Legality of CD Swap

I'm a high school teacher. The kids want me to be the adviser for a new music club that swaps mix CDs. Is this legal? So the kiddos want to to organize a recurring swap of mix CDs (a la the periodic MeFi CD Swaps) and they want me to be their "club adviser." I think it sounds like a fun idea, but obviously the school can't sponsor (and I can't be a part of) something that's illegal.

Virtually all the kids have digital music, which I will assume came from various legal sources: ripped from CD, iTunes, Amazon, etc. What restrictions could be placed on the the rules of the club (no trading digital music files, only mix CDs, no ripping loaned CDs, etc.) that might make this legal?

And for record I'm in the USA, and you are not a lawyer (or at least not mine). If you have any sources you could link to it would be spiffy, because someone (I'm sure) is going to eventually ask me to back this up.

Fun songs about growing up and graduating?

Fun songs for college graduation mix cd? A good friend is graduating college and I'd like to give her some songs that will help with the coming job search/life changes. Cheesy is ok, but I'd prefer songs that talk about transition, growing up, etc. but are upbeat.

Think: MGMT Time to Pretend

Help me compile a mix of songs about Star Wars!

Help me compile a mix of songs about Star Wars! I'm looking for songs about any of the Star Wars movies or characters for a mix cd. About, not from, so nothing from the soundtracks, please. Examples include Fett's Vette by MC Chris and A New Hope by Blink 182. Any genre accepted.

Additionally, an appropriately awesome title for the mix is needed. Suggestions for songs and title would be greatly appreciated!

Trying to get in the groove

Suggestions for hip hop\rap songs for the gym? I'm getting back into the swing of hitting the gym regularly but my collection of workout songs that get and keep me in the mood is pretty outdated. I don't listen to pop radio and only listen to hip hop/rap at the gym so I know little about what's good.

Here's some examples from my current mix:
Terror Squad - Lean Back
Danger Mouse - Ghetto Pop Life
Bubba Sparxxx - Jimmy Mathis
Eminem - Lose Yourself
Kanye West - Gold Digger
Jay-Z - 99 Problems (Double Black version)

I realize none of these are unearthed gems but it took me a long time to put my current mix together because I'm simply not familiar with the artists. I don't want to invest weeks of my life and hundreds of dollars getting new stuff but having plenty of great workout music is a pretty big deal. I'd prefer specific songs I can preview and then grab on iTunes.

Thanks!

MixCD for an LDR

What songs should I put on a long distance relationship themed mixed cd? I know, I know. Asking what to put on a mix is like asking what to write in a love letter. But I've been wanting to put together a long-distance relationship themed CD for my SO for a while, and (after searching and searching through my mp3 collection) have only come up with five tracks. They are:

The Beatles - Got to Get You Into My Life
The Hollies - Pay You Back With Interest
The Marvelettes - Please Mr. Postman
Built to Spill - The Weather
The Mountain Goats - Sax Rohmer #1

I've eliminated some options because I've used them on mixes before (Rilo Kiley's My Slumbering Heart, Songs: Ohia's Lioness, various other Beatles songs). It's been a few years and I guess I'm terribly rusty at this. The relationship is established and steady (6 years), which eliminates many "you live far away but we've just met and I think you're cute" songs. As you can see, my tastes run toward 60s rock and indie rock. The internet isn't offering up anything but that "Delilah" song by Plain White T's. So, mefites, any other (better) suggestions?

Satin sheets = rich apparently?

Sure I've got money, but what I really want is cock. I would like to make a mix CD of songs with that message. There seems to be quite a few country (and other genres as well) songs about rich women who aren't happy because what they really need is something money can't buy: a deep dickin' (or possibly love, but that is a less fun interpretation). It is most dirtily expressed in Johnny Paycheck's Slide off Your Satin Sheets, which goes "Slide off of your satin sheets, slip into your long soft mink, You know where to find my door, and I know what you're crying for" [spoiler alert: it's cock]. There is also Satin Sheets: "I've found another man, Who can give more than you can, Though you've given me everything money can buy, But your money can't hold me tight, Like he does on a long, long night, You know you didn't keep me satisfied." Finally, there is Little Rock: "Well I'm married to the good life, I said I'd be a good wife, When I put on this ring, I drive a new Mercedes, I play tennis with the ladies, I buy all the finer things, But all that don't mean nothing, When you can't get a good nights loving."

Those are all I can think of with this specific theme. There are lots of other songs about love being more important than money (She Chose the Moon Over Georgia, Better Class of Losers, If You Ain't Lovin' Then You Ain't Livin'), and there may be songs with this message in other genres (Rich Girl, some crap by the Eagles) but I would really like to make a mix CD of country songs with the theme of those three. So, can you think of any other songs with that message? Thanks for your help.

music for girls who hate girls?

She's so dull - come on rip her to shreds! (notterriblynicefilter) Hello.
I'm looking for songs to channel my nightmare-flatmate aggression. What is there about righteous girl-on-girl good straight-forward hatred
- about a particular woman (or non-specified person)

- BY WOMEN

- in and around the genres of punk, (old-fashioned) indie, hiphop and rock

that I can jump around to, so I don't have to jump ON anyone? Not particularly about "you stole my man" but that's good if is more aggresive than Jolene-y.
Other general "ooh I really dont like you too much" tunes, also by blokes, very welcome too!

All i have so far:
Blondie, obviously
Libel - Tilt
Solar Race - Drink my piss
and
John Cooper Clarke - Twat

Cheers!!

What is current mix CD file format etiquette? I'm looking for technical, not musical, advice. Should I be burning MP3s to disk, WAV files, or what? Is it good enough to know that I can play my CD on a mac and on a PC, or should I make sure it can also play on my ancient 1996 boom box? Is there a trick to making sure a CD will actually play on an old boom box, because I have never mastered this? Is there a specific "type" of CD I should look for at the store?

Modern-day mix tape?

In this era of mp3s and mp3 players, what's the equivalent of a mix tape? I like making mix CDs, but everyone I know listens to their music on mp3 players. If I burn a CD for them, then the track order and track data is lost. If I give them a CD of mp3s, the track order is completely lost and they have to reassemble all the songs themselves. How best to recreate the mix tape experience most closely? Preferably in a way that doesn't require me to do something too technical or kludgy? I might add: I'm an iTunes user, as is the bulk of my intended mix CD recipients.

I have read this thread but there doesn't seem to be a real concrete answer. Also, the thread is from two years ago -- perhaps a solution has presented itself since then...?

Must be the season of the witch.

I need help making a Halloween-themed mix CD. Yes, I know all of the usuals... "Monster Mash" and all that... but I'm looking for something a little different.

The recipient of said CD - Mrs. Kaseijin - is quite into music from the 60's, particularly of the French variety, as well as more recent indie pop. She is a big fan, among others, of Serge Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy, Belle & Sebastian, Broadcast, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Clash, Ramones, France Gall...you get the idea.

I've got a few songs, but I'm looking for more - things I perhaps haven't thought of that would be good to fill the CD. Songs don't have to knock you over the head with how Halloweeny they are, they can just be evocative of the time of year. She does not like Oingo Boingo or Thomas Dolby... So far, I have:

Donovan - "Season of the Witch"
Ladytron - "Evil"
Echo & the Bunnymen - "Killing Moon"
Edgar Winter - "Frankenstein"
Serge Gainsbourg - "Cha Cha Cha de Loup" (tentative)
Yo La Tengo - "Autumn Sweater" (tentative)

I'm also planning on adding something by the Zombies and the Mummies, but haven't settled on tracks yet.

Help me put together a ghoulishly good Halloween mix cd! Every year I make a Halloween mix to keep myself in the seasonal mood and pass around to friends. I'm looking for new blood this year. To give you an idea, here are some tracks I'm thinking of using so far:

Ramones - Pet Sematary
Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party
Misfits - Halloween
Los Straitjackets - Munsters Theme
Ministry - Everyday is Halloween
Southern Culture on the Skids - Werewolf
Theme from Halloween
Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Whistlin' Past the Graveyard

So, Mefites, help me broaden my dark horizons. What are some of your favorite spooktacular songs?

I would like to make a mix of "post grunge" modern rock type music. Gin Blossoms, Toad the Wet Sprocket etc. It wasn't this cut and dried, but for simplicity's sake lets say that it happened like this: Nirvana breaks, along with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, etc. Then, six months later, the poseurs swarmed in. I am looking to make a mix with the poseurs. These would be bands of dubious quality that weren't huge, but were mainstays of modern rock radio during those post grunge years. The sissier the better, but they can be a little bit rocking. Examples that I have in mind include The Gin Blossoms, Better than Ezra, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Collective Soul, that song that goes "She don't eat meat, but she sure likes the bone" that kind of thing. Songs that might have been on the soundtrack to a movie starring Ethan Hawk and Winona Rider. Songs that I would have heard driving around in my '86 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra when I was in high school and gone "This sucks" but would have known by heart anyway. Quality is less important than whether or not it was a song that everybody would have heard at that time, but quality is good too. I would prefer song and band name suggestions if at all possible, and I know about Last FM and Pandora. Thanks. Rock on everybody.

Fun roadtrippy songs that mention the states of Louisiana and/or Alabama (or cities therin) prominently? Bonus: showtunes that do so! I'm going on an Easter road trip between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama with a friend and her two children.
Hip Hop Mix CD Filter - What are some positive/inspirational hip hop songs to play in my 7th and 8th grade classroom? Urban Chicago Kids so please nothing "lame". It doesn't necessarily have to be something they've heard before or even something popular. I just want some authentic hip hop with a positive message that I can play in my classroom. Something along the lines of Nas' "I Can" is what I'm looking for in terms of message.

I can edit out vulgarity but it would be easier just to have songs that are "radio edits".

Songs of Silence

Shhh! A mixcd about silence... Looking for songs whose titles or lyrics prominently feature the word(s) "Shhh", "Quiet", "Hush", "Silence", "Whisper" and other similar concepts. May be willing to extend this to "Private" or "Secret" if it works. Pop/Rock/Alt from 50s to 00s, other genres considered.

I've already thought of Bowie's "China Girl", S&G's "Sounds of Silence", "Secret Agent Man" (as a maybe) and "A Kind of Hush" by ???.

What makes a good mix CD, in general terms? Lots of tracks? A few well-selected tracks? Genre-hopping, or themed? Music that might have been on the radio before but that I think is good versus music that hasn't been anywhere but college radio yet? Argl.

When you get a mix CD, what makes you say "this is AWESOME" versus "this sucks"? I'm doing my first MeFiSwap, and I don't want to be that guy. You know, the one whose mix sucks.
I need a list of songs sung about women who stray or contemplate cheating because they are being ignored/not taken care of by the men in their lives. Here's what I've got so far...

"Sick of being lonely" -- Field Mob
"Creep" -- TLC

Songs that feature night...

Songs which feature night? I'm trying to make a mixcd of songs that feature night, to be played at night. I'm particularly interested in songs which have crickets (or other ambient sounds of night) mixed into the recording, so if a song qualifies for this category please mark it with an asterisk or something.

So far:
*Elliott Smith - Twilight
*The Wrens - The House That Guilt Built
*Muse - Hate This & I'll Love You

Shivaree - Goodnight Moon
Lou Reed - Goodnight Ladies

MixCD suggestions similar to 'Desperado' soundtrack.

Mix CD Filter: Looking for some song suggestions, specifically ones that are similar to the Link Wray and Tito & Tarantula tracks from the Desperado soundtrack. 'Strange Face of Love' by Tito & Tarantula, 'Jack the Ripper' by Link Wray, that kind of guitar heavy, Latin/Mariachi/Spanish Guitar influenced rock. Preferably songs in English, as me espanol es muy malo, but that's just a nice to have.

I'm not looking for bands so much as specific tracks that pop into your heads.

I've worn out the poor Desperado soundtrack and want to add some more stuff to make a new mix. I've got a best of compilation of Link Wray's stuff on its way from Half.Com but those Tito & Tarantula discs are way too expensive for CDs.

Any other suggestions from the MeFi hive mind?

Songs about bad boys and the women who love them. Help me make a mix CD. I need songs with a "bonnie & clyde" esque feel. Songs about good girl's devotion to a man who is living, for lack of a better term, the "thug life." And songs where both boy and girl are in love and living a life of crime. and So far I've got:

'97 Bonnie & Clyde (Beyonce and Jay-z)
Picture (Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow)
Help me make an 80's country music mix CD.

Help me make ND¢'s 80's-ish Country-ish Mix Volume II. My SO and I have a dark sordid history involving mix CD's. I make them for her, she says, "I don't like any of these bands. Why didn't you make a CD with songs I like. I don't want this." I then throw the CD out the window while driving down the highway (we have heat).

However, the other day she says, "I really like your 80's-ish Country-ish mix CD, why don't you make another one of those?" I got very excited, because in my ten year history of making mixes for the fairer sex, I have never gotten a request before. The only problem is that the inspiration well has run dry. I got (almost) nothing! That is where you come in.

Here is the track list for ND¢'s 80's-ish Country-ish Mix Volume I, which I made for the Mefi Music Exchange, but which I also put on my SO's ipod:

1. Fishin' in the Dark - The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
2. All the Gold in California - The Gatlin Brothers
3. Feed Jake - Billy Dean
4. Let Me Be There - Olivia Newton John
5. Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses - Kathy Mattea
6. Lay You Down - Conway Twitty
7. Baby I'm Burning - Dolly Parton
8. I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink - Merle Haggard
9. Third Rate Romance - Sammy Kershaw
10. Lonely Women Make Good Lovers - Steve Warner
11. Heavens Just a Sin Away - The Kendalls
12. Silver Wings - Merle Haggard
13. I Believe in Love - Don Williams

The object is really poppy late 70's to early 90's 'country' music. No oldtime, no bluegrass, and no music that is even remotely socially acceptable to listen to: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle. Cheesy, radio-friendly county-pop is the order of the day, with the added requirement that is has to be mind-blowingly great. The only possible track I have so far is "Lesson in Leaving" by Dottie West. I obviously haven't been listening to 94.3 the country legends enough. So, what do ya got Metafilter? My relationship hangs in the balance.

Help me make a mix cd about puzzle pieces. I'm looking for songs like "From Great Heights" by the Postal Service and "Alison's Starting to Happen" by the Lemonheads. I'm looking for songs about two people matching like two corresponding puzzle pieces but any reference to puzzle pieces will work.

Bonus points if the song is very popish and in the vein of Marc Anthony, J Lo, Whitney Houston, etc....

Have any good Valentine's Day mix songs?

[ValentineFilter] Please help me make a great Valentine's Day mix CD. My boyfriend and I have been living in different countries for nearly a year. I want to make him a Valentine's Day mix to remind him of us (and add photos of us for iTunes album art!). Please give me some song titles of songs that have touched you. The music that we like together: 1) indie rock, generally acoustic guitar or piano (ex. The Shins) 2) arena rock - specifically Styx, Journey and REO Speedwagon 3) New Order 4) Stevie Wonder. Thanks for your help! (I had to make this anon so that one day when he's bored and clicks on my MeFi username he doesn't see all this and ruin the magic of the CD.
