Asking on behalf of (The Rt Hon.) MP, who currently has spotty internet access while he travels around Australia. Where are the best places to 1) see an improv comedy show in Sydney, 2) see a punk/hardcore show in Melbourne, 3) get to relatively quickly from either of those cities to be able to see the outback (as opposed to the bush, which has already been seen on this trip)? In an Australian rental unit, how likely is it that our landlords will expect the caulking in the shower to be clean at move-out, and if they will, should we do the caulking ourselves to avoid paying a handyman for this simple but tedious and probably time-consuming job? [more inside]

I want to buy a coffee plunger (French press) somewhere local- either in Preston, Reservoir, Thornbury, Northcote, North Fitzroy or Coburg. I'm assuming a cafe might be a good bet, or a homewares store but I couldn't find anyone selling them in a few I tried on high st, Northcote yesterday. I'd like to avoid a mall. [more inside]

My wife got a temporary academic position in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I have happily followed her here. After almost six years of working in childcare, I would really like to get into a new line of work. Something physically active and room for some actual advancement. I just turned 30 and feel a bit like I have been wasting too much time treading water in childcare. I have a few years experience as a prep cook and dishwasher, and years of experience volunteering in non-profits and community organisations. We don't have tons of friends here and I am feeling a bit isolated and discouraged. Any advice or motivation you can share would be greatly appreciated. More details below of course! [more inside]

Husband and I need a holiday. Problem is, we won't have much money because we've just bought a house, which came with a lot of bills. Suggestions for weekends away for the next few weeks or short breaks in September school holidays, leaving from Melbourne, Victoria, that cost less than $180/night? Complication-- I'm 19 weeks pregnant. [more inside]

What are the most fun things to do in Melbourne on holiday? I've got 4 days as a solo female traveller in my 30s. I'm not into footy but open to shopping, good places to eat (cheaply), cultural things and tourist attractions. Inspire me!

I have inherited a watch that was purchased a few years ago for about $2000. It has rarely been worn and I think it has all of the box/paperwork with it (from what I can see from similar watches online), including the purchase receipt. My question is where/how can I sell it? Either by listing it online, but there seems to be so many websites, or in person via a second hand dealer or similar?
I've seen lots of watch websites, but are some better than others? Especially considering I don't have a profile or history on such sites. Thanks

I'll have four days in Melbourne a couple of weeks from now. What should I do? I'll be alone, staying in the central city and hiring a bike. I'm interested in: scenic cycle routes, standup comedy, hanging out in pleasant places with a book, cheap but delicious ethnic food, contemporary theatre, massage and other spa-like pampering, outdoor markets, interesting bike shops, nice bars for a quiet solo drink, small music venues and artisan chocolate/baking/sweets. And anything else wonderful and uniquely Melbourne that you think someone with those sorts of interests might like. (Vintage shopping too, but I've already got lots of advice on that from this question
) Melburnians, I am so desperately in need of a break. Please help me have the best weekend ever!

I am seeking a physician in Melbourne, Australia who specializes in, or at least has substantial experience with, Testosterone Replacement Therapy for men.
I've tried a hundred Google searches but I can't find anyone close -- only general listings for endocrinologists or urologists.
Any specific info, or personal recommendations, would be greatly appreciated. (Email addresses would be especially helpful.) Thanks!

Sydney vs Melbourne as a pedestrian paradise: I am a sociologist doing a study which involves observing pedestrians/window shoppers/etc. I am based in New York City, which is fantastic for my field of work. In Feb/March, I plan to go to Australia for two months, to either Sydney or Melbourne. I have never been to Australia before. QUESTION: Which city has more of a "pedestrian culture"? That is, which is more of a "walking city?" (If you know New York City, my favorite place to observe is Union Square -- I am looking for a comparable location.) Would prefer a place filled with locals, not tourists. Thanks!

Seeking anecdata about the Howard Florey Institute in Melbourne! I might have a lead on an interesting project there, but nobody in my network has any experience of the place - does anyone on Mefi? Or could anyone introduce me to someone there who wouldn't mind answering a few questions via email? Thanks enormously!

next weekend, but I'm arriving a day early so I have a whole Friday in Melbourne with nothing to do. I've already been to the ACMI and The Espy, and I've got plans for the night.
I like old books, videogames, pinball, and neat bars.

Does anyone know any sections of rivers or creeks not too far out of Melbourne (Australia) that are very wide yet quite shallow? You know the type, like something you see in a documentary about Alaskan bears with pebbles on the bottom and crystal clear water. After swimming in an amazing river in West Virginia may years ago I've dreamed about finding a similar one over here.

Asking on behalf of my brother, who has just moved to Melbourne with his girlfriend. They are looking for a house to rent, and have been going through the usual real estate agents, etc. They were talking to a couple of friends of theirs, who were also looking for a place to rent, and who just found a private rental property (ie. through the landlord, not through a real estate agent) on Gumtree. My brother was wondering if there is some sort of website or centralised place to find private rental properties in Melbourne? [more inside]

In Friday's issue of The Australian
, the Entrepreneur
lift-out had an article about two (Melbourne?) investment bankers who fell foul of the GFC then started their own clothing business, based on a wildly successful business model from France - something about factory seconds, or end-of-season stuff from high-end labels. I think they have something like 250,000 subscribers, and last month they turned over a million bucks. What was the name of the Melbourne start-up and what was its French inspiration?

My social life was quite exciting when I first moved here during late summer, but lately it feels a bit stagnant at times. I'm looking for ideas of activities to get involved with, to make use of my free time and help me connect with new people (friends of both sexes, plus THE LADIES). [more inside]
