Is there a Muxtape analog yet? I've seen Mixtape.me but the song selection is constraining me. I know Muxtape died from RIAA troubles so I suppose I'm not hoping for a pretty application with which to upload mp3s (though that would be preferable) but is there anything else out there? Is there a Mixtape.me with a better selection? Should I just .zip my mp3s together and email my mix like a loser?

"Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles, "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies, "Here Comes My Baby" by Cat Stevens. Besides the name, these songs have some similar musical qualities. Any other songs fit (even if the name doesn't)? Other songs I think that fit: "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake, "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell, and "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" by Paul Simon (can't find a good recording). I want a theoretical mix tape of songs that feel like these ones.

Singers who listen to other songs?

I'm looking for songs in which the singer specifically references listening to another musician, song or album. Please help? I don't want songs about singers or songs about songs and I don't even want songs that reference seeing other musicians in concert or on stage.
Three examples:
* "Thrift Store Chair" by Everclear has the line "Gonna put a John Prine record on"
* "Runnin' Down a Dream" by Tom Petty has the line "me and Del were singin' Little Runaway" which works because he is in the car listening to the radio, not in a studio singing along with Del Shannon in person.
* "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies works only because of the line "Just listenin' and re-listenin' to Smiley Smile" not because it mentions Brian Wilson.

I'm not looking for songs that simply mention other musicians or songs. There has to be active listening involved.

I know the examples I gave are very middle-of-the-road artists, but I'm interested in anything you can think of from any genre that fits the bill.

Yesterday evening I was watching Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and it made me wonder if the concept of song compilations for the purpose of conveying one's feelings for another is still relevant. If so, at what stage of a relationship is it appropriate to present the recipient with said mix?

Please help me put a mixCD together for a friend who was recently dumped by her boyfriend. A friend of mine has given me the task of putting together a bunch of songs that will match her current mood. She was dumped a few days ago by her boyfriend.

The problem that I have is that there wasn't a problem with their relationship, or it's ending. They got on really well, but both of them realised that it was time to call it a day. They were happy together, and now they're happy apart. She's looking for songs that celebrate the positive ending of a positive relationship.

I Will Survive, by Gloria Gaynor: No.
Thank You, by Jamelia: No.
Etc.

Any song suggestions? I'm completely out of ideas. Every song I think of is either lamenting the end of the relationship (which she isn't) or if the singer is glad the relationship is over, the relationship was a bad one (which theirs wasn't). Any songs that you can think fit the bill will be very welcomed. I'm not ruling out any genre or age of song.

Help me identify a song that was on a tape in an Italian restaurant. We were eating a leisurely meal in an Italian Restaurant in NYC (Nino's 208). A mixtape was playing throughout, kind of an Italian restaurant greatest hits tape. One song caught my ear. it was a male tenorish pop singer. Strings in the background. It started with the words "Hey now, hey now and then a chorusy thing. I don't remember any of the other words. The song is not Hey now, hey now by Augustana. Please help.

Mixtape filter! Help me put together the best mix tape for my nieces, 11 & 8. Looking for quirky, poppy, dancy, tunes. Avoiding overt love songs unless totally awesome.

Last years mix tape successes were Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, D.A.N.C.E by Justice, Neighborhood by Arcade Fire, and Magnetic Field's "Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits" (which probably should not have been on there, but I liked too much not to include).

I'm looking at Of Montreal and Midnight Juggernauts right now. I can do better. Hope me.

Is there a website that lets you search for songs by emotion? i.e. I want to find songs in [genre] that relate to [emotion]. Googling hasn't turned up anything good, not even mixtape communities or anything like that. Do you know of any mixtape communities that let you search by keyword, or databases that categorize by emotion?

I am specifically looking for songs relating to guilt, of the rock/indie/punk/etc ilk.

Help me make a mixtape of female fronted queer punk? I'm making a mixtape of female fronted queer punk and I need some suggestions of bands or songs. Female fronted is most important. Punk is a very wide spectrum so whatever you think it is, it is (so far my list goes as wide as The Gossip to Homomilitia). The queer part can be loose as well, songs about (against) homophobia, bands with out/loud/proud members who aren't necessarily on vocals, etc.

Extra points for Seattle/NW bands or international hardcore punk.

Extra-super-double points for really, really pissed off vocals.

Once again back is the incredible / the rhyme animal / etc etc etc

Your favourite 'Back' and 'Return' songs. Music fans - hit me! Hi all,

A sibling is returning from a far-off place and I'm driving to the airport to collect. I need to make a badass mixtape full of returning songs.

Provisos:
*It's a sibling - so no romantic 'got you back so let's make love'-type songs.
*Cheese-wise we're talking power cheese or no cheese at all. The compelling stupidity of Backstreet's Back is a good choice. The over-every-college-movie-montage horror of The Boys are Back in Town is less okay. Back in the USSR and Get Back are great. Tangential stuff like Back from Fan Francisco by Magnetic Fields is good too.
* The sibling is not into the metal.
*The sibling will likely by hysterical with jet lag. Subtle cuts from a dubstep mixtape with 'back' in the title will likely go right over heads.

What are some good songs for an Italian / cowboy playlist? We're hosting a "spaghetti western" potluck in a few days, and I wanted to put together a good playlist for the event. This thread had some good suggestions for cowboy music, and I found a little bit of information on spaghetti western soundtracks through google. I would love to find a few songs that sounded both distinctly cowboy and italian.

Bonus points for:
songs that are available through the public domain.
songs that include references to moustaches.
songs that will make people dance.

Here we go again on cross-faded CDs... Is there any software for Windows, currently available, and cheaper than, say, CD-Architect (:-), which will let me make up a playlist for a CD, and then individually adjust the amount of overlap between each pair of source tracks, and do all the mixing and cue-sheet work necessary to give me a CD with one big long track, but the proper Q subcode to make the display and individual track selection work properly? I've looked at the articles in the search, but only a couple of them were looking for this exact thing, and even those weren't written so clearly that you could actually tell... :-)

I'm fairly sure that if you try to do this by using individual tracks, and having something split them from one big mixout at the beginning point in each new song, that you're at the mercy of people's players, and I'd prefer to avoid that.

I don't really wanna spend $mumble on Sony/Vegas, either, though...

I'm looking for some pretty songs about Ohio, or finding a home. My little sister just moved away for her first year of college. I'm worried she's getting homesick, so I'm making her a CD of songs about our home state of Ohio, or being home, or finding a new home. These are ones I listen to while alone in NYC, but I'm hoping to find a few new songs for both me and my sister to enjoy.

My tentative list is:

I'm leaving out: anything about the Kent State shootings, as that's not exactly the theme I'm going for; Randy Newman's "Dayton Ohio 1903," because I'm already pushing the Lame Envelope with Counting Crows; that awful Bowling for Soup song.

The addition of "Red," "Woodcat," and "Naive Melody" will probably invite many more suggestions for general songs about home, as they're easier to think of, but I chose them because they're fairly personal songs, are lovely and well-written, and expand her already tailored list of favorite musicians. Please advise general songs with caution!

Her favorite bands/musicians are mellow, indie stuff: Squarepusher, José González, TNP, Andrew Bird, Beirut, and Iron & Wine.

MixCD for an LDR

What songs should I put on a long distance relationship themed mixed cd? I know, I know. Asking what to put on a mix is like asking what to write in a love letter. But I've been wanting to put together a long-distance relationship themed CD for my SO for a while, and (after searching and searching through my mp3 collection) have only come up with five tracks. They are:

The Beatles - Got to Get You Into My Life
The Hollies - Pay You Back With Interest
The Marvelettes - Please Mr. Postman
Built to Spill - The Weather
The Mountain Goats - Sax Rohmer #1

I've eliminated some options because I've used them on mixes before (Rilo Kiley's My Slumbering Heart, Songs: Ohia's Lioness, various other Beatles songs). It's been a few years and I guess I'm terribly rusty at this. The relationship is established and steady (6 years), which eliminates many "you live far away but we've just met and I think you're cute" songs. As you can see, my tastes run toward 60s rock and indie rock. The internet isn't offering up anything but that "Delilah" song by Plain White T's. So, mefites, any other (better) suggestions?

Vasectomy mixtape! My best friend is about to get his vasectomy. I want to make him a mixtape as a gesture of congratulations, as he and his equally childfree wife are currently in a state of unbridled excitement about finally getting it done. Any clever ideas for songs (especially in the genre of punk)? For example, he often jokes about the Adolescents song "I Hate Children", so I'll probably use that one, among others.

(By the way, I'm posting anonymously because his vasectomy is on the DL and I don't want to let the secret slip to those who might recognize my username and connect us.)

Neue Deutsche Welle song identification

Any Neue Deutsche Welle experts around? I recently came across an old cassette (probably from '82 or '83) with a bunch of Neue Deutsche Welle songs on it. It could be a homemade mix-tape, or it could be a copy of an officially released compilation. I've been able to tentatively identify about half of the songs, but haven't had any luck with the others. Anyone want to take a crack at them? The first side of the tape is posted here, and the second side (with mostly unidentified songs) is posted here. Thanks! note: muxtape seems slightly borked at the moment, so you might need to refresh a couple of times to see all the tracks. Each side should have 8 tracks.

Help me make a play list of music that has to be listened to while watching fireworks. I love fireworks, but I really don't have a good playlist to match that love of said fireworks. I'm not exactly looking for patriotic songs, since there is already an AskMe question about that, this is just looking for awesome fireworks songs. What songs have you listened to while watching fireworks that really did something for you emotionally? Do you know of any songs about fireworks?
