The Etiquette of Networking

Teach me how to make the most of this opportunity to network, while avoiding specific pitfalls like drooling on myself or saying dumb nervous things. Difficulty level: I don't currently work in the field, so people are going to be less interested in networking with me than I am with them (unless they are actively seeking a mentee, or open to it). Help me level up as a writer

I am a 32 y/o creative writer (poetry, short fiction, essays) and arts journalist. I have an MFA and I have been very well-published in lit mags and on websites (but no book yet). I have two poetry manuscripts that I’ve circulated, and both have had some near-misses. I am very prolific and always have projects going, and I submit often. However, I feel a lack of professional traction, and I am hoping some of you have ways I can level up. [more inside]

Help me learn how to maintain friendships?

I am a good friend, I meet loads of interesting people, but I am terrible at maintaining friendships. Help me not end up alone, on my couch, eating out of a tuna can every night wondering what happened to all my friends. [more inside]

mentors for sport?

I used to produce a public radio show and do journalism. I love writing and the work of program-making. They say everyone should change their careers at least once in their life. I moved in fundraising, which I do not honestly think is in itself a career. Since October 2010 I am the commercial director of a pro basketball team in England. I don't know how long the job will last but it has brought a lot of meaning to my life to do real executive producing again. I would like to find a mentor in sports business but most mentoring organizations in the UK are not equipped to deal with this request. What are some logical resources in Europe and the USA I should be looking at?

Finding a new wolfpack(s) -- Looking for advice on finding mentors, professional, exercise or party friends

I'd prefer to not be a one-man wolfpack, but I am rather introverted and take some time to get close to people. Due to friends' babies/marriage/moving for jobs I've found I'm in my 30's now and am looking for a new group of friends to run with. My best friend (also my last close adventurous homie) has been ensnared by a female. And she's ready to breed. So after I fulfill my Best Man duties, I probably won't be seeing him too much anymore and am looking for advice on how to find new friends in four areas: exercise, professional, party or mentors.
