it'll be just like a sleepover, except not!

Tomorrow I leave for a "work retreat" my manager has arranged. Four days and three nights, with her and my two colleagues who make up our team. In a rental house. With every minute planned out. I'm starting to panic a bit and need survival tips. [more inside]

Work Peer Keeps Doing my Job; Help.

I'm a relatively newer addition to a special education team, having started in October although I am a 12+ year veteran teacher. There are 5 teachers who share a classroom, we each have caseloads of about 30 students each. A big part of our work beyond supporting the students is paperwork. We have a lot of reports to write, state requirements to file, etc. The problem is there's one other teacher who double-checks everything I do and is making my job a nightmare. I want her to stop but she won't. [more inside]

How do I prepare myself to resolve this toxic situation with my boss?

My boss and I got along fairly well before I got promoted to a full-time position. She was clear about priorities but fairly hands-off, which I liked, and open to questions (of which I had many, since I'm just starting out). At the time of the promotion, I was given many, many additional responsibilities and started to run into a micromanaging side of her I hadn't seen before. And a weird, contradictory expectation. If I asked her things, she started to tell me to figure them out myself. She wanted me to take initiative. Great, I thought. I'm fine with that. Except that when I started taking initiative, she was then critical if I didn't do things in exactly the way she would have done them.... [more inside]

Micromanage LIKE A BOSS

Academic research environment with human subject psychology experiments. I am in the process of being promoted, from leading day-to-day operations of a large, important project to a "lab manager" supervisory role, overseeing everything that goes on (including said project). Problem is, I'm having trouble letting go of my old role and end up micromanaging the two people who now hold it, and it's not good for anyone. Help. [more inside]
