NYC-Filter... I am looking for some meeting space in NYC for a few meetings (probly 3 or 4 over the course of two or 3 months). The trick is, I would really like someplace that has walls of whiteboards for brainstorming. Does anyone happen to know if something like this exist either in the city or north jersey? My Google-Fu has failed me!

What are the most interesting conferences related to technology/Internet law or policy? You can include things that are tangentially related but would still be very helpful or cool to attend for someone interested in this area (e.g. Defcon).

I'm organizing a scientific meeting that will be held in late April. The attendees will be astronomers with a mathematical bent. We'd like to give them a "free" gift, but not the usual T-shirts and mugs. We thought of flash drives, but attendees probably have one already. Please give me your suggestions. Difficulty: (1) Can't spend more than $20/person. (2) Must have room for logos of five sponsors.

The regents of my university want to redevelop the land holding the student apartments where I live. There's a public meeting on the subject this Friday and I've signed up to speak. I'm fine with speaking in public, but I'm clueless about participating in local politics — never gone to a school board meeting or called my congressperson or anything. What can I do to make my comments as effective as possible?

I'm posting this on behalf of a teacher friend of mine who wants your ideas:
A university is developing an initiative in which pairs of professors, across disciplines, will meet up with small groups of first year students during their second semester to discuss themes of interest and promote intellectual engagement. These informal meetings will occur at least four times over a couple of months and can take place anywhere: in seminar rooms, in a dorm lounge, at a restaurant, at a professor's home, at an art gallery. So, what do we call these?

I've attended work meetings where a committee is formed to solve a problem. The problem is usually open-ended rather than specific. For example, increase employee satisfaction. I'm finding that everyone talks and very little gets decided / accomplished, and so another meeting is scheduled. A huge amount of time is spent going to these meetings.
Is there another way to accomplish things? Is there some new paradigm out there for small group information gathering and decision-making that at least appears to give a nod to group input?

Starting my grad school program next week (clinical psychology, PhD) and am joining a cohort of 7 others. Any suggestions on things to do (or not do) when meeting and getting to know people I'll have to work with for the next six years? I'd like to be friends with them, especially since we have all our classes together. But the chances of such a small group together so much so stressed without conflict seem doubtful to me. Other psych grad school advice is welcome too. Thanks!
