AskMeFi inspired question. Yesterday someone wrote a thread on hearing auditory hallucinations while falling asleep. This got me thinking about dreams and I wonder if people get the same mysterious phenomenon that I do. [more inside]

I had a vivid dream last night and when I awoke I thought "man, I'm never forgetting that one." It's been a couple hours and I barely remember anything from it. So my question is why do we forget dreams? Is it because there is a lack of pattern (since they're often so oddball and different from our daily lives)? Is it because they exist as ideas rather than experiences (I forget good ideas all the time, but remember things I've actually done)? Or is it because we experience them in a semi-concious state (if we were more fully aware, we might remember more?)? Anyone got any leads on this? [more inside]
