We need occasional evening babysitting in Montreal for our two daughters aged 2 and 6. In the past, I have always found babysitters through recommendations of family and friends, but we know almost no one in the city and so don't have a good network to draw on. [more inside]
For pretty terrible (and irrelevant) reasons, I haven't filed my taxes in (I think) 5 years. Now I really really need to do them, but I don't know how to start and I get panicky just thinking about the insurmountable piles of paperwork, potential money owing, and even criminal charges. I'm in QC, Canada. If anyone else has dealt with late filing or voluntary disclosure in Quebec, please help! [more inside]
We are planning a vacation in September of this year and noticed that the Canadian dollar is forecasted to drop as low as ~.55 USD. What is the best way to capitalize on the exchange rate favorably (as US citizens) and how long should we wait/watch the rates to get reservations? [more inside]
Today, a guy called up my elderly mother, pretending to be me, with a far-fetched story about 'me' traveling in a car that was speeding, and yada yada yada, the police needed $2,000 wired to them so that this incident wouldn't go on my 'permanent record'. The phone number the 'policeman' gave was a 514 area code (Montreal). My mother used Western Union to wire the scammers the money. She lives in New York City. Yes, I've told her not to give any information over the phone, and yes, the con story is nonsensical in several ways, not least of which is her incorrectly recognizing her son's voice-My question is, do we have any chance of identifying and prosecuting these guys? The victim is in NYC, the perps were impersonating me and a (corrupt) San Francisco policeman, and they were using a Montreal phone number, which may also have been stolen/spoofed. Any insight appreciated. Be careful out there!

I have a 2007 Mazda 3 with battery problems. I'm looking for: 1. Any thoughts as to what the underlying issue might be (and how expensive it should be to diagnose/fix); and, 2. Recommendations for anglo mechanics in Montreal (specifically Verdun, ideally). [more inside]
I need some help with a few harmful behaviours I have (I should really cut down or eliminate my use of some problem substances). None of the behaviours are wreaking havoc in my life, but I need a touchup to get them under control. I'd like to look into CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) to see if it can help, as traditional psycho-dynamic psychotherapy didn't help that issue. [more inside]
I am planning a road trip from NJ to Mackinac Island, Michigan the first weekend of August. We are thinking about taking the long way home and stopping off in Montreal. Here's the catch. I know nothing about Quebec or Montreal. Hope me? [more inside]

We are trying to plan a no-stress vacation for two - our last as a couple before we have a baby! The plan is to go somewhere easy and hot, easily-ish accessible from Montreal, to lie on the beach and not think about too many stressful details, for about a week. I'm going to be 6 months pregnant, so we are trying to avoid places that are likely to give me food poisoning (yes we know the risks are everywhere.) What's your best place/hotel/resort/beach suggestion with direct flights to Montreal? [more inside]
I'm heading to Montreal on business in a couple of weeks, and am always keen to try good local beers. Les Soeurs Grises on Rue McGill is just down the street from the hotel, but I'd love to hear of any other recommendations in or around the city center...
I'm looking for a gym in montreal where I can hit things. I did karate for many years, did circuit kickboxing after that. I've been inactive for months and find I mostly miss hitting things. What are good places to do that? [more inside]
Hi, my SO and I are taking the train from NYC to Quebec City and/or Montreal between Christmas and New Year's. I have never been to Montreal or QC or taken such a long train ride, and I would welcome general tips and suggestions about the trip. We will not be renting a car, but we are savvy transit-users and walkers. More questions inside: [more inside]
I'm a woman in my early 40s with no real marketable skills that make me stand out in job hunting. I currently have a job in Montreal, but I'm originally from Toronto and for various reasons, I'm planning on moving back. I'd like to learn some skill(s) in the next 6 months or so (planning on moving July 1) that will hopefully make a significant increase in the likelihood that I can find a job quickly once there. I occasionally like to go out and have a drink or two, read and people watch. What's a good place for me to try in downtown Montreal where I won't have to deal with hassles from being a woman alone in a bar? Bonus: anglo friendly and near Berri.
I have 3 weeks of free time before school starts and want to make the most of it. [more inside]
What stylish but versatile mix and match clothing articles and accessories should I pack for three July nights in Montreal and four nights in a cabin off Lake Beverly in Ontario? How do I keep them looking "fresh" despite heat, humidity, and my own unforgiving sweat? [more inside]

My in-laws are flying in from India to Boston. They've never been to Canada and are curious to see the Eastern part including Toronto, Ottawa, Quebuc, Montreal. Do you have any recommendations on guiding tour companies which they may enjoy. (Please note, they aren't open to renting a car, so I'm researching guided tour options). Thanks in advance, -Z
MITTENFILTER: I'm buying some mittens (requested) for a friend's kid, a 5 year old boy who is extremely enthusiastic about transportation vehicles of all kinds (though especially those related to space exploration). They live in snowbound articky Montreal (I live in sunny Southern California). The mittens should be very warm and of the variety which have long arm gaiters so they can be sealed up with the kid's winter coat's sleeves. What mittens would you recommend? Are there cool kid novelty ones, perhaps in the shape of transportation vehicles of all kinds or something similar? are there astronaut mittens for kids even? Thanks for all your tips!

I will be in Montreal during the World Film Festival and would love to catch at least one film during it (subtitled in English), however there are 400 something films to choose from, and thus it's extremely difficult to narrow it down. Does anyone know of anything exceptional that will be there, or perhaps an amazing director's next film that shouldn't be missed? [more inside]
My husband and I will be attending the same business conference for a week in Montreal. We will be leaving our toddler at home with family for the first time, so this is the first time in almost three years we are alone together without having to watch our child or rush back to a babysitter. What should we do while we're in Montreal? [more inside]
I am trying to identify a wild plant at the edge of my property. I live in Montreal. The plant is growing under the canopy of a large maple, and it is growing as a thick colony. The plant resembles honewort (AKA wild chervil – Cryptotaenia canadensis), but it does not have a taproot. Instead, it has rather thin, shallow, spreading roots that seem to give rise to new plants. Each plant consists of three or four smooth stems. At the top of each stem is a leaf divided into three leaflets. Cross-sectionally, the stems are triangular. The leaves and stems smell somewhat like parsley or celery when crushed. Although this colony has been on my property for many years, I have never noticed any flowers, which suggests that they are small and inconspicuous. The plants are presently 30 to 35 cm tall. Please see attached photos. Thanks for your help.
I really want to watch Eurovision on Saturday! Ideally, I'd like to do it in a divey bar, possibly a divey gay bar. Is it possible to live my dream in Montreal? [more inside]

I live in New York City and am visiting Montreal and I'm looking for Chinese translated manga / manhua. Tian Hua in Montreal used to have some, but maybe they got rid of them when they moved? Is there another place that stocks them in either city? Bonus points if you know any good sources for Chinese children's books in either city.
I'm planning a 10-day vacation with my girlfriend in Montreal in July, with a couple of days at the end in Quebec City. I bought all the guidebooks, but maybe the hive mind has a better idea which neighborhoods are good as a home base in Montreal for exploring. [more inside]
Agh! I've just come back from Montreal and I've already forgotten the name of this Asian soup that is everywhere. It seems to be at Thai restaurants as well I think as (other) Asian places and I wanted to look it up and see what's in it because I didn't get a chance to try it. I remember it had "aise" as the last bit (I know that's not THAT helpful) and was, as I said, just everywhere, at least in the theatre district and Chinatown. I think it may be Tom Yum or something of that ilk. It looked somewhat related. I think it had noodles. Can someone help? I'm sure this is a very easy question if you're actually in Montreal. Thanks!
We're going to be in Montreal on Canada Day. What will be open and what's closed? Are there any events that occur every year on Canada Day there, and if so are tourists welcomed there? [more inside]
Early May revelry-filled weekend excursion from NYC to Montreal for a group of roughly 12 20-somethings. We see time advantages to flying (provided all goes smoothly) but cost disadvantages. We see cost advantages to driving ourselves, but would like to minimize our personal stress and maximize fun. We see personal stress and maximum fun advantages to being driven, but have no experience with long-distance transporation charter and are unclear on whether this would be cheaper than flying. Any suggestions / experiences?
