So I will be staying at The Standard Hotel in Miami next week. I will only be staying there on weeknights. From what I read on the internet, valet is $37 and takes sometimes an hour to retrieve your car. Thus I have several questions:

My cousin, who also happens to be my favorite little dude on the planet, is turning nine in a couple weeks. For most of his life, I've lived on the other side of the country so he really only knows me through infrequent holiday visits, but for the next few months we're going to be in the same city and I'm super excited for us to get to know each other better during this time. Because I've been a deadbeat cousin, I don't know specifically what he's into (although he likes typical high energy 8 year old stuff like wrestling his friends, reading books, video games, and exploding coke bottles with mentos) but I'd like to get him something completely awesome anyway.

North Miami filter: In a short while I will find myself at short notice staying in a hotel in North Miami, on Biscayne Boulevard near 123rd Street. I will have a car. What kind of area have I ended up in, is there anything I should see nearby in the evening, and most importantly: is there anywhere nearby for a really good breakfast?

I am meeting my parents (both in their late 60s - early 70s, but fairly active) in Miami for the whole of next week. They're flying in from abroad and I am flying from California. We had plans to drive around the area a little bit and see the sights with not a lot of planning, but that was before
Isaac came along. I haven't seen my parents in a while and it will be good to spend some time together, so I am not cancelling the trip. What are some good things to do in the Miami area in the wake of a tropical storm? We'll be staying in South Beach and we have a car. Tips of great restaurants, museums and (indoor?) activities are appreciated.

Can you suggest some amazing places for me to visit within a ~10 hour drive of Orlando, Florida? I will be leaving Orlando on September 1st and have to be back either in Orlando or in Atlanta, Georgia afternoon of 7th September for my flight back to London, England. New Orleans is one enticing idea so far, Miami slightly less so...but very keen to get some suggestions from the hive mind. Everything from historic landmarks to city culture to the big wide open considered (and I'm a big fan of freshwater swimming too).

I'm looking for recommendations for first-date ideas in Miami. The catch is that the first date is with someone who lives 2000 miles away from me, and we're both traveling to Miami from elsewhere. I want to spend time getting to know him in a low-key way, but also see a little bit of Miami while I'm there. Suggestions for places we should see/those we should avoid?

Recommendations for traveling south of Miami. We are planning to fly into Miami, rent a car and drive south down Highway 1 toward the Keys. We want to go down in Feb or March. Where should I focus my research on the area to decide which destination to go to and what we must see or do along the way. We want the adult version of spring break. That means fun parties in the evening, exploring historical or interesting places during the day. Warm sandy beaches at some point are a must. Anyone know anything about that area? There is just so much there I don't know where to start.

MiamiFilter: At the end of May, as part of a longer trip, I will be spending a couple of days in Miami, I will be staying at a hostel in Miami Beach. This is my first hostelling experience and I am a bit concerned about theft of my belongings since one of the hostel reviews I've read indicate there may not always be enough lockers for all the guests (I chose it for location and social aspects). I will also have to park a rental car, probably in a municipal parking garage. Is it safe to leave some clothes/stuff in the car? How big is car crime in this area? Finally, I've read various tips online about how to survive the hostel experience, but any specific tips applicable to Miami would be appreciated.

Looking for a not too expensive (hopefully under $100) place to stay in Miami for one night. I have an overnight layover in Miami coming up. I'm getting in at night and am leaving early the next morning, won't have a car, and am hoping to find a decent/cheap place to stay that is walking distance (or a short cab ride) to places to get some food and drinks.
