I have speech software in my own voice that I want to use to help me narrate an audiobook I'm planning. But I don't have a good understanding of how to adjust the controls and adjust my voice so that it sounds less like a Cylon and more like me. [more inside]
Microsoft discontinued support for its Microsoft Money software several years ago. I'm still using their Sunset / Deluxe version 17 and I am dreading the day that it will no longer work on future versions of Windows (I barely got it going on Windows 10, so it can't last forever). What are some alternatives to Microsoft Money? [more inside]
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T460 laptop. I purchased it with the Windows 7 Professional downgrade because I was not ready to make the Windows 10 leap. The free upgrade option ends in two months. I am trying to decide whether or not to go for it. I welcome all opinions, but especially those of IT people who can tell me what configuration, privacy, and hardware tradeoffs I'm making. I have one calendar, in Outlook. I'd like to view and be able to print a calendar that ONLY lists certain types of appointments: ones that occur on weekends, and ones where I am out of the office (whether I'm out of office on weekends or not). As a bonus, I'd like to have the option to view this special calendar in Outlook, but I'd settle for being able to print it. Basically, I want to view my calendar WITHOUT my Monday to Friday work meetings on it. Is this possible?
can anyone suggest a portable recharger for a Microsoft Surface tablet?
I have an original Surface that has a cracked screen and will no longer boot. It has a solid state drive. Can I pull the drive and re-purpose it? The camera, maybe, too. [more inside]
I will be reinstalling mac OSX Yosemite because of constant problems with it but I am looking to retain the folders that have been previosuly created to organise my mails. I am using Outlook 2011 as my mail client. Does using: File - Export - selecting outlook for mac data file (.olm), when imported back, retain the previous folder structure that I have used to organise my mails? If not could anyone suggest how I could keep the existing folder organisation? Many thanks!

Is there anything MS Excel does that LibreOffice doesn't that an undergrad econ major is likely to have to do? I am not asking about esthetics. I know one is prettier. Is there a crucial missing capability? Likewise Google Sheets. Anything important missing? Or, something that just works so differently as to be crazy making? [more inside]
So, I am finally giving up my last personal connection to Microsoft, my home PC running Windows 7 Home Premium, and switching to a really gorgeous iMac. Everything else in my life -- phone, tablet, watch, and laptop -- are already Apple. What preparations should I engage in while waiting for the new iMac to be delivered? And what do you recommend for smoothly getting my data (photos, documents, Quicken file, etc.) from my PC to my new Mac? And is there anything else you would advise I do as I make the transition? Many thanks.
I'm a Mac user with a lot of Word 97 files from the mid-1990s. Even if I add extension ".doc", I can't get Pages or other word processors to open them. TextEdit will open them, but with a lot of nonsense characters. Worst of all, Spotlight's not indexing the files (not sure why). [more inside]

Recovery partition doesn't work, and the machine didn't come with install discs (apparently this is a thing?). I have a valid product key and a semi-working OEM Windows installation, but can't seem to find a legit copy of the system software online, just sketchy .info sites. [more inside]
We've got some computers that run monitoring software that we'd like to remain visible. We also want to lock these computers so they require a password if someone wants to use the keyboard/mouse. Turning on the lock screen satisfies the second requirement, but not the first. Turning it off satisfies the first, but not the second... Does anyone know of anything that will do what we want?
When I click on the 'Manage Account' button in the Account settings menu in my copy of Word 365, it launches a new web page - stores.office.com - where I can then log-in to my account. All straightforward. But at the same time a separate tab is also launched for the site www.59e.com, which is all in Chinese. What is this? I'm in the UK, using Firefox.

I'm looking to buy a sub-$200 tablet primarily to play Hearthstone and watch Netflix. If I understand correctly, the Hearthstone app is not out for Android yet but it should be available soon.

I am trying to summarize a table of thousands of values into simple year ranges. It should be simple. So basically, there is a table that looks something like this: PIPE_PLR_Y MILES 1912 0.06 1914 0.48 1930 1.43 1942 1.32 1929 0.85 1925 2.00 1914 0.95 1929 0.42 ... The table has many, many values between about 1900 and today. I would like to make a table like this: Year_Range MILES 1900 - 1909 23.6 1910 - 1919 64.3 1920 - 1929 73.1 ... Again, I'm using Access 2010. Any help would be massively appreciated.
I don't just mean in page view. I am translating a book and would like to produce a dual-language book with the original on the left and the translation on the right, like in the Loeb library and so forth. I can sort of do this with two columns, but they're not really independent. (If I keep typing in one, it'll eventually bleed into the other.) [more inside]

For some recent while, probably since updating the OS X Mavericks, Microsoft Word for OS X keeps coming to the foreground on its own when I'm doing other things, as long as a document is open in Word. Dear HiveMind, I am finally waking up, smelling the coffee ... and seeing that I must say goodbye to XP. My machines are old (but not ancient) ThinkPads - one T60 and three X60s maxed out on RAM (systems built 2006-2008). I'm looking for an honorable seller of Win 7. [more inside]

Seriously if I knew this was the story - wouldn't have gotten a brand new webcam today. But so here it is - Livecam VX800 - uninstalled, reinstalled - and as a plug and play install for *New Hardware* (XP) is not recognizing it as a webcam - but as *USB Audio Device* Then when I check it in Device Manager under Imaging Devices, it's a *USB video device*. I am still using Office 2003 for personal use. It meets my limited needs perfectly well, and I want to avoid learning curves and costs associated with alternatives if at all possible. I understand that Microsoft will no longer be issuing security patches for it soon, so there are potential risks in continuing to use it, but how serious are those risks given my actual pattern of use? And can they be easily mitigated by avoiding various features or behavior? [more inside]
My church is upgrading its computers and the old copies of Office are long since vanished, evidently. (If they ever existed; I kind of suspect the last person who did IT stuff may have pirated it.) So, we're buying new versions. But our office manager is... well, she's not at all computer literate. She's kind of continuing to be employed more on a charity basis than because she's actually very capable. But I need to get her able to actually use the basic features of Word, Excel, and Publisher on the new versions, in the simplest way possible that does not involve my personally sitting with her for days at a time. Help? [more inside]

I use an ancient MS Natural Keyboard, but the main thing that's relevant here is the key mechanism. The Goog will show you models old and new. I recently took mine apart, cleaned the plastic parts with water, got it nice and clean (years of accumulated cookie crumbs, etc.) The problem is - now the keys are kind of stiff. For example, if I strike them at a slight angle, they don't depress as smoothly as before. The standard advice online is to clean a keyboard to prevent sticky keys, but I have the opposite problem. Is there some kind of lube/oil/spray I can use?
My company uses Exchange for email. Since they block POP and IMAP access for security reasons, I cannot use Gmail (or Google Apps) to read my email. They do support Active Sync, so Apple Mail and Outlook both work fine. I would prefer a web based option, as close to gmail as possible. Are there any other options out there for me? [more inside]
