I find a good Let's Play to be soothing and engaging. I like Minecraft
best, but am willing to consider other games that have a similar vibe. I am interested in finding good videos that are relatively mature and fun. I would also consider good tutorial series. Currently I have been watching stuff put out by Paul Soares Jr
, and I like it. I have not enjoyed anything by stampylongnose
because it is too frantic and clownish. I have not found my way into Far Lands or Bust
, but am willing to give it a try. Basically I like watching someone go about their business and talk about whatever while they do it. Do you have recommendations? Can you say what you like about your recommended titles?

I'm looking for people who are regularly posting interesting/unusual content about Minecraft. Examples would be unusual Let's Play type series like the Far Lands or Bust series that recently got written up in the New Yorker
. Written content or public servers where more interesting than usual activities are going on also work. [more inside]

We have a Minecraft subscription. My son wants to upgrade to 1.6.4. I downloaded the "new launcher" and pressed "play demo" to install 1.6.4 on our machine.
However, it's just a demo. If we already have a Minecraft subscription, do we have to pay an extra $20 or whatever to upgrade?
Minecraft 1.7 is supposed to come out soon, so would I have to pay again to upgrade again?
But the fundamental question is, do I have to purchase 1.6.4 if I already have a Minecraft subscription?

So the kids want to go as Minecraft characters on Halloween. They've ordered masks so that they can go as Steve, Enderman, and Creeper. (Don't ask me, I don't know either.) If they were going as comic-book characters, I would have some idea what I could dress up as in order to be consistent with them. With respect to the Minecraft universe, I have no idea. Any idea what other costumes would be consistent for me to wear that fit inside the Minecraft context?

I'm thinking about giving my 2009 MacBookPro to my 10 year old for his birthday. The main thing he does on the computer is play Minecraft. Google is being unhelpful, as are the various Minecraft discussion forums I've looked through. So I thought I'd turn to AskMe. [more inside]

I have an interest in purchasing a very large number (500+) of Minecraft licenses for public libraries. I know that bulk purchases of Minecraft Edu are discounted, but we'd much rather use regular Minecraft. I can't find contact information for anyone at Mojang to talk with about this. [more inside]

My kid wants me to install a bunch of mods to minecraft, I'm confused about the process. Installing mods seems much different then say on Steam games where its integrated into the application. I'm uncomfortable just following sketchy links on message boards to download and install jars/executables, but thats the process as I've seen it described. Is there a more obvious way to do this? Mr. BlahLaLa and I are considering buying Kid BlahLaLa a laptop for his 10th birthday. (We want him to be able to play Minecraft and browse the internet.) We're a Mac family but I'm pretty sure this computer will have to be non-Mac because they're so much cheaper, which in turn opens up a whole world of internet security questions that I usually don't think about on my mac. Plus the whole idea of "Now I'm giving my kid a computer, what do I need to think about?" type of stuff. [more inside]

as an option but I wanted to ask y'all if you knew of a better/cheaper way to do things.

I just installed Minecraft on my MacBook Pro, and it is working fine except that at night (in the game) it is pitch black. It is pretty much impossible to see anything but stars and sand.
