I have about 200 rolls of microfilm to be tossed out. There is no charity that would want them, guaranteed. Can anyone think of anything interesting I could do with them?

How do I improve the legibility of the horrible old Cyrillic newspaper microfilm negatives I am scanning? The main problem is that the background is often faded and hard to distinguish from the text. Is there some clever software trickery that will solve it?

Is it possible to use a 35mm film scanner -- such as a Minolta DiMAGE or Nikon Coolscan -- to digitize 35mm microfilm? Film scanners like these are much cheaper than microfilm scanners and take up much less space. Has anyone tried this and been successful?

Multi-page tiffs: I'm currently working on a project which involves scanning letters from microfilm onto a laptop. We save letters with more than one page as multi-page tiffs for logistics reasons. What I'm wondering is if there is a way to edit the individual pages after the fact (cropping, brightness, contrast etc. basic stuff)? Preferably free/inexpensive software.
