This is somewhat of a fairly negative post, so let me apologize now.
I have a lot of things to be happy about, and I am really struggling to feel happy. I should be grateful for all of the blessings I have, but instead I keep thinking about how much of my life has been wasted on fictional goals and trying to find something that I stand out in.

My wife (27) and I (30) are moving our small family (+2 year old son, -anything that won't fit in 6 suitcases) across the country to Portland, Oregon. In large part we're leaving all of our (supportive, loving) local family and friends looking for adventure and to consciously decide the sort of people we will be (Along with a serious upgrade of location from suburban Central Florida). Have others done a similar reset with themselves or their entire family? Any recommendations on how to be loving and charitable to family and friends while you are leaving and enjoying the next phase? Or pointers on how to meet and embrace a new set of friends and "family"?

Hope this isn't triggering or anything, but I've got a ton of immediately convincing reasons to never open my mouth or pick up my guitar. Is anyone's up for contributing to my list of less-than-persuasive counterarguments?

I desperately need to take my career in another direction, but my degree, training and experience are ridiculously specific. Is it the right time for grad school (again)… or something else? Help me think outside the box.

I have a timeline, a rough plan, various ways to get out of financial entanglements, but I need a purpose and I'm spoiled for choice and I need to figure out how to find out who I am and what I want to do (Yes, very much mid-life crisis-ville).

So I'm looking for stories of people who took up art or some other interesting practice later in life, say after 40, and did really well at it.
Grandma Moses is the typical example of late-life artistic accomplishment. Are there others we might not have heard of?

Get a PhD by 50, or go to pastry school? I'm having a midlife crisis and am considering returning to school instead of launching another business. (Launching another business is already in the planning stages, but no hard commitments have been made.) I've been accepted to a graduate program for neuroscience that will let me do masters work and doctorate work at the same time. On the other hand...culinary school is calling to me...daring me to become a pastry chef.

I have worked in human resources for 15 years (financial services and biotech industries) as a a manager/senior manager and am feeling a bit burnt on the office experience. I very much value the experience of providing counseling and training because I enjoy the process of problem solving with another person. Here's the question... I am 41 and considering going back to school, getting my teaching certificate and bailing out of corporate life. Has anyone else gone through the corporate office to school teacher transition? What was it like? What hadn't you anticipated?
