The late 80s/90s seemed to be a golden era for "message" movies. Not after school special but "let's explore a theme" type movies. Why is this? [more inside]
How can I be sure a person read the message I sent them recently? I follow them, they don't follow me. The "seen" or "eye-with-username" icon under my message is nowhere to be found BUT the person liked one of my pictures yesterday, so I assume they did read it...? Otherwise they definitely wouldn't have checked out my profile. More details inside. [more inside]
My company switched from using Office365 to Google for our online stuff, and the one thing I miss is the ability to filter emails based only on the message body. In Outlook, you could filter based on just the message body and on the actual html of the message. I can't figure out how to either of these things in Gmail. Is there a way to do it?
I would like to have an important birthday message displayed on a sign or marquee in a town within 5-10 miles of the highway, somewhere between the Vermont/Maine state line and Portland/Falmouth, ME. Difficulty level: this coming weekend-ish (May 29-June 1)! Do you have a Hail Mary you could throw my way? Thanks in advance.

I read news coverage about metafilter members helping to solve the "Decoding Cancer-addled Ramblings" and thought I should give it a shot for coded messages we found in my Grandfather's posessions after his passing. Although my Grandfather did not have cancer and was of sound mind at the time these documents were sent (circa 1921), he and his brother sent some coded messages to one another for some reason. My family has tried to figure out the messages, but to no avail. Some think the coding was simply used to save money on the cablegrams/telegraphs, others think it was because the text was being sent to Germany during WWII time frame, and others think it was because there was some suspicion about co-workers who may try to access or read the cablegrams/telegraphs. I recently started reading all my email on my smartphone. I still want to download every message in Thunderbird on my Mac (to archive it), but I don't want to manually mark everything as read after downloading it. Is there a way to either disable the "unread" flag, or auto-mark all new messages as read when they are received? [more inside]
My windows look out onto a train platform where thousands of tired, stressed, or lonely people stand and wait every day in New York. On other platforms I've seen people put signs up in their windows as messages for the folks waiting for a train. What message could I put up in my window to make people smile or make their days just a little bit better?

Looking for a website that lets me do this: For a set group of people, each submits a message. You can see who's sent a message, but not what the contents of the message are. When everyone's submitted a message, all the messages are revealed. This is for an online Magic: the Gathering tournament - we're having everyone submit an entry before anyone sees what anyone else submitted.
WTH? Message in a bottle, secret admirer, or random gibberish? A friend's mom took her car to the shop (SW US) and left a whiteboard (which she uses to communicate) inside. Allshare Error Message filter: We have recently purchased a Samsung Smart Blu-Ray Player. The big attraction for us was that it would enable us to play shows downloaded from the Internet via the Allshare program. However, after I downloaded Allshare and tried to run it, I received the following error: "The Allshare shared server has shut down. It will restart." I would close the message, and it would come back again and again. [more inside]
