Could I have messed up my cellphone's reception when I replaced its casing? I recently replaced the casing on my phone: taking my phone apart, unscrewing lots of things, then putting the phone into a new case. I just followed online instructions; I don't have a lot of experience with these sorts of things. I can't remember when it started, but my phone seems to say "Emergency Calls Only" or "No Carrier" quite regularly now, and I never noticed it doing this in the past. Is there something I can do to fix it? [more inside]

I've noticed that mobile phones have a much easier time talking to each other than to most laptops/PCs. Is there any software out there that can make a PC behave like a mobile phone? For some reason I'm expecting mostly open-source, but anything is welcome.

What's the best wireless phone service for the NYC area? I'm as fed up with Verizon as the next guy, but my limited experience with an iPhone in Manhattan left me with dropped/missed calls and very intermittent access to maps, etc. (unless already cached). Putting aside fun features that usually work, and imagining your life depended on receiving or making a phone call, which network would you choose?* *Please speak from experience with a carrier and nevermind the silly games they play (e.g., crippling bluetooth, etc.); I simply need a service that doesn't miss or drop calls.

I have a siemens C55 telephone that is simlocked. I've also gotten the unlock code off my provider a while back. The problem is I either didn't receive or have lost the unlock instructions, i.e. what exactly I need to type into the phone along with the unlock code, and whether this should be with the original sim card, a new sim card or no sim card at all loaded. I know I can unlock it without the code if I have a data cable, but I don't have a data cable and they'd probably cost more than the entire phone is worth. Googling is made difficult by the millions of sites offering to unlock phones for low low prices.

I'm looking to upgrade my mobile phone, and I don't want to be limited to my provider's (T-Mobile's) choices. I have specific needs for the phone, in extended. I'd like to know if anyone knows of a phone that fits these requirements, or, better yet (and more useful to others), what are some good ways to track down a particular model that fits my specific needs? I'm sure somebody else who's travelling over Thanksgiving could also benefit from this knowledge. I brought my cell phone with me on my five-day trip to my parents' place, but of course I forgot the charger. The question I ask is: 'tis nobler to leave the phone on continuously and hope the battery pulls through, or is it a better idea to turn the phone off every night and turn it on only at the point in the day when I plan to use it? Does powering off and on drain more battery power than idling / the cell phone equivalent of "sleep"? FWIW, I have a relatively new Nokia 6682, and the battery is currently showing a full charge but I suspect it's lying, as I think it's been at least 24 hours since I charged it (that said, this battery's done five days unplugged before).
