No medical insurance in NYC

I haven't been to a doctor in a few years, and I don't have insurance now and won't have it for 8 months or longer. I was wondering how much would it cost to go to a doctor with no insurance and what choices do I have in the NYC area? [more inside]

Can I wait for two months to go to the doctor for this?

I found a lump in my armpit and will be getting it checked out by a doctor. Unfortunately, I work in a contact-based job and my next contract is schedule to begin in August. My benefits, including health insurance, will be in place again at that time, but I'm uninsured during summer months. Is this the sort of thing that can wait until I have insurance again or do I need to go to the doctor right now? [more inside]

Spouse has "condition" or does not?

Long Story not soo Short. Spouse had long history of sinus infections - always causing time off from work - lots of antibiotics prescribed. This past early spring Dr convinced spouse to have sinus surgery and that spouse would be back to normal in like two weeks. After surgery recovery did not go well and in addition to add'l sinus infections that needed more antibiotics spouse was also treated a couple of times with prednisone (nasal sprays, etc.). Things really never really improved - after a few weeks started experiencing shortness of breath and chest tightness. This was not at all present before surgery. Battery of tests have been performed - everything from lung clot to asthma to now cardiomyopathy have been tossed around. And lots of tests have been performed with lots of specialists. It has now been three months and we are no closer to finding out root cause. [more inside]

Looking for advice for a 27-year-old that wants to go to med school

I currently work in software engineering (my background is in finance and computer science) and am thinking seriously about giving med school a stab. I'm less interested in getting into the reasons (though if you have comments on that I'm open to it), and more interested in advice and resources on making the transition. I feel terribly old to do this, but there's no time like the present, right?! [more inside]

My Kidneys Hurt And I'm Freaking Out

Hey. I've had a kidney infection before, years ago. Now my kidneys ache, I'm suddenly (as of a couple days ago) nauseous all the time, and apparently I've had many/most of the symptoms of kidney disease for months now and just didn't put the pieces together. I have an appointment for Monday morning to see a doctor at my usual clinic. Am I okay to wait a few more days or is this an emergency room situation? Is there anything I can be doing in the meantime to feel less awful? [more inside]

Surgeons: What are you looking for in a midlevel? Interview help.

I have an interview this week - last minute - with a surgeon. I'm a newly graduated midlevel provider with minimal OR experience but I really, really want to get some. This physician is, at least what I've been told since the screening on the phone with his assistant, willing to train the right person. What might he be looking for if he's willing to train a new person? [more inside]

How and when to change doctors when a medical malpractice action is pending?

My ass, it's sore.

How can I treat a minor pressure sore on the right side of my butt, right where the bone is? I sit all day and all night...I do exercise every other day and I do try to relieve direct pressure by laying on the floor and playing with the dog at night. However, at least 12 hours a day of sitting/working in front of a computer trumps all that. I have good office chairs but the one at work (which would take an act of congress to replace) has bottomed out. Guess I'm looking for a several things to do...gel cushion options if any discreet ones are out there, topical treatments, whatever anyone may have found that works.

Atypical Glandular Cells of Undetermined Significance

My wife's PAP just came back showing "atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance". We are both concerned, and I'm having a hard time finding any useful information about what this is likely to mean in terms of prognosis, treatment, etc... So far, everything I've found has been either too superficial to be helpful or too dense to understand. Can anyone point us to some fairly in-depth information that won't overwhelm us with medical-speak? At this point, we're both scared, and any information at all would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
