looking for stories of meds or alterna-meds that helped you in ur brain

hello world. I am having a pretty terrible time with my brain. Since lobotomies didn't end well, really, I am looking around for other options. Certainly I should get right on top of exercising, and meditating, yes.. I agree.. working on that.. do not think meds are the whole answer.. but hope that they sort of be a little crack in this whole moras, which might enable me to be able to.. do all the other things (eg exercise, meditate, take care of myself, be easier for others to be around, and for me to be around, etc.) ok.. more below the fold [more inside]

Is my SSRI working? Too much or not enough to increase the dose?

I was just prescribed Zoloft for anxiety and possible depression. After I've been taking it for 1, 2, 4 weeks or whatever milestones make sense, how can I determine whether it's actually working., and how do I decide whether a dose increase might help me more? I'm looking for specific challenges - exposure exercises, though experiments, daily logging maybe? - to attempt and compare with previous results to quantify my improvement. [more inside]

Can anxiety feel like this?

I find it difficult to articulate the way I've been feeling, but more and more I'm suspecting that things aren't right. I'm in my second year of grad school and I'm not getting things done fast enough, due to circumstances both under my control, and outside of it. I'm starting to think my problem might be anxiety, or depression. [more inside]

Paging MeFi Medical Sleuths!

Name that medication! Vaguely remembered medication from the early to mid-1980s. I was mildly depressed, feeling in a rut. I went to a Kaiser psychiatrist in San Diego, CA. He prescribed a small, white pill that I took for a relatively short time (don't think I refilled the 'scrip)--it was great, no side effects, just elevated my mood enough that I could do other stuff to help myself: started exercising, lost some weight, got out of the house more...just felt better. The records from that time are long gone--I checked. Any ideas about what it might have been? [more inside]

Lamictal for depression?

Is Lamictal effective for treating depression? I have a life-long history of depression with a 20 year history of SSRI use. They are effective. Recently I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and a new doctor, after one meeting has taken me off Zoloft saying it would make the mania aspect of bi-polar worse and Lamictal is the only treatment needed for depression. She actually said it was an anti-depressant. I know my depression is worse, getting even more so and, because of my HMO am having trouble finding a second opinion. Does anyone have experience with Lamictal as an effective anti-depressent?
