Why did the Soviet military retain the traditional Officer/Enlisted class binary rather than instituting some other hierarchichal structure?
Russian History: Why did the Soviet military retain the traditional (western) Officer/Enlisted class binary rather than instituting some other hierarchichal structure? How did they ideologically justify maintaining two distinct and separate classes, one subordinate to the other, in an army putatively fighting for a classless society? [more inside]

Kind of a two-part question: 1) Looking for affordable, secure, climate controlled storage units north of Kansas City, and 2) dealing with the illogical sense of feeling abandoned by my parents as they talk about being unable to store my stuff in the future. (Sorry, a bit long inside) [more inside]
A researcher at my workplace has asked for help finding examples of his topic, early examples of "GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technologies in film and TV", "examples of early precursors to map related technologies". I found someone else's Ask from earlier this year that hits on some likely ones, but he's on the lookout for older and more diverse instances if you can think of any. More details and examples below the fold! [more inside]

In the military science of Command and Control (C2), is there an official term for deferring a command decision to a superior ranking officer (i.e. non slang for 'passing the buck' or 'kicking it upstairs'). Likewise, is there a term for delegating a duty or responsibility to someone of lower rank?

I need updated info on the best way for a deployed solider in Afghanistan to send and receive calls from the US. He is taking a macbook. Do we buy a GSM cell phone, use Google voice, skype or something else? I am willing to spend $50-100 per month for options. He is starting at Bagram AFB but will move around some. He will be deployed for 6 months starting in May. There will be a period in the summer where the kids will be at camp and will only have access to a phone. Thanks.
Three questions: (1) How many current civil service employees are also reserve/national guard members, (2) How many current civil service employees were also active duty military service members, and (3) How many of both groups retired from the military? I've been to DOD, the Census, OPM ... I'm not having much luck.

NAVY TERMINOLOGY HELP! I'm reading through my grandpa's old flight logs (he was on the crew of a PBY during WWII), and just need help deciphering a couple of terms I see again and again. Both are located in the "Remarks" column of the logbook: FAMILIAR & BOUNCE. Other terms like Ferry, Scouting, Patrol, and Photography are pretty self explanatory, but I have no idea what these two mean. Any help?

I want to join the military but am not physically capable. I want to help out, but since strength and fitness are not my strong points, I am thinking of contributing other services that won't require those. But I heard that everyone, even the people not in physically demanding jobs like medical and intelligence force, must pass physical tests and training. I am willing to train myself beforehand if it's required, but I need to know what I must do and how everything works. Thanks.
