in Montreal, Canada

Where can I develop 120mm colour film in Montreal, or by mail order to Canada? I'm thinking about purchasing a Holga camera, but I don't know anything about developing 120 film. My main concern is convenience, so I'm looking for a drop off location either downtown or easily accessible by metro. Popping an envelope in the mail would be even simpler, if there is a developing place that charges reasonable rates for Canada.

Montreal during the Jazz Festival

Should we go to Montreal during the Jazz Festival? Or will it be "too crowded" if we're not super-into jazz? We're not huge jazz fans, although we'd certainly check out a concert or two while we're there. I'm mostly concerned with crowds and traffic. If we stay, say, downtown, will we have trouble driving into the hotel due to road closings? Will we be miserable riding the Metro? Will the streets and restaurants be overrun with unwashed jazzheads?

There appear to be plenty of available hotel rooms in the city, so I'm guessing that things should be okay, but I just want a sanity check before we make any arrangements. Thanks!

(I've read all the great Montreal travel questions, too, but, of course, any new suggestions of awesome, possibly Jazz festival-time-specific things are welcome.)

What is this strange noise?

What is this strange, seemingly bird-related noise? On a few occasions during the night last summer, I heard a strange, low-pitched noise at rhythmic intervals from the courtyard window of my apartment in Montréal, Canada. At first, it seemed like a percussive sound, as if someone was hitting a large plastic trash bin. I was intrigued by its rhythmic regularity, but overall it did not appear to be caused by a human, and I could not identify the precise nature of the sound. I don't remember this noise occuring during the day.

A few days ago, I heard the noise again and I managed to capture audibly once the intriguing sound. It appears to be linked to another obvious bird noise, an unpleasant bird screech (coming from an owl? A bat?). The pattern seemed to approximate to eight or so instances of the solo screech, one instance of the intriguing low-pitched sound in synch with another screech, and repeat.

Can you positively identify the nature of the two sounds?
Is it possible the two noises are generated by one bird?

Thanks!

Going to Montreal next weekend (June 6-8) for pure recreation. I'm looking for great restaurant recommendations, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also: I know now (given the difficulty of booking a hotel room) that it's the Grand Prix weekend. I've heard that it can be difficult but not impossible to go to some events associated with this. Is there a particular event I shouldn't miss?
BTW, this isn't a romantic getaway, it's a reconnect-with-an-old-friend weekend. If that makes any difference.

What are the best things to do/see in Ottawa and Montreal from June 26th to June 30th (I do realize that I am just missing the amazing Canada Day activities in Ottawa but can't help it). Visiting Montreal for the first time in 6 years. I used to love Jazz Fest, Just for Laughs, Grand Prix, shopping on Rue St. Catherines and Vieux-Port. What should we see? Where should we eat? (we still love smoked meat)

As for Ottawa, what kind of activities go on, if any, before Canada Day.

What's a good, English-friendly tattoo parlour in Montreal, QC? I'm looking to get this fox done on my arm, in Montreal. This will be my first tattoo, and I'd like maybe a list of good parlours that I could check out.
Where is the best Montreal strip club to take women? My gal, and some friends of hers, are working on an art piece set in a strip club. She's never been before and I've never been to any in Montreal. So tomorrow night, myself and a couple of her friends are going to try and have some fun. For research.

Where is the best women-friendly place we should go? We're both pretty open sex-friendly folks, and but would prefer something a little less on the scuzzy side.

(I looked at the old Montreal threads, but there's nothing about women-friendly places)

Good pit stops between NYC and Montreal?

NYC to Montreal- We'll be driving up to Montreal next weekend and are looking for good places to stop. Google Maps tells us to take 87 North...we could take 81 and hit Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, but that adds another hour to our trip. Is it worth it? Is there anything on 87 worth seeing/eating/drinking?

Moving belongings from NYC to Montreal

I am a UK citizen living in New York, planning tro move to Montreal in June. I'll be studying French on a study visa for 1 year whilst my permanent residency application is in process.

I have some personal belongings, furniture and 2 cats in New York which I'm hoping my friend will drive up to me once I find an apartment. I already know I need to fill out duplicate lists of all my property for customs, and the cats need proof of rabies shots.

I have some queries about the logistics of the process for anyone who has done something similar in the past....

1. I don't drive - I think I need to meet him at the border with proof of temporary residence visa - any ideas of how to do this - can I take taxi to the customs office at the border and drive back to Montreal with my friend?

2. Will I get questioned about the amount of stuff I bring, it's not a whole apartment of belongings, but definitely a few large items, chest of drawers, captain's bed, table and chairs, lamps etc.....

Any comments or experiences with his would greatly appreciated!
I've read the "rules" but would love to get some feedback from people who have had experience....

Canadian hotels, eh?

My boyfriend and I are entertaining the idea of a Canadian roadtrip this March but need a place to stay in Montreal and Toronto. We might be able to crash with friends, but if not, I'd like to get an idea of the hotel situation. I assume we want to be in the center of things as much as possible, but neither of us know the cities in question. I'd like to keep it close to $100USD/night if possible. Funky over sterile, but we don't want a hostel, either. Private bath = good. Is this feasible?

Train options from Connecticut/neighboring areas to Montreal?

The S.O. wants to go away for a weekend to Montreal. I'm pretty much sold on the idea except for one glaring issue - how are we getting there? Point of origin would preferably be in Connecticut. Her car isn't reliable enough to drive from where she lives {Middletown, CT} and we're fairly budget-conscious, as people in their early twenties sometimes are. I did a little bit of poking around online and I'm thoroughly flustered and confused by Amtrak and Greyhound. Before I call both of them, I thought I'd ask you ever-helpful folks. Some specifics:

1. She'd like to depart from Connecticut but I can't find anything.

2. There was also the idea to drive somewhere {she suggested Vermont} closer and take the train from there. I've looked into Vermont and though she insists there's a way, I can't seem to find anything that suggests a direct train to Montreal exists. Is there any neighboring area to Connecticut that has effective service to Montreal?

3. We're not trying to spend a whole lot of money...or entire days on the train.

Is this even plausible? I'm getting dejected. Does anyone have personal experiences? Suggestions? Promising things they've seen scrawled in public bathroom stalls? Also, I've already trawled askMeFi, but if there's one thing looking for these train schedules has taught me, it's that I'm not so great at finding stuff. Sorry in advance if there is a related thread that is relevant and recent.

And just in case this does work out, any of you MF-ers have personal favorite activities/pretty places/good eats in Montreal? I definitely found a couple threads on that stuff, but I wouldn't mind reading extra/new opinions.

Thank you thank you thank you hive mind.

Where to buy a straight razor in Montreal?

Where to buy a straight razor in Montreal?

I'll admit that I haven't looked to hard on my own to find the answer for this but I was wondering if any Montreal-ers know of a good place to buy blades for a straight razor? They're for my wife who is a trained hair dresser and cuts a few peoples hair in our home (she vastly prefers razor with guard over scissors); her supply is getting dull. Thanks!

Canadian nurses in Engalnd? Anglophone nurses in Montreal?

How easy is it for a Canadian nurse to work in England? And how easy would it be for an anglophone nurse from Ontario to find work in Montreal? My girlfriend is a registered nurse in Toronto, having obtained her degree at U of Toronto (quite respectable). I am finishing my PhD and considering relocating to London, UK, or Montreal, Quebec, because these are the places where I have received postdoc offers from.

The questions that naturally come to mind are:

1) Do registered nurses from Canada, with a Canadian degree and Canadian experience, need additional training/accreditation in the UK? Or is the transition relatively seamless?

2) I know there are a number of English language hospitals in Montreal, most if not all associated with McGill. Are the nurses that work in these hospitals required to speak French as well? (We are both interested in learning French, of course, but it would be some time before we would be fluent enough)

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

(We are doing our own research, but additional help is always good)

(As for being Canadian and not speaking French ... we are new Canadians)
