Metafilter and other social media sites are excellent places to learn new things. Yet it's probably true for everyone that most of the world isn't like me and doesn't like the things I like, and I don't have the time to check every topic for interest value. How do you use Metafilter and similar sites to most efficiently find topics/people that interest you? [more inside]

What is the name of that French song from maybe five years back which had an animated music video of a little girl running through the pastures and playing? After a certain time, she stops playing, and she exits what turns out to be a big stage. A line of children are waiting their turn to enter the stage and play. [more inside]

I'm looking for a great short educational cartoon about oil and petroleum that may or may not have been posted in the blue a long time ago, definitely elsewhere on the net. My extensive searching has uncovered nothing and someone else may simply remember the title. It was 50's cartoony, obviously biased in favor of the industry, but seemed scientifically accurate. Any clue?

Very weird. The only website I can get to right now is the Metafilter family. Everything else times out with the error "www.cnn.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again." Dozens of other sites return the same error.

I'm on a cable modem. Win XP. My vonage phone works fine, as does email. I restarted the computer and the router. What the heck is going on?

My memory fails me - there's a funny video that made the rounds online (including mefi) that was a fake industrial film for a device with a name like "interociter". It was loaded with all kinds of nonsensical technical terms. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to it.

Problems with metafilter.

For some reason, I can log into the ask metafilter section but cannot log into the standard metafilter site.

Even after clearing cookies, history, cache... when I login I just get the metafilter site presented to me as if I was not logged in... If I intentionally enter the wrong password I am told that I have errored, but cannot log into metafilter.

This happens using Firefox and IE6. I've even tried computers at friends houses and the same thing happens.

Is this because I close the browser without logging out?

I've never had this happen on another site.

Recently, metafilter style sites were all the rage (using freefilter or metaphilter.) It seems (sadly) most of these have withered from neglect. I'd like to get my own version of a *filter going but the freefilter instructions make my non-tech head feel like it is going to explode. Anyone out there who gets this stuff want to set it up for me? I'd need the whole setup (sans graphics) ie. layout, freefilter and ongoing support if there are any maintenance problems. Name your ballpark price inside this thread and I'll get in touch.

Is there a firefox extension or an easy to use program that can block specific websites? While I don't normally have a problem, I've been noticing that I get on Mefi and basically don't get off. If I don't get on, that would probably solve the problem. The best and easiest way I can think of doing that, is a program. So: suggestions?

A while ago, on my old site, I posted this parody of MeFi. (It was subsequently, um, noticed. Yeah, sorry about that.) I thought a fitting tribute would be to post it to my user page. As is plainly obvious, tis fux0red for I am not l33t. Or else, there's some sort of cotton-pickin' interference, as the anchor tags seem to be all kerfluuey. Help, pwease?

Can someone please point me to an old Metafilter FPP? It was about an annual test or exam given at a university (I believe in the UK) that was supposed to be extremely difficult. It was a general knowledge quiz, and 10 out of 10 is impossible, according to the professor who administers it. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I know I must suck hard core, because I can't get the search engine to work, but does anyone remember where that MeFi post about a recording engineer's "real" stories about working on a major artist's album, which devolves into Spinal Tap-esque antics? I read a description of Metallica's new documentary, and it sounds almost exactly the same, so I wanted to read it again. I've put everything I could think of into the search engine, and have come up empty. Can anyone help me out?

Metafilter, as a source to journalists for story ideas and also as a reservoir of good writing for plagiarists, has been discussed on a recent Metatalk thread. How could I acquire a script (I don't have much of a clue about this, technically), for my Mac (OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.2.8) to run automated searches looking for matchups on chunks of text from my 500 (or whatever it is) pages of Metafilter commentary ? In order to gear-up for the MeFi Swap I started making myself more familiar with iTunes. While doing so, I found out that even when one checks the "none" setting for seconds between songs, iTunes still ads a short gap between songs. Does anyone have some suggestions for how I might get iTunes to do Disc-at-Once (DAO)? If not, suggestions for other programs are appreciated, but realise I don't have Toast-like money handy. Thanks!
