Seeking a short term apartment in Central Vermont

Seeking an apartment in the Barre / Montpelier, Vermont area. Where to look? I'm moving to Topsham,VT with my boyfriend in the spring, but we're looking to escape our current place in NYC a bit sooner than that (Jan. 1 would be ideal) to save money on rent.

Does anyone know of any apartment rentals that would be willing to do a short lease for 4-5 months at around $600/mo? We don't need anything fancy and the only pet we have is a cat. We could even pay for the whole thing in advance.

Alternately, where (besides Craigslist) should we be looking?

I'm Younger Than That Now

Lawyer Alert! -- Say my beloved son is 22 yrs old and living in Montpelier, Vermont. Suppose that Montpelier has more lawyers per capita than any other state capital (which it does, because it is the smallest of them all). What service could this bright, good looking young man offer to all those lawyers in order to support himself while he gets ready to earn his college degree? In a recent Gmail chat I told my son: "So...you dress up -- khakis and a shirt with a collar. You assume your "I'm a bright kid" voice, and you go around to all the lawyer's offices in town and ask for a job -- anything to start. They'll like your looks and your incentive to ask. They'll give you a job to start, running errands and making copies, maybe. You can learn the law trade. Seriously. This can work. You just go to all the law offices in town. If one has nothing, ask if they know someone who does. Act like a go-getter (which you are, though you won't admit it). Really. This is where the good jobs are in that town. Or in the statehouse. Take advantage of it."

Do any of you have some advice for him along these lines?

Any tips for studying abroad in France

As a college sophomore, I plan on studying abroad in France for a full scholastic year in the fall. To anyone else who has been in Europe for an extended period of time: I am trying to pack light, but what sort of things would you consider bringing that are either necessities or very helpful? Also, any other tips on getting along with the French, or helpful hints about Europe in general? I am going to be staying in the southern part of France, in Montpelier. I am considering bringing a laptop so I can watch my DVDs, upload pictures, etc., but I won't have internet access on a regular basis so I am debating the risk that it gets lost/stolen/destroyed. What kind of clothing would go best? Any help on social faux pas (ha) with the French?
I would also appreciate any help I could get with regards to airfare, which is currently very high. And the electric outlet converter, could you plug a US power strip into it and use that? Or would that overload the outlet?

Thanks so much!

Where to stop between Boston and Montreal?

We're going to be driving from Boston to Montreal. We'll want to stop half-way there and half-way back (likely on a Sunday in both cases). Where might be a good place to stop, stretch our legs, get a bite to eat that's not kid-unfriendly. Sites, bites, etc. all welcome, especially interesting ones. I'm guessing that Montpelier is about half-way, but we're generally open.
