My dad paid for 200k worth of schooling for me, i got a BA in Economics from a good school, went on to do some independent film production, quit my job with my boss 6 months ago, finally saw the last film I helped produce premiere at TIFF, and I've been re-evaluating what I want to do with my life. (Currently 24.5 years old.) I want to join the Army and become a Ranger, like my uncle (who my dad despises) but I don't know how to go about telling my dad. [more inside]
I have a serious question about how war will be fought in this future age. Please explain how technology effects the business of military conflict. I'm very very interested if any news outlets or American Politicians are discussing this perspective currently. Details inside. [more inside]

What are some options for a bright young man who wants to delay college? It can be volunteer-based, overseas, career ideas, special programs, alternate ideas of how to approach higher learning...anything. The main thing he wants is real-world experience outside of a classroom, something that will help him grow as a person and help him learn what he wants out of life. [more inside]
So my bright, handsome hs senior son wants to enlist in the Marines. I am wrestling with a few things. He has always wanted to join the military so this was not unexpected. What is unexpected is 1) he always wanted to join the Army 2) he always wanted to do ROTC. Now he has been online with some military forums and he has decided he really wants to be on the ground doing engineering stuff (he’s thinking electrical engineering). He’s met with the recruiter, we’ve met with the recruiter and all sounds good. But I am having a hard time as a mom getting over the change of plan, enlisted vs officer, also the Marines vs any other military branch. I think of Marines as the branch that takes the biggest brunt of foreign involvement - as in really dangerous. [more inside]

My son is in Camp Pendleton in Boot Camp right now for the Marines. I'm thinking I want to buy him some awesome high quality over the ear headphones that sound great and can take a beating(because they will). A warranty would be great. What are some good sounding Marine proof Headphones. These will take lots of Abuse. He's not too picky, but I want something that will last him the next 4 years, and he can use for his music, videos, and Skypeing back home. I'm looking to spend under $200.00, that is my budget..(He graduates Sept 6th, so any advice would be awesome)
I'm moving to Denver... soon! Aside from one awesome week in San Francisco, I've never even been west of the Mississippi. Help this Georgia girl find a place to love. [more inside]
My brother in law is deployed in Afghanistan for the next 7 months or so. He's in a relatively safe post on base. He has access to a commissary, internet, and PS3. While he doesn't really need things, he needs cheering up. What should my husband and I send him? [more inside]
I am dating a special ops military man and am new to this military lifestyle... My father was in the Army so I do know the difficulties and strength it requires to be involving in this lifestyle but there are some things that I want to understand more. Instead of bombarding him with questions and adding to his stress, I thought I could find some answers and support on here from those men that have been in this situation, and the women who have supported these men. I figured out years ago how to change my Jeep's clock to 24-hour/military time. Recently the battery was disconnected and the clock reverted back to regular time, and I cannot figure out how to switch it back to 24-hour time. Does anyone know how to do this? [more inside]
Just over three years ago, I was discharged from the US Air Force during basic (a month in). It was classed as an ELS, but my code was 2c. I've since worked through the issues that caused said separation, but I have absolutely no idea what I should do. I guess my question is, should I appeal my discharge? If so, how would I do that? (the AF Board of Records says to file paperwork with them only when all other avenues have been exhausted) If I were to look at another branch (say, US Army) would I even have to appeal? (Info I found says that you can potentially get a waiver, but I don't know how to approach this with a recruiter, especially now with looming defense cuts.) I'm honestly not sure what I should be doing. Any help is appreciated.
Just wondering if anyone knew of some depictions of women (either TV or film) in uniformed roles that pass the Bechdel test. Bechdel test being where two named women have a conversation about something other than a man. I'm racking my brain but can't think of any.
I am 27 years old, and now considering whether I should join the Air Force on an intelligence track in order to improve my chances of getting a job at State, or just improving my career options in general. Is this a wise decision? [more inside]

In a couple months I have to attend my first ever military ball. I do not know much in the way of social expectations of such an event, I guess I'm just supposed to go and look pretty.. which leads to the real question, What do I wear!!!? . Or how I should dress exactly, what are the "norms"...
There's a character in the 1955 movie "French Cancan" who wears a very fancy uniform. He wears a light blue double-breasted jacket with white braid and bright red pants with stripes on the sides. I think it is some kind of old fashioned military dress uniform. You can see the outfit 0.26 seconds into the trailer (warning:there are 26 seconds of cancan dancing first). My question is: (1) What sort of uniform was this? Or is it just a costume they made up for the movie? (2) Where/how could a modern person most affordably get a similar outfit of sufficiently good quality to wear around town at fancy occasions that are not Halloween?

Russian History: Why did the Soviet military retain the traditional (western) Officer/Enlisted class binary rather than instituting some other hierarchichal structure? A researcher at my workplace has asked for help finding examples of his topic, early examples of "GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technologies in film and TV", "examples of early precursors to map related technologies". In the military science of Command and Control (C2), is there an official term for deferring a command decision to a superior ranking officer (i.e. non slang for 'passing the buck' or 'kicking it upstairs'). Likewise, is there a term for delegating a duty or responsibility to someone of lower rank?

I need updated info on the best way for a deployed solider in Afghanistan to send and receive calls from the US. He is taking a macbook. Do we buy a GSM cell phone, use Google voice, skype or something else? I am willing to spend $50-100 per month for options. He is starting at Bagram AFB but will move around some. He will be deployed for 6 months starting in May. There will be a period in the summer where the kids will be at camp and will only have access to a phone. Thanks.
Three questions: (1) How many current civil service employees are also reserve/national guard members, (2) How many current civil service employees were also active duty military service members, and (3) How many of both groups retired from the military? I've been to DOD, the Census, OPM ... I'm not having much luck.
