This is not the time to be randomly guessing

How should I structure my gradual return to full-time work after two months off for a psychiatric illness? Have you actually done this, and if so, do you have tips? Have you even known or heard of someone who did a part-time transition after disability leave? All advice sought in creating my return-to-work plan. [more inside]

Pre-existing condition technicality

My wife just purchased health insurance for herself. Today is her first day of coverage. She has been experiencing back pain and nerve pain in her leg for the better part of a week, however. If she goes to the doctor today and they send her for an MRI (which we're certain they will) and subsequently decide to do surgery (we think she has a slipped/bulging/herniated disc) is there a chance the claims processor at the insurance company will question paying for any of these services? Attack of the cold feet

I feel a bit stupid asking this, but this has been bugging me for a while: is there some illness that can affect women if they get cold feet? This sounds like an old wives tale, however my wife and mother-in-law get very animated about this, particularly with regard to our 8 year old daughter. Unfortunately I have never managed to get much more detail other than a vague mention of kidneys. My google-fu fails me with regard to even the mention of this as a myth, however I am willing to accept that there is some sort of feminine genitourinary complaint that men are not widely aware of. I would just be happier if I knew exactly what it was. [more inside]

Are my dad's doctors making him sicker?

This is my first Ask MeFi question, and I'm asking on behalf of my parents. My father is in reasonably good physical health but poor mental health, which may be related to the meds he's on and the "quality" care he's getting in the American "system". Are there some kind of additional resources for me or them to help make their way through the bureaucrat-ese and get some better care? And maybe some additional health care (or heck, elder care in general) resources I could find for them? [more inside]

Mystery diagnosis: What would make my mom allergic to my kids?

For the past two years, every (~8) time my mother and my immediate family (wife, three kids) have visited, my mother is struck with significant gastrointestinal distress somewhere between 12 and 84 hours later, most usually 60 hours (that is, 5 a.m. on the third morning), that lasts about two days. My mom is generally well and never suffers this ailment at any other time. [more inside]

The Mystery of the Cold Kidneys.

What could be the reason behind cold kidneys in an otherwise healthy person? Mr. Origami has cold kidneys, and has all his life, so has never given it much thought. He can be warm all over, but place a hand over the kidney area and it feels icy cold--and that's really the only time he notices it, when a normally warm hand or belly covers the area, or if he sits in a hot tub, and he's flushed with warmth. Calling all med students, past and present

Thinking back to medical school classes like Biochemistry and Pharmacology, how much foundational knowledge did you actually use from your undergrad courses in related subjects? Was it important to walk in being able to solve all of the kinds of problems you’d see in general chemistry and physics, or were concepts more important? I am trying to understand how much ‘general’ review is required for success before someone who has been admitted actually starts a medical school program.

How do foreign visitors find a local doctor in the USA?

I'm going to be visiting New Orleans with my kids. We try to go every year and this trip we'll be staying around a month. If I knew Dr. House, I'd ask him

(medfilter) asking for my girlfriend who's beginning to think she's crazy after the 2nd emergency room visit in less than a year where she's been told there's nothing wrong. Her primary complaint is stabbing pain on her right side, right at her ribcage. Sometimes radiating into her chest. Pain can go from annoying (most of the time) to debilitating. She states that she's had some kind of pain there for most of her adult life. I know you are not her doc but I'm hoping that the symptoms might ring a bell to someone. [more inside]
