What is making this Windows ME laptop freeze every time you plug in the ethernet and the Windows Shell runs?

I consider myself a reasonably good computer person, so the fact that I'm having this problem angers me. I'm working on a laptop for a friend -- a Toshiba Satellite 1805-S253 -- that runs Windows ME. When she gave it to me, it had a trivial problem with the Content Advisor, which I fixed; it also ran fine on a network. Now, 28 critical updates later, it runs fine off the network (which is the way she uses it), but the minute you plug a network cable into its built-in ethernet port and then try to run anything which uses the Windows Shell (e.g., Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, any open/save dialog box), it freezes solid, and you have to manually quit the Explorer process in order to recover it. I've tried everything -- deleted all the clients in the Network control panel, plugged it into three different Ethernet switches, updated every single driver and/or BIOS that I could, prayed to the Holy Gods Of Built-In Hardware -- to no avail. Any ideas?

CSS issues with IE

CSS issues with IE. I'm working on a draft for my new photoblog and IE seems to be rendering part of it about 2 pixels off, but I cannot figure out quite why. Here's the page in question. It shows up fine in Mozilla, but in IE the logo and unordered list menu on the right are pushed to the right about 2 pixels, running over the border. I thought I just needed to use the "box model hack," but when I tried that it didn't work. Any tips? [more inside]

Illustrator -> Windows Files

I have a collection of illustrations that a client wants to use in MS Word. I have them in their original Illustrator 9 format, as well as .psd and low-res jpgs.

Is the best option to convert them to Windows metafiles? (They'll need to be resized depending on newsletter content.) How do I do that?

How can I remove this Arabic text in Office 2002's user interface without reinstalling the software?

Office 2002 seems to think I know arabic: the preview section of each style in the "styles and formatting" pane in Word 2002 shows the name of each style rendered properly, but also shows arabic text next to it. The same thing happens in the preview section of the font dialog. I'm sure I screwed up the install process, but would like to remove the arabic text without having to reinstall Office.

Footnote Formatting in Word

Ack! Why does Microsoft Word move a footnote to the page following the page where the footnote is inserted (e.g. footnote reference in text is on p.14, footnote itself appears on p. 15)? Or spread the footnote across the bottom of two successive pages? It's nothing to do with (a) inserting the footnote ref near the bottom of the page, or (b) having large amounts of existing footnote text on that page. There's plenty of room for the footnote, it just goes on the next page. Thanks!

Dividends vs. stock price

So, Microsoft just announced that they're going to give a special dividend of $3 per share:

http://www.microsoft.com/msft/FAQ/faqdividend.mspx#Question7

Why has the stock price not risen by $3 on this news? It has risen somewhat since yesterday, but only about a dollar.

Doesn't this announcement mean that each share will be automatically worth $3 more, or have I missed something? It seems extremely unlikely that they'd announce something like this and then not do it.

Is there a nice frontend to Lucene to search anything on your PC?

Joel just blogged about Microsoft's recent acquisition of Lookout (a search plug-in for Outlook) and in the comments it turns out that Lookout used a .NET port of the Lucene open-source engine. So, inevitably the question arises; is there any nice front-end to the same engine that can search anything on your PC? (Lookout actually can, but it is unmaintained now). This comes close, but not quite... [more inside]

Excel date problem

RE: Excel: I have an Excel spreadsheet where one column is filled with dates — but the dates aren't showing up properly in the spreadsheet. Instead of looking like a date, they are flat numbers (02/29/2004 is rendered "36584" in the display) — even though the proper date is revealed in the FORMULA BAR as I select each cell. I've set the text type to DATE in the FORMAT dialog... I've even tried setting the text type to PLAIN TEXT. No go. Strangely, the numbers increment with the date (03/07/2004 is "36591"), so I'm guessing there's some equation going on. Suggestions on getting the dates to render properly would be appreciated.

Why does pasting excel charts into word cause the word file to become gigantic?

Is there a way to cut'n'paste charts from Excel into Word, without generating huge Word files? I've tried varieties of paste, 'paste special,' and so on, and I can't figure out why an Excel file of charts that's several hundred KB, always turns into a Word file that's at least several MB. I guess I'm missing something obvious, but have no idea what it is.

Help me recover my documents after partitioning!

I just did a full WinXP reinstall. In the process, I took an 80 gig drive which was partitioned to 10/30/40 gig partitions and repartitioned it to 10/10/20/15/25 partitions. Unfortunately, that 40 gig partition held my "My Documents" holding a bunch of Word documents spanning the years and a lot of digital photos that are irreplaceable.

I've tried a few file recovery programs with limited success (recovered around 20% of my files) however I think the problem is the repartitions have split a lot of the files across two or more partitions. Is there a way I can recombine these partitions and try the file recovery programs again??

How can I replace every occurrence of a drive letter with a different drive letter in a table in an Acess database?

Say I have a database DATA.MDB
Inside DATA.MDB there is a table called ImageTable.
In this table is a field named fimageOriginalFilePath. There are aprox 4000 entries.
Each entry holds an absolute path to a directory on the C drive. For example C:\pictures\10131009
I want to automatically replace the first character of each entry with the letter F. So that each path points to the F drive.
Can it be done? Can it be done without MS Access? Can it be done by a person with no programing skills, knowledge of databases, or understanding of SQL queries and the like? If so, how? Thank you all. [more inside]
