For reasons too bizarre to go into, to get into a particular country a friend of mine needs to turn up at customs with 12 pounds of medical supplies. She's trying to minimize the volume and cost while at the same time making sure the supplies will be useful in a third world country. From a size/weight/cost standpoint batteries are the best we've been able to come up with, but we're not sure they'll be acceptable. Any suggestions for things that are definitely medical supplies and fit the bill would be very welcome.

I haven't been to a doctor in a few years, and I don't have insurance now and won't have it for 8 months or longer. I was wondering how much would it cost to go to a doctor with no insurance and what choices do I have in the NYC area? [more inside]
YANAD (or maybe you are), but yesterday morning I woke up with the tip of my right index finger feeling numb. It was localised just to this area and appears to have normal bloodflow (i.e. it's not pale or white, so isn't just a digit feeling a bit cold). Fast forward 24 hours and it is still numb, albeit today it is a bit tingly/pins and needles in the area when using that finger. It causes no pain and is more so just annoying as I am right handed and work on a computer all day, so after a day and a half it's a bit irritating. What's going on? [more inside]
I have to articulate my desire to become a physician, and I'm having trouble explicitly stating my motivations. I work in a hospital and have been shadowing doctors, so I know that they essentially use their understanding of medical science to make diagnoses and come up with a treatment plans. However, I'm curious to know how the "calling" differs between people who want to become physicians, and people who want to become RNs. [more inside]

I found a lump in my armpit and will be getting it checked out by a doctor. Unfortunately, I work in a contact-based job and my next contract is schedule to begin in August. My benefits, including health insurance, will be in place again at that time, but I'm uninsured during summer months. Is this the sort of thing that can wait until I have insurance again or do I need to go to the doctor right now? [more inside]
I have trigeminal neuralgia, aka "the suicide disease." Good times! I've been given four treatment options: lifelong heavy-duty medication, having a needle stuck into my face with a few months' relief, CyberKnife radiology, or microvascular decompression surgery. Which should I choose? How do I even approach this decision? Difficulty level: I want to get pregnant, but I don't know when. [more inside]
Long Story not soo Short. Spouse had long history of sinus infections - always causing time off from work - lots of antibiotics prescribed. This past early spring Dr convinced spouse to have sinus surgery and that spouse would be back to normal in like two weeks. After surgery recovery did not go well and in addition to add'l sinus infections that needed more antibiotics spouse was also treated a couple of times with prednisone (nasal sprays, etc.). Things really never really improved - after a few weeks started experiencing shortness of breath and chest tightness. This was not at all present before surgery. Battery of tests have been performed - everything from lung clot to asthma to now cardiomyopathy have been tossed around. And lots of tests have been performed with lots of specialists. It has now been three months and we are no closer to finding out root cause. [more inside]
I remember an old roommate told me that she had a job in a medical lab with a bachelor's in art history (not related to lab work). I have an Associates in Arts degree and am working on my bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. I will start volunteering at the medical lab in the hospital on Thursday. Are there any jobs in the lab for people like me? Maybe after I've volunteered for a few months? Thanks.
Note: I am the patient. Describing the symptoms is pretty difficult task but I will try to do my best. The patient has not felt normal since sometime in October of 2013. The best way to describe it is a feeling as if patient is about to get sick. That feeling as if a sickness is coming on but never really comes on. This feeling is often strongest at night and continues throughout the day and will be gone by night. This toxic/sick feeling that radiates throughout the body seems to come and go at times. The way modern medical therapies are going, it seems that decades from now it would be advantageous to have a source of your more youthful cells or tissue stored long ago and available if needed. So I should investigate storing some now, but know little about this. How do I find out which kind(s) of tissue would be the best choice to store, and how do I select a cryo-storage service with an excellent medical reputation for harvesting, storing and successfully delivering tissue in a medically-useful state? I have about 8 years worth of standard, and usually repeating (basic panels), blood test results. Right now I've got them logged in to Excel; I'm fine with having to enter results manually. At the least, I'm just looking for a format that shows side by side results by date for comparison and can be printed out in this format for health care professionals perhaps more cleanly than just Excel tables. I did my Bachelors (in Computer Science) in India and Masters in Computer Science in USA. I now intend to migrate to medical field and aspire to do a PhD or an MD in psychiatry or any other branch of study in medicine. Can anyone tell me if there are any premier institutes in India or abroad that might have my credentials as an eligibility criterion for an admission? Thanks in advance! [more inside]

I am having trouble getting in with my doctor to review my results, so I'm looking for some initial info to see if it is worth pursuing. I had a glucose tolerance test done because of some symptoms that I'm having. I realize that these results aren't indicative of diabetes because they dip, but they do seem low (though I'm no doctor). Test 1: 95 Test 2: 85 Test 3: 55 Any idea whether I should be trying to schedule with my doctor? I live in a rural area, so it takes quite a trip for me to visit with the doctor.

I was diagnosed with 90% stenosis of my carotid artery with dissection near the brain. The neurologist said I should immediately see a neurosurgeon to have a stent put in. The neurosurgeon had the opposite reaction and said I should just go on living my life as I always have, taking aspirin every day and if I have stroke symptoms to go directly to E.R. He also said I was high risk for stroke without the surgery, but if I would constantly worry about getting a stroke, I should just go ahead and have the surgery done. I really don't want surgery, (does anyone) but everyone I talk to is stunned that the neurosurgeon had such a nonchalant attitude about this condition. Now I don't know what to do. Follow the neurosurgeons advice and just let it go or have the surgery?
You Are Not My Genetic Counselor, But Neither Are Any of these Self-Styled Uncertified Genetic Counselors on the Internet. The latest fad/quackwatch for desperate parents and patients dealing with autism spectrum disorders or chronic illness seems to be running raw data from consumer genetics testing through an app (or paying hundreds of dollars more for a "nutrigenomics" panel) to check for polymorphisms. Consumers get back lists (helpfully color-coded like traffic lights) of normal, heterozygous, and homozygous gene pairs, but how common are these variations to begin with (setting aside how often they are actually expressed as illness)? I have frequent ear problems, getting psoriasis in my ears, or impacted earwax, or sometimes a mild case of swimmers ear, or sometimes just pain due to my TMJ. My doctor and my ENT has gotten annoyed at me going in to see him so much (almost monthly) due to ear pain and usually just says my ears look fine. I need a camera to look inside my ears to see whats going on before I go to the doctor. I have watched alot of videos of peoples ear problems and done alot of research and know what what to look for and will go to the doctor if there is something wrong with my ears. I have a otoscope I bought but don't have anyone to look into it for me and I cant do it myself. Is there someway to hook it up to a camera or webcam? Or does anyone know what camera they use in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5m8XTATcus (skip to 0:42)
Have you ever had a lithotripsy? I got one (torso) on Monday for kidney stones, and while things seemed fine for the 48 hours following the procedure, starting yesterday afternoon I've been experiencing intense, radiating pain in my upper legs and hips. Enough that I can't sleep, even with hydromorphone painkillers. I've left a detailed message at the urologist's, but while I wait to hear back, I'm wondering if this is something in the realm of "normal" or "super weird" or even "Emergency room stat". This is Quebec, so I'm not incredibly optimistic about the doctor getting back to me promptly, either. [more inside]
I work at my local County Hospital and for the last two weeks we've had a very low census. I hear rumors that the local Giant HMO and local For Profit Hospital Chain are packed right now. I also know one Local For Profit but Independent and Unaffiliated Hospital is at risk of closing right now because of extremely low census. So for folks who actually work in hospitals (and clinics?) are you seeing a change in number of patients since Obamacare started? [more inside]

Asking this on behalf of a close friend: "What do I do when a person I do not want to be close to is dying, or believes they are dying, in close quarters?" Her roommate has diabetes and has developed significant kidney issues, and is very upset and scared. Complicating factors: my friend expects that the roommate will be unable to pay his share of rent and bills, and she does not have the means to cover them on her own. Also, she has very sound reasons for not being emotionally close to him.
Just received a voicemail from a breast surgeon's office confirming my wife's appointment tomorrow. Problem? My wife has told me nothing of this. I'm kind of pissed. My first reaction is to pick up phone and be angry about her hiding this from me, but then I took a deep breath and tried to figure out why I don't know. I don't want to cause a huge fight if she has something serious medical going on, but WTF? FWIW, my wife has a history of abnormal mammos and was biopsied once before and everything was benign. I'm going to call her shortly, but don't want to bring anger to table...how do I do that? Signed, Concerned but angered
How do you keep track of your health information? Having lived in a dozen different places during the past decade, I've lost track of all of the doctors and specialists I have seen. Hey. I've had a kidney infection before, years ago. Now my kidneys ache, I'm suddenly (as of a couple days ago) nauseous all the time, and apparently I've had many/most of the symptoms of kidney disease for months now and just didn't put the pieces together. I have an appointment for Monday morning to see a doctor at my usual clinic. Am I okay to wait a few more days or is this an emergency room situation? Is there anything I can be doing in the meantime to feel less awful? [more inside]

Hi Mefites. I'll be starting an online medical coding and billing course in January ( given by the AAPC), after graduating from a relatively well respected state school with a psychology BA in May and finding out far too late in the game that it would leave me with nil in terms of job prospects. After building up quite a bit of credit card debt and deciding that man cannot live on Hulu and Facebook alone, as I've been doing for six months, I decided to look into opportunities that required relatively little training to get started with, and happened upon medical billing, something that seems to fit me quite well. I'm tempering my enthusiasm however, because no amount of Googling seems to give me a clear sense of my path once the course is over. Help? [more inside]
I just started seeing a rheumatologist for my ankylosing spondylitis. She suggested a long term NSAID rather than just taking ibuprofen as I had been doing. She prescribed two options: diclofenac, which I tried, and Indomethacin, which I have not yet tried. I have questions about the new drug before I start it but my rheumatologist won't be able to respond for about a month. Should I see my family doctor or a pharmacist with questions about the new meds? Are either likely to be really familiar with a random medication?
