Photo EXIF and system metadata

I changed phones a few weeks ago, and the transfer utility that copied data from phone to phone screwed up the /system/ timestamp of my photos. Unfortunately, this changed the sort order, so I can't find anything. How can I fix the data? [more inside]

Choosing Kindle search terms for non-genre short fiction?

I'm self-publishing a set of short stories on Kindle, and need to choose search terms, which are critical for helping new readers stumble upon my book. However, most examples I see are for either non-fiction, self-help type books, or genre fiction. All I've come up with are overly broad descriptors like "everyday heroes," or ridiculously specific ones like "pediatric nurse kills alligator by hacking gasoline generator." Is there some sort of middle ground, or perhaps a genre term I'm unfamiliar with? [more inside]

How can I edit metadata (e.g., author's name) for a .mobi file?

So I've been downloading books to my iPad's Kindle app from Amazon, and also downloading from Project Gutenberg to my desktop PC and mailing them to my Kindle address to get them on the iPad. And I've got a small but annoying problem. In the ebooks it sells from its site, Amazon lists the author as, for example, "Doyle, Arthur Conan," while the .mobi files from Project Gutenberg list the author as "Arthur Conan Doyle." Thus the Amazon files sort under D for Doyle while the Project Gutenberg files show up under A for Arthur. Is there a way to edit the .mobi files to change the author's names to match Amazon's format and get everybody's works to come together in the same place?

PDF metadata extraction for file management

I know there are a lot of earlier posts about PDF management software (and others on Chronicle of Higher Education and elsewhere) but they seem out of date, and don't work for my situation. Need: keep PDF library but must be able to import existing downloaded files and extract metadata. Zotero did this using Google Scholar and it worked well, but Google now severely limits how much much metadata looking can be done from the IP they detect. I don't have the skills to work around this. So the problem remains: is there any way to import a large number of already-downloaded PDFs to PDF management software, recovering metadata? (Neither Papers nor Mendeley handle metadata issue adequately, other virtues aside; EndNote is hopeless.). If there is no available solution, what would be the most efficient way to rebuild the library? Find all the papers on-line again and download the bibliographic information, which would be vastly tedious? I am on OSX but open-minded. Thanks.

How to screen thousands of online images to download and catalog hundreds?

A friend wants to find, list, and study Renaissance paintings that depict a certain subject. She can study photo reproductions, but her on-line searches turn up many thousands of potentially relevant jpgs, including many duplicates in various sizes. She would like to get some help -- perhaps crowdsourcing with a micropayment for each image downloaded -- if she can avoid duplicate submissions and also acquire accurate, searchable metadata (artist, title, etc.) linked to each unique submission. Have you got any suggestions for implementing such a collection effort when the collector can't afford to hire a research assistant? [more inside]

How can I help my coworkers create XML documents to store metadata?

Generating XML documents help? I work with the county health department, and have been asked to come up with a way to create, store and manipulate metadata for various datasets we store internally on a network drive. Basically I think the simplest thing to do is to create an xml file stored in the same directory with any dataset. Preferably I can do this with infopath 2003 or free software, and using the Dublin Core standard for metadata. I've seen the 5 year old answers on Dublin Core Metadata from this Ask, but I need to let my coworkers create the data first, and that mostly covers storage/database solutions. Looking through various DC list archives hasn't been helpful. [more inside]
