At univerisity in the 90s there was a book in the library which featured (as far as I recall) a man in a darkened room with electricity being passed through him sentried on either side by men in white coats (not an electric chair). The caption was "Odyssey of Pain". I have a feeling it was from a LIFE Magazine collection -- it suited their style -- but I was hoping someone might be able to confirm I've not been imagining it all these years.

How do I get myself in shape mentally? If I spent my life on the couch eating junk food, you might recommend running, weight lifting, a healthy diet, or yoga to get me in shape. An elderly relative, once technically savvy, now goes into fugue states where, in his confusion, he dismantles computer and A/V setups, with no one in the household to reconnect them properly. I'm looking for a way of securing A/V and computer connections while leaving the function of the devices still accessible. The alternative so far is spending endless hours with the cable company to get them to send someone to help, or paying someone else to come by. Phone instructions are no good, and there is no one in the household who can help.
Need name of a book of fiction reviewed several months ago (NYT, WSJ or LA Times) about memory loss. A woman in her 30's wakes up (next to her husband she does not recognize) and remembers nothing about her current life.

Do you know any examples of evocative food writing that is focused on how specific foods awaken the writer's memory or otherwise serve to connect time and history with what we eat? Think Proust's famous madeleine, or Nigel Slater's Toast: the Story of a Boy's Hunger. I am especially interested in accounts from non-white, non-American or non-European, and female authors.

I've had this image of a face stuck in my head for a few weeks now, and I'm sure that it's from a TV show I saw as a child. I believe the image may have come from a skit about a sketch artist trying to identify someone, and that -- within the skit -- pieces of that face were erased and re-drawn. Maybe at some point, a hat is drawn onto the top of his head? I want to say this skit may have been on Sesame Street. Can you tell me what skit I'm thinking of?

For much of my childhood, the annual airing of ABC Stage 67's Emmy-winning production of Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory, starring the absolutely incomparable Geraldine Page, was at the very core of how my family understood Christmas. In my time, it aired on local PBS stations. Sometime in the 80s, though, it disappeared, and is only available in a black & white version of questionable quality. What happened, and where did it go? How can we recover this treasure and share it with a broader audience? [more inside]
