Ancient Roman and Greek civilizations set my imagination ablaze, and while I've loved Homer's works right now I'm interested in works written in, say, the last century that take place in those times, or thereabouts. [more inside]

I would like to start learning how to draw, after 16 years of stick figures. I am keeping a sketchbook to practice in frequently, but I was wondering if anyone had some good resources for jump-starting my artistic development (there are overwhelmingly many such resources on the Internet). I am also interested in general modern art, metal art, sculpting, lithography, and photography. Thanks in advance! ^_^

Wife watches "Big Brother" occasionally, has fallen in love with the wallpaper seen in this season's episodes (image
). It's got a mid-century modern vibe and is super-retro-awesome. Where oh where can we find wallpaper just like this (or similar) - any ideas? Much obliged for any help!

I was in a shop today and heard a snippet of "It's Only A Paper Moon" played with what sounded like a synth beat. Unfortunately the clerks weren't able to help me figure out the artist and sorting through the 813 versions of the song on iTunes has proven slow work.
Does anyone know of a track like this? I may be off in my description a bit, but it definitely wasn't your standard jazz cover.

Twenty years ago I came across an album of twentieth century music and I'm pretty sure it was from some music festival - the Osaka or Ojai festival? - featuring 20th-century orchestral composers. And this particular track featured musical glasses and had "Mountain" in the title.

Where should I stay in Amsterdam and what should I check out?
I'm going to Amsterdam for two days and two nights the first week of January. I am a 26 year old single lesbian who is very interested in checking out the local hotspots for gay women and also visiting some art galleries. I would like to see some unusual art installations and/or performance art while I am there. Thank you! : ) [more inside]

Any ideas where I can get a replica Eames Desk Unit
for less than $1399? I've had good luck with finding replica mid-century modern furniture, as it just begs to be reproduced (molded plastics, simple materials). For some reason desks are several times harder to come by.

Can you help me find this surreal novel? Years ago, I saw an excerpt from it. All I remember is a scene where there was a worm in a cage, and its droppings would fall onto some kind of musical instrument, creating strange music. I think this story was written in Eastern Europe, in the beginning of the 20th century. Thanks!

Where can I find original, modern yet classy announcements for my daughter's impending graduation from high school?
My daughter graduates this June and I have been looking at the plethora of unimaginative announcements out there. I tried Etsy with no luck.
I want something cute, modern, maybe the possibility of personalizing it with a photo but not tacky or cookie-cutter. I want nice paper and good design. Any suggestions?
