Is there any way to extract/copy the automation data (e.g. volume, panning in real audio or midi) from a music sequencer so that it can be displayed and analyzed as numerical data in another programme? Is there an indirect way to do the same thing by tracing the line in a graphics programme? [more inside]

A family friend recently gave my kids a first generation iMac G3 (the bondi blue one). We've got loads of PCs around the house, but this is our first Mac. We also have a Yamaha P-120 digital piano. The kids are away for Spring Break and I'd love to surprise them by connecting the two so they can compose, experiment and generally mess around with music on the computer. The problem? Despite strong geekish tendencies, I know nothing about macs, midi or music. And googling isn't leading to anything particularly helpful for someone who knows zero about this stuff. [more inside]

I have been using JamStudio for a while now to quickly throw together backing tracks to practice guitar with. This website is great and highly recommended, but I now want something similar but which is more powerful/flexible, has better audio quality and variety, and which will integrate with my recording software (currently Cubase). Midi based would be perfect. I plan to use this mostly for practicing, but also for some recording. [more inside]

All the Woz buzz reminded me of a program I ran on a Mac 128 at school. It was a music authoring toy, that let you build MIDI tunes by dragging notes onto a staff. I had so much fun with that thing! Any idea what it was called?

Anyone know how to use an Octapad?I have recently aquired a (used) Roland Octapad II, an old MIDI drum trigger set that looks like this, via eBay. I want to test it to see if it works, but I (presently) have no synth/drum machine or anything else with a MIDI IN to test it with. (more inside) [more inside]

Is there a commerical version of something like this eDrum project? I've found severa "drum modules" that take input from drum trigger devices and turn them into MIDI, but most of them are quite expensive. I'm hoping this is because they include built in sound generation. I am simply looking for a box that will take trigger inputs and produce MIDI output for as little as possible.

MIDIFilter: I recently had the good fortune to acquire four MIDI instruments: a Roland Juno 106 and three "modules" (synths w/o keyboards). I want to be able to control the three modules with either the Juno 106 or a MIDI controller (keyboard w/o a synth) or maybe even my Mac. (I use Ableton Live and Reason). [more inside]

Music software reccomendation needed: I'm looking for a very simple VSTi host application for Windows. All it needs to do is load a VSTi plugin and send external MIDI input to it - no sequencing, no effect chains. And, it needs to work on Windows 95. (There seem to be a few of these available for MacOSX, but Google doesn't give me any for Windows) Any suggestions?

So, I've decided to start writing songs. What MIDI programs do people recommend for beginners who want to experiment with scoring multiple parts? Ease of use is more important than sound quality, but some room to grow would be nice, as well...
