Has anyone done any sociology-type studies about online message board behavior between users? The stuff that we're used to - flame outs, pile ons, and the like. Bonus points for any books that might be a good read.

I need a message board / discussion forum for an online community that's been evicted from its old home. What's the best message board software out there, and are there particular extensions or services I need on my server in order to run it? It doesn't have to be free software, but it can't be super-extravagant, either.

phpBB, Invision, etc., are all great forum systems. The main drawback, for me, is that they all seem so bloated and cluttered. Statistics, rankings, avatars, signatures, etc., all seem to get in the way of actual content. Are there any good, robust, flexible, but more lightweight message board systems out there?
