She is my psychiatrist. She told me she is bi-polar. Now what?

How did you react when your psychiatrist disclosed their own mental illness to you during a session? Have any other mefites had this experience or heard of it? During my 4th consultation (over 6 weeks) with a psychiatrist who is treating me she sort of casually disclosed that she herself suffers from bi-polar disorder and that she has in fact been hospitalised 3 times in the last 12 months due to it. Mentally unstable sister, I fear for her young children

Background: My sister (38) has a story of emotional instability and I fear for my niece (8) and baby nephew (Down syndrome). My sister was molested by my father when she was in her late teens, which might have something to do with her current condition. She is extremely dependent on (and at the same time very hostile to) my mother. My mother (divorced, late 60s), in turn, is struggling all by herself to help her daughter and the little children, while having to deal with lack of money and her own (physical) health issues. Tool kit for treating mental illness.

You are familiar with what things are effective in treating someone who is bipolar, paranoid, and/or schizophrenic. Please tell me about these things. If the person is willing to accept help, what type of help are they likely to receive? If medications help, what is the nature of the medications and where could one go to learn more about them? If there are behavioral options, where can one begin to learn about these? What else is out there? [more inside]

Handling bipolar drama

My distant sibling, diagnosed with bipolar some time ago (I don't know any solid details, unfortunately), fell out of touch with me for years. Now he's back in touch, but mostly just to drop dramatic texts on me ("I'm at the hospital", or, tonight, "I'm with the police, I'll call you when I'm released") and then not answer my increasingly plaintive texts or phone calls. I haven't been the prime target of this sort of thing before, what seems to be big swings of mental illness with the hospital and sheriffs and police involved, and the person involved giving me a bit of information but then nothing. Can anyone with more experience give me some advice as to ways I might handle it? [more inside]

How can I help my friend get help for suspected mental illness?

I'm sure that my friend (who lives cross-country) is dealing with un-diagnosed untreated mental illness. I'm 99% sure it's bipolar disorder, based on lots of information and evidence. I don't want this thread to be about diagnosing, but rather about how to help (I think we can agree that the steps I should take to help would be largely the same regardless of what he's grappling with, right?). Bipolar family member draining everyone's health

My sister (in her 20's) has recently been diagnosed as bipolar, after many manic episodes that have previously been attributed to depression. Right now she is staying with our parents and driving them crazy - every time I talk to my mom on the phone she is either close to tears or past that line. I have no idea how to help, maybe you do? I'm cured! Now what?

I've spent the last fifteen years suffering from bipolar disorder (bipolar II with the emphasis on depression) and a sleep disorder.
