Red or orange hardcover darkly funny book about mental illness

I saw a book on a "featured" table last winter in a bookstore, which enchanted me, but I don't remember any of the key features that would allow me to buy it; namely author or title. I remember that it was red or orange, hardcover, consisted (mostly) of illustrations, was darkly funny, was written by a British man (?) and contained cartoony scenarios ruminating on anxiety or depression. Any idea what the book was? I assume that it was a new publication around the end of 2013. I think the title had the word "Brain" in it. [more inside]

Can I help an old, distant friend with apparent mental illness?

An old friend now living in another state looked me up. At first they seemed to have been experiencing the aftereffects of significant but ordinary traumatic events in life. I now believe they are struggling with significant mental illness that they are in denial of. I don't know how I could help them or if it's even a good idea to try. [more inside]

What were people paranoid about before modern technology?

Due to some personal motivations, I've been reading a lot about paranoia lately and most of the delusions I hear about involve modern technology, ie. wire taps, hidden cameras, etc. What are some examples of paranoid delusions before that technology existed?

She is my psychiatrist. She told me she is bi-polar. Now what?

How did you react when your psychiatrist disclosed their own mental illness to you during a session? Have any other mefites had this experience or heard of it? During my 4th consultation (over 6 weeks) with a psychiatrist who is treating me she sort of casually disclosed that she herself suffers from bi-polar disorder and that she has in fact been hospitalised 3 times in the last 12 months due to it. What is this movie?

I saw a movie a few years ago that was really excellent. Unfortunately, I do not remember the title, or really much of a plot. After scouring google and coming up with nothing, I've come to the great hive mind for an answer. What I remember: the central character is a young boy, who I believe grows up in a family where at one point or another in the film, each member of the family ends up in a mental institution. I think there is a mother, father, and possibly sister. I think the boy becomes a writer at the end. I believe the final shot is of an old man (the boy, grown up?) smiling, then walking up a warmly lit staircase. I know this is a long shot but, any ideas, metafilter? This has been bothering me for years. [more inside]

Tool kit for treating mental illness.

You are familiar with what things are effective in treating someone who is bipolar, paranoid, and/or schizophrenic. Please tell me about these things. If the person is willing to accept help, what type of help are they likely to receive? If medications help, what is the nature of the medications and where could one go to learn more about them? If there are behavioral options, where can one begin to learn about these? What else is out there? [more inside]

Someone I grew up with has seen me in mental health treatment. Now what?

And I'm not talking just a visit to the shrink-- I'm in a program for the "severely-disabled mentally ill" and this man walked in as part of a group of social work students touring the facility. I am nearly 100% sure he recognized me and understood I was there as a client. He and the other students will be coming back to the program to volunteer over the next few weeks. They will be signing confidentiality agreements at that time, but haven't yet. I have social anxiety/phobia and this presses all my buttons. How do I deal? [more inside]

I want a new job. I'm not well qualified. What can I do?

I've been working a data-entry job for almost two years now. I got it as a temp position shortly after finishing college. It became full-time a year later. I graduated from a good school, but late, and with mediocre grades in journalism, my major. I stuck to the temp job because I bombed out of freelance work. This failure aggravated my self-loathing and convinced me to abandon journalism, for which I have shown little talent. I abandoned it for a dead-end job. I would like a job with better chances for promotion and with better pay. How, if at all, do I find such a job, considering my mental health, which sabotages each stage of the hunt, and my poor qualifications, which don't help? [more inside]

I loved him, he loved me, but it was complicated and now he's dead.

I just ended a year-long relationship two months ago with the love of my life. He was a brilliant, creative, talented and generous man with Asperger's and a long, complicated history of severe mental illness. He was an Army vet and had lived an incredible life, full of adventures but also extreme trauma and heartbreak. He killed himself on Friday. How do I go on? [more inside]

Handling bipolar drama

My distant sibling, diagnosed with bipolar some time ago (I don't know any solid details, unfortunately), fell out of touch with me for years. Now he's back in touch, but mostly just to drop dramatic texts on me ("I'm at the hospital", or, tonight, "I'm with the police, I'll call you when I'm released") and then not answer my increasingly plaintive texts or phone calls. I haven't been the prime target of this sort of thing before, what seems to be big swings of mental illness with the hospital and sheriffs and police involved, and the person involved giving me a bit of information but then nothing. Can anyone with more experience give me some advice as to ways I might handle it? [more inside]
