Spouse has "condition" or does not?

Long Story not soo Short. Spouse had long history of sinus infections - always causing time off from work - lots of antibiotics prescribed. This past early spring Dr convinced spouse to have sinus surgery and that spouse would be back to normal in like two weeks. After surgery recovery did not go well and in addition to add'l sinus infections that needed more antibiotics spouse was also treated a couple of times with prednisone (nasal sprays, etc.). Things really never really improved - after a few weeks started experiencing shortness of breath and chest tightness. This was not at all present before surgery. Battery of tests have been performed - everything from lung clot to asthma to now cardiomyopathy have been tossed around. And lots of tests have been performed with lots of specialists. It has now been three months and we are no closer to finding out root cause. [more inside]

Anyone else experience similar chronic illness symptoms?

Note: I am the patient. Describing the symptoms is pretty difficult task but I will try to do my best. The patient has not felt normal since sometime in October of 2013. The best way to describe it is a feeling as if patient is about to get sick. That feeling as if a sickness is coming on but never really comes on. This feeling is often strongest at night and continues throughout the day and will be gone by night. This toxic/sick feeling that radiates throughout the body seems to come and go at times. Migrating to Medicine from Computer Science

I did my Bachelors (in Computer Science) in India and Masters in Computer Science in USA. I now intend to migrate to medical field and aspire to do a PhD or an MD in psychiatry or any other branch of study in medicine. Can anyone tell me if there are any premier institutes in India or abroad that might have my credentials as an eligibility criterion for an admission? Thanks in advance! [more inside]

How do you organize your health records?

How do you keep track of your health information? Having lived in a dozen different places during the past decade, I've lost track of all of the doctors and specialists I have seen. Realizing as I filled a prescription that Walgreens still remembers things about me from college that I had forgotten, I want to get organized. [more inside]

I might finally come to be worth something to society! Maybe...?

Hi Mefites. I'll be starting an online medical coding and billing course in January ( given by the AAPC), after graduating from a relatively well respected state school with a psychology BA in May and finding out far too late in the game that it would leave me with nil in terms of job prospects. After building up quite a bit of credit card debt and deciding that man cannot live on Hulu and Facebook alone, as I've been doing for six months, I decided to look into opportunities that required relatively little training to get started with, and happened upon medical billing, something that seems to fit me quite well. I'm tempering my enthusiasm however, because no amount of Googling seems to give me a clear sense of my path once the course is over. Help? [more inside]

Please help me find a wellness escape where I can recover (East Coast)

One of my oldest friends just died and I'm feeling serious Crohn's pain starting to creep up again, threatening my remission. Everything in my life right now is stressful and exhausting, and I know that if I do nothing I will have a full-bore flair on my hands by thanksgiving. I need help finding a health resort/ wellness retreat on the East Coast - optimally between DC and Boston. My wealthy uncle says money is no object, so my only real stipulation is somewhere that isn't too scary/isolated for a young woman alone. [more inside]

I was at Panera and accidentally chewed and swallowed a plastic fork tine, approximately an inch in length. It may have broken off while I was using it to break and pick up a crouton, and I didn't notice what I'd chewed until I looked down at the fork. That was 8 hours ago. [more inside]

Foreign tongue depressors

Let's say you have medical condition ABC that can be treated with XYZ and you live in the United States. How does one become a medical tourist, defined by going outside the country for XYZ? It seems unlikely your doctor will acquiesce to sending you out of the country to get treatment with another doctor. How does the process begin, where patients can connect with the right doctors and facilities to arrange treatment? How do people evaluate the quality of treatment and follow-up care? Are there medial tourism "groups" that specialize in particular health issues? If you did this, what was your experience like and what recommendations would you have for issues or "gotchas" to look out for? [more inside]

Botox injections and neutropenia

Are there risks in having botox injections for a neutropenia sufferer? A relation of mine is determined to have botox injections to get rid of wrinkles, however, they suffer badly from cyclic neutropenia which means that their immune system is often weak and have white blood cell issues and consequently they get infections frequently. I am aware that botox is botulinum toxin and I have kept trying to persuade her to see her doctor before having botox injections, to check whether they are safe for her in light of neutropenia. She is desperate to go ahead with this and it is hard to persuade her to get medical advice on this. From a layman's perspective, I am concerned that this may be dangerous for her. Does anybody with medical knowledge, perhaps haematology, know if this botox is safe for neutropenia sufferers? Many thanks!

I just don't want to be "the girl with the messed up hand" for the next two months.

I have De Quervain’s tenosynovitis. I have to wear a brace on my wrist for the next long while. All the braces I've found are hideous and scream "SMPA is injured and has no style," which is taking me right back to that time when I was a kid in school and I'm hating it (and don't get me started on the bowling jokes at work.) Are there functional yet cute or pretty braces out there? What is the solution to this, besides "suck it up, you should have paid more attention to ergonomics?" [more inside]

Pre-existing condition technicality

My wife just purchased health insurance for herself. Today is her first day of coverage. She has been experiencing back pain and nerve pain in her leg for the better part of a week, however. If she goes to the doctor today and they send her for an MRI (which we're certain they will) and subsequently decide to do surgery (we think she has a slipped/bulging/herniated disc) is there a chance the claims processor at the insurance company will question paying for any of these services? The Mystery of the Cold Kidneys.

What could be the reason behind cold kidneys in an otherwise healthy person? Mr. Origami has cold kidneys, and has all his life, so has never given it much thought. He can be warm all over, but place a hand over the kidney area and it feels icy cold--and that's really the only time he notices it, when a normally warm hand or belly covers the area, or if he sits in a hot tub, and he's flushed with warmth.
