Hi, my SO and I are taking the train from NYC to Quebec City and/or Montreal between Christmas and New Year's. I have never been to Montreal or QC or taken such a long train ride, and I would welcome general tips and suggestions about the trip. We will not be renting a car, but we are savvy transit-users and walkers. More questions inside: [more inside]
I'm a woman in my early 40s with no real marketable skills that make me stand out in job hunting. I currently have a job in Montreal, but I'm originally from Toronto and for various reasons, I'm planning on moving back. I'd like to learn some skill(s) in the next 6 months or so (planning on moving July 1) that will hopefully make a significant increase in the likelihood that I can find a job quickly once there. My girlfriend and I have an anniversary coming up and are looking for a nice, new to us, quiet place to have dinner. [more inside]
My hubby and I will be in Montreal from this Thursday night until Saturday night. Are there are any events going on that we should check out? First time in the city for both of us. [more inside]
I occasionally like to go out and have a drink or two, read and people watch. What's a good place for me to try in downtown Montreal where I won't have to deal with hassles from being a woman alone in a bar? Bonus: anglo friendly and near Berri.
I have 3 weeks of free time before school starts and want to make the most of it. [more inside]
What stylish but versatile mix and match clothing articles and accessories should I pack for three July nights in Montreal and four nights in a cabin off Lake Beverly in Ontario? How do I keep them looking "fresh" despite heat, humidity, and my own unforgiving sweat? [more inside]
My boyfriend and I will be in Montreal for a long weekend June 25 through June 28, and we're looking for non-pretentious, mixed-crowd bars and clubs with good electronic music or hip hop. This should be easy, no? [more inside]
The apartment is otherwise perfect in mostly every way. Is this kind of thing a reason not to take it? [more inside]
I will be in Montreal from July 5 to July 11. Anything cool happening? [more inside]
Trying to decide whether to go to Montreal for our long weekend trip. Did you have a good trip there? Do you have long walks or other things to recommend? [more inside]
I currently work in NYC for a large multinational financial services company. I'm in a contract position here, which is due to be renewed in August (which possibly might not be). They've internally offered me a full-time position in Montreal, and I don't know if I should take the offer (which is flat on salary. 110k/yr). I can probably find a similar position in NYC, but it'd be a contract position, and I really like the culture of the company I work for and I guess I'd rather have the job security of a full time position right now... huge snowflake inside. I'm thinking of visiting Montreal for a couple months this summer as a "test run" of sorts before possibly relocating there permanently next year. How realistic is the prospect of finding a sublet in Montreal for June-July, and where would one look for such a thing online? [more inside]

My in-laws are flying in from India to Boston. They've never been to Canada and are curious to see the Eastern part including Toronto, Ottawa, Quebuc, Montreal. Do you have any recommendations on guiding tour companies which they may enjoy. (Please note, they aren't open to renting a car, so I'm researching guided tour options). Thanks in advance, -Z
MITTENFILTER: I'm buying some mittens (requested) for a friend's kid, a 5 year old boy who is extremely enthusiastic about transportation vehicles of all kinds (though especially those related to space exploration). They live in snowbound articky Montreal (I live in sunny Southern California). The mittens should be very warm and of the variety which have long arm gaiters so they can be sealed up with the kid's winter coat's sleeves. What mittens would you recommend? Are there cool kid novelty ones, perhaps in the shape of transportation vehicles of all kinds or something similar? are there astronaut mittens for kids even? Thanks for all your tips!

We are planning to drive to Chicago for the holidays, and we thought it might be fun to go through Canada on the " getting there" leg of the trip. We will have two dogs with us, so the sightseeing and lodging would have to include them. [more inside]
I am trying to visit a friend in Westfield, Vermont, which is up near the border, and then another friend in Montreal, but I'm having a hard time figuring out the logistics. [more inside]

I will be in Montreal during the World Film Festival and would love to catch at least one film during it (subtitled in English), however there are 400 something films to choose from, and thus it's extremely difficult to narrow it down. Does anyone know of anything exceptional that will be there, or perhaps an amazing director's next film that shouldn't be missed? [more inside]
My husband and I will be attending the same business conference for a week in Montreal. We will be leaving our toddler at home with family for the first time, so this is the first time in almost three years we are alone together without having to watch our child or rush back to a babysitter. What should we do while we're in Montreal? [more inside]
I am trying to identify a wild plant at the edge of my property. I live in Montreal. The plant is growing under the canopy of a large maple, and it is growing as a thick colony. The plant resembles honewort (AKA wild chervil – Cryptotaenia canadensis), but it does not have a taproot. Instead, it has rather thin, shallow, spreading roots that seem to give rise to new plants. Each plant consists of three or four smooth stems. At the top of each stem is a leaf divided into three leaflets. Cross-sectionally, the stems are triangular. The leaves and stems smell somewhat like parsley or celery when crushed. Although this colony has been on my property for many years, I have never noticed any flowers, which suggests that they are small and inconspicuous. The plants are presently 30 to 35 cm tall. Please see attached photos. Thanks for your help.
I really want to watch Eurovision on Saturday! Ideally, I'd like to do it in a divey bar, possibly a divey gay bar. Is it possible to live my dream in Montreal? [more inside]

I live in New York City and am visiting Montreal and I'm looking for Chinese translated manga / manhua. Tian Hua in Montreal used to have some, but maybe they got rid of them when they moved? Is there another place that stocks them in either city? Bonus points if you know any good sources for Chinese children's books in either city.
I'm planning a 10-day vacation with my girlfriend in Montreal in July, with a couple of days at the end in Quebec City. I bought all the guidebooks, but maybe the hive mind has a better idea which neighborhoods are good as a home base in Montreal for exploring. [more inside]
Agh! I've just come back from Montreal and I've already forgotten the name of this Asian soup that is everywhere. It seems to be at Thai restaurants as well I think as (other) Asian places and I wanted to look it up and see what's in it because I didn't get a chance to try it. I remember it had "aise" as the last bit (I know that's not THAT helpful) and was, as I said, just everywhere, at least in the theatre district and Chinatown. I think it may be Tom Yum or something of that ilk. It looked somewhat related. I think it had noodles. Can someone help? I'm sure this is a very easy question if you're actually in Montreal. Thanks!
We're going to be in Montreal on Canada Day. What will be open and what's closed? Are there any events that occur every year on Canada Day there, and if so are tourists welcomed there? [more inside]
Early May revelry-filled weekend excursion from NYC to Montreal for a group of roughly 12 20-somethings. We see time advantages to flying (provided all goes smoothly) but cost disadvantages. We see cost advantages to driving ourselves, but would like to minimize our personal stress and maximize fun. We see personal stress and maximum fun advantages to being driven, but have no experience with long-distance transporation charter and are unclear on whether this would be cheaper than flying. Any suggestions / experiences?
