I guess I know too many Saras and Sarahs, Teresas and Theresas, etc., because I find myself having a hard time remembering who spells their name which way. I know that people can become annoyed when their name is spelled incorrectly, so I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions for how to remember the correct spelling when someone has a common name with multiple possible spellings, without having to consult an address book every time I want to write or type their names. Thanks.

Was relating a couple mnemonics to a friend, words or common abbreviations that are spelled by using the first letters of a group of things. Those that came to mind: HOMES for the Great Lakes, A PAIL for types of wounds and ETC for people who attend religious services on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Possibly shoddy Google-fu leaves me unable to find more (not the ROY G BIV variety), but here's hoping the Hive Mind can share some.

Today, my economics professor mentioned that he always had trouble spelling "tariff" (deciding if it had two "r"s or two "f"s) until one of his students taught him a mnemonic device so dirty, he refused to share it with our class. Any ideas?

I could use your help hive mind. I'm currently taking an accounting course in college, and I'm having difficulties with financial statements and what gets reported where. I'm looking a mnemonic system that can embed this into my brain, as well as tricks and formulas which can help simplify this for me. [more inside]

A conversation w/ a friend has left me curious about adults and mnemonic devices. What mnemonics, perhaps learned or created as a student, do AskMefi-ites still 'consult'?
