How do I find a career mentor in the archives/preservation field?

I've had difficulty finding a career mentor in the archives/preservation field because of a lack of local resources and the fact that I obtained my Masters degree online, which was rather 'alienating' and didn't really allow for the kind of student-professor relationship that blooms into recommendation letters and networking. Are there ways of seeking out (real, committed) mentors either online, or in my area (northern Virginia/Washington DC), preferably involving me providing volunteer work? [more inside]

How to Manage a Job Interviewer Whose Knowledge is Outdated & Unfocused

I am presently going through interviews for an IT consulting position with a nationally known firm. I've been through two extended phone interviews. librarian angst talking blues

I'm on the edge of starting an online MLIS degree. I know that the conventional wisdom is that this is a bad idea, but I don't feel like I have any other options. Am I about to make a serious mistake, or could I be an exception? Were all of the dire warnings about becoming a librarian due, in part, to general economic malaise, or is the profession in trouble? Joint MLS/MA Programs

A friend of mine is interested in joint ML(I)S/MA programs. He's flexible in terms of the MA field, but is particularly interested in postcolonial/subaltern studies, area studies, religious studies, gender/queer studies, that kind of thing. Which programs should he consider?

Half-way between calm analysis and outright panic mode

I'll be graduating with my Master of Library Science in the spring of 2012. My focus has been with diverse populations and technology training. I want to work in a public library when I graduate, but I'm a little daunted by the public sector job market (and just the general job market). What should I be doing to increase my chances for employment as much as possible, and what can I do to make possible unemployed job searching as painless as possible. [more inside]

How can I use my MLIS and my language skills?

What are potential career options for an MLIS graduate interested in using language and translation skills on the job as well? I am a 21-year-old undergraduate student who will be graduating one quarter early in March 2011. This summer I'm applying to the UW's iSchool MLIS program and hope to start Autumn Quarter 2011. I am very interested in traditional library work, but in the last couple years I have worked hard to learn Spanish. I'm currently training to be a Spanish-English translator and interpreter as well, as this will help pay for my MLIS degree. I would really love a career that could incorporate my growing interests in linguistics and translation, as well as my interests in the research and service-oriented aspects of librarianship. Any suggestions? I know the State Department has some positions that would incorporate all these skills, and I'm looking for other options, too.

What are the telecommuting options for an mlis?

I'm about half way through an mlis degree. (Both the mlis and my bachelor's are from well-respected schools.) I'm wondering what options are available for telecommuting for those with a library and information science degree? (I'll be living in a fairly remote location which will necessitate alternative employment!) My writing skills are strong. Grant writing? Cataloging? Is "information broker" actually a viable option? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Academic Librarian market

I am interested in academic librarianship. I am currently finishing my first year in an MLIS program. I already have my Master's Degree in computer science and am currently working as a computer programmer in an academic library in Southern California. I'm curious as to what the job market is like out there for academic librarians now. I know that many universities have experienced dramatic budget cuts recently and several (including ours) have instituted hiring freezes. I won't be graduating for another year or more but I'm curious as to what the climate is like out there now. Are there many openings? Also, given my programming background, what areas do you think it's best for me to focus on in my studies? What is going to make me hireable and look good on a resume?

MLIS vs MIS

I am on my way to getting a MLIS degree, but since I am more interested in the tech side of things, I was thinking of switching to my school's MIS graduate program. Advantages, disadvantages? Are MIS degrees worth anything anymore, or is the tech job market still so bad that I would be better off sticking to a MLIS?

What scripting languages and/or CMSes are most important to learn in a library environment?

Library/information science question(s): My code-fearful friend succeeded in getting through library school without exposure to more than basic HTML. I now have him on a diet of Dreamweaver and XHTML, with a sprinkling of GoLive. He's wondering about next steps: for someone who wants to be well-equipped to work in an academic, medical, legal, or similar library or archive (with web development as part of his job, rather than the focus of it), what scripting language(s) and/or content-management systems are most important to learn? Is the library world fragmented in this regard, or is there a dominant technology? What would be a logical entry vector into this world for someone without a comp-sci bone in his body (in terms of languages/systems, and specific learning resources)?[no more inside]
