We want to throw a party for about 300 people that happens to begin with a wedding ceremony. What are some nontraditional / outside-the-wedding-industrial-complex strategies for creating a meaningful, festive, family-centered, and cost-conscious celebration event for such a large group? We're in St. Louis, Missouri but are very interested in general strategies and examples from other regions that may not be as commonly known here, as well as St. Louis-specific advice. Help! This late in the election cycle, are my (modest) donations best targeted towards individual statewide candidates, or towards general democratic get-out-the-vote efforts? If the latter, any suggestions? I'm specifically interested in impacting Missouri statewide races, which will be highly competitive if enough disgusted GOPers stay home.
I'm planning a week-long road trip for me and my dad for the coming spring. The tentative plan is to drive from St. Louis to the small town of Waverly, TN. That's a trip of only 280 miles if we take the shortest route, and could easily be completed in one afternoon... but that's no fun. The Duffell family likes to take leisurely, meandering road trips. Help us take this thing off the interstate and enjoy the scenery. Don't be afraid to take us out of our way. [more inside]
You can view the equipment here. I took this photo of some old equipment embedded in the bank of Crane Creek in Crane, Missouri. I'm wondering if it might relate to the numerous tomato canning plants that operated there in the 1920s and 30s. It appears to be possibly a conveyor belt (?) They used those in the factories, I know.
No one seems to know when the tributary of the White River now called the James River (in Missouri) was named or who named it. Henry Schoolcraft traveled to the Ozarks in 1818-1819. In a View of the Lead Mines of Missouri (1819) he refers to it as the James River. In the 1820s, it was called the James Fork of the White in references in dealing with the relocated Delaware Reservation on that stream. [more inside]
I have lived in Saint Louis for over 10 years; my wife for 11. Neither of us are natives (so That Question has no bearing on our lives). She is in the running for a job in Independence, MO, and yes, I am gun-jumping here, but I think it's worthwhile to start gathering information about potentially living in KC. [more inside]

It appears as though my wife and I will be driving from Toronto, Canada to San Diego between Christmas and New Year's because that's what life presents you with sometimes. We're on a timetable so we can't stop at every cool thing, but it would be nice to find some scenic spots and local chow that isn't Denny's. Route and other details inside. [more inside]
St. Louis friend trained as a writer and filmmaker wants to use his skills to help people in need/suffering. Does anyone in the area (the city, or St. Louis County) know of any volunteering options for him? He already has an office job, but career suggestions would be welcome, though I think volunteering is more of an immediate interest. National and local organizations anyone knows of in the area are welcome. Thanks!

Mum and I are going on a road trip in a week. We're starting from the Seattle area and the farthest point is Mansfield, MO. There we will see the last "Little House" of Laura Ingalls Wilder. We'll also be visiting DeSmet, SD to see the "Little Town on the Prairie". We're also going to see Mt. Rushmore which is also in South Dakota. Other than that, we have no definite plans. What is there to see and/or do between those two points? Any hotel/motel/B&B recommendations? [more inside]

I'm from out of town (Chicago), but I met a girl here in KC the other day and we've decided to go out tomorrow evening. We're both artsy types with a fondness for adventure and off-the-beaten-path entertainment. I know I could easily defer to her for suggestions, but I'd like to have a few ideas to throw out. I'm up for anything really. It doesn't have to be a proper event or anything- someplace cool to wander around or explore is fine too. Just toss it all out there!! Food suggestions are good too (she's vegetarian). Thanks!!

I normally wouldn't hassle, but it is mint and the price is better than right. Additionally--I've heard rumor about some mysterious trick involving Arkansas--that just may make everything easier.
