I want to go off psych meds but my family might not. Do I do it anyway?

Provigil vs. Adderall for ADD

I take Adderall for ADD, but am growing dissatisfied with it due to what feels like increasing tolerance and dependence, as well as a couple of secondary reasons. I want to talk to my doctor about switching to Provigil, and would like to hear from anybody who has any advice or experience to relate regarding the pros and cons of the two medications. Details within. [more inside]

Some questions about adderall.

I recently started on adderall for ADD-type issues, and I've got some questions about the effects it's having. I intend to bring them up with my psychiatrist when I see him next, but that won't be for a few weeks and I think it would still be valuable to get some outside perspective, especially from people with first-hand experience. A lot of this has to do with sexuality. Questions and details within. A bit long-winded. [more inside]

Drugs make my bipolar mom a shell of herself. She says it's worth it.

Extremely medicated mom: My mom has struggled with intense bipolar disorder for most of her life. She attempted suicide twice and has been hospitalized 3 times. For the past 3 years or so, medication has stabilized her moods, but at what appears to me to be a heavy cost. She's dulled and flattened to the point that she seems like only a small fraction of the person she was. It's hard for me to see her this way, but I don't know what I can do. [more inside]

Why are all my doctors overdiagnosing me with things I don't have?

I feel that my doctors are overdiagnosing me - psychiatrists, specialists, and even pcps. I feel like a lab rat or a trophy case for them - "here's one of my patients, she encompassed the entire diagnostic manual, ha ha!" What's going on? [more inside]

How to avoid multiple office visits for prescriptions?

I'm prescribed 30mg of Adderall XR for my adhd. I was diagnosed and prescribed it from the psychiatrist that my job's health insurance uses. He says he can only prescribe it to me one prescription at a time. My high co-pays are adding up and its becoming costly to have to go every time. My doc tries to help by giving me two scripts at a time (one with the correct date and one a month out) but I'm still shelling out a lot six times a year to get my prescribed medication. I completely understand that Adderall is abused in the US and there needs to be controls on how its dispensed. I wouldn't mind going every six months so he can check up on me and monitor my use of it. Usually our appointments are 15 min chats about my mood and any side effects I may be experiencing. I'm no MD but that hardly seems worth an in office visit. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Is there a way around this?

Unemployed, uninsured... how do I get my medication?

So, I recently lost my job and, by proxy, my health insurance. I'd been seeing a psychiatrist for over 2 years, when I was employed and insured. Together, we found a good combination of medications that worked for me and my particular brain chemistry. Now, I am running out of medication and don't know what to do or where to look for assistance. (I'm 23 and live in New York City.) [more inside]
