My family spent the past 6 months living in the Caribbean where there is a Zika outbreak. During that time my wife, child, and I have all had unexplained illnesses which symptoms may have pointed to Zika. My spouse and I want to have a second child, so we have mothballed our life in the Caribbean and moved to the East Coast. We want to get tested for Zika before conceiving, I'd like to know if anyone has had experience with how to go about doing so, expediently. According to NYS doctors/state health departments/CDC they mandate that either: a) the woman is pregnant or b) the man is symptomatic before administering the test (note: only 1 in 5 men show symptoms...). We can travel to a different state to get tested. Does anyone have experience with getting Zika tested and how to do so without having to go through a ridiculous eligibility process?
I broke my elbow bad enough that required a plate a couple of screws. A couple of months later I had said plate screws taken out. I was lucky enough to keep all hardware and currently have it sitting in a box. The plate it's self is about 7 inches long and has a slight curve that went around the tip of my elbow, with all screws varring in length from 1 inch to 4inches . I'm looking for something creativity to do with the hardware now, any ideas are helpful. Thanks
Now that I have a disabled placard and use a cane on a semi-permanent basis I've come to the conclusion that it is time to person-up! and accept that I need to make and accept accommodations in my life to support my breaking body. Looking for suggestions of things I can buy/utilize that will make daily living less of a struggle. Considering the details inside what are the key things I should be doing to make this life easier on myself? [more inside]

I am trying to sort out using medical marijuana for chronic pain and I had no idea when I started out that it would all be so vague and experimental. I am now finding myself with things that I have tried and will not use and assume I cannot return. I hate just tossing 4 taffy bars that are just too high in THC for me. Yes I tried tiny bites. Hated it. [more inside]
How do I review, audit, question, and negotiate this stack of medical bills? Employer-based insurance that is a PPO. It's decent. But the hospital's billing department, not so much... Lots and lots of individual bills. Most valid, but some may not be. [more inside]
[Posted on a friend's behalf] I am researching schools for a 2 year degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Though there are limitless wormholes about "top schools" I haven't been able to deduce which ones possess both quality programs and a balance of cost-effective places to live while obtaining this degree. I have a background in the visual arts and am now in my mid-40s, so this is an epic step forward in viewing the Big Picture. [more inside]

Friend has multiple sclerosis (MS), recently a lot worse. She's deciding between treatments: Lemtrada, or a hematopoietic stem cell transplant at the Clinica Ruiz in Mexico (since it's incredibly expensive and doing it abroad is 1/3 the cost of getting it done in the US). Anybody have research, info, or personal experience with these treatments or this clinic? Do you know any really good MS support/info groups?
(standard YANMD) I've had on and off aphthous ulcers my entire life since I was very young, they are not something new to me. But for the past 2-3 months, I've had them continuously. As soon as one starts to fade, a new one shows up. This is new, and it's driving me insane. I cannot think of what's caused this change, and I'd appreciate help brainstorming what I could investigate. [more inside]
(Asking for a friend) We're trying to find a service that will fly my dad from the Phoenix area to the Dallas area, with a medical attendant. Uncertain of an exact diagnosis yet, but it's either complications from stage IV lung cancer or congestive heart failure. Heart and respiratory monitoring would be necessary, although he does have a DNR. (Don't know what difference that makes.) He is currently hospitalized but may be released in the next couple days. We need to find a way to get him home without the 2-1/2 day drive, and he likely cannot fly commercial. [more inside]
YANMD. I've had digestive issues for the past few months. Went to the gastro doc, and he did a CAT scan of my abdomen and an endoscopy. He said I look healthy, but my stomach is enflamed. He recommended dietary changes (which did work for a little while—I gave up coffee). So he felt that it was just a minor digestive episode. Since then things have flared up again, I've gone to a holistic health person, and they have me taking mastic gum, digestive enzymes, L-glutamine, and probiotics. [more inside]
I've recently decided that I want to pursue a career in medicine. I'm leaning towards becoming a PA but my father feels strongly I should become an MD. Can you please help me weigh the pros and cons? [more inside]
My left eyelid has been swollen for about a year. Last year I had my first bout of eczema (atopic dermatitis) that hit my left eyelid. I went to the doctor thinking it was an eye infection, and was prescribed a 2% hydrocortisone creme. That seemed to work, but I have been dealing with on-and-off eczema in various spots ever since. However my left eyelid later got infected, and I went to my dermatologist and got some antibiotics which took care of it-- but the swelling never fully went away. It's not active eczema, it's not infected... my dermatologist and opthamologist have no idea and no suggestions. It isn't red or painful or itchy, and I haven't noticed anything that makes it worse or better food-wise. I definitely notice it's swollen, I can feel it when my eye is open. It's also very apparent in the mirror and in photos. Any ideas on what this is or what to do about it? Or even what kind of doctor to see?
Bedside manner issue. My dentist is fantastic in every medical and practical sense, but he speaks to me like I'm a mentally challenged farm animal. How might I address this with him, and would it help? [more inside]
When I was a very young kid in the 60's, doctors' offices often had these detailed calendars with tiny elves or hobbity kind of creatures hanging on the wall. I think they were issued by a drug company, but my Google skills are failing to find them. Anyone remember these and can you supply a link to examples? Cheers.
I recently saw a neurologist for my chronic cough, which has been diagnosed as neurogenic by a cough specialist. The appt was one of the worst medical experiences I've had. While I don't know if he did anything illegal, I'd like to report him somewhere. I'm also wondering if there's a way to get out of paying him. More inside. [more inside]

A friend from out of state (US) has asked if they could use my address to be considered to be in my city's insurance network, thereby saving them a lot of cost. I realize this is insurance fraud. I'm going to turn them down, but what would be the potential ramifications if I didn't?

I got married recently. Now we're working through the Life Event Change processes of our respective companies. Here's the puzzler: If I'm reading this right, at my company, Medical is $90/month for myself, $300 for myself+spouse. At my wife's company, it's almost the same. This implies that it would be cheaper for both of us to be insured separately than together. What am I missing here?

My husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea after a sleep study in April. Ever since, we have been on a nightmare ride with a medical supply company called Carecentrix. Billing for the CPAP device and its accessories (mask, tubes, filters) is an obscure and mysterious process. What is the best course of action after seeing how poorly this company is rated by the BBB and customers? [more inside]

When studying, how do you find a balance between obsessively picking through every little detail to the point of burnout and falling back on a definition of "good enough" that really isn't good enough? I would especially be interested in suggestions for a context where there is a lot of reading thrown at you with little structure, like graduate or medical school. Any suggestions on how to structure such material without wasting time or burning out?

A family member, 26 years old, "C," is currently hospitalized in a behavioral health unit in another state. They want to discharge him this week. He wants to return to Northern California for treatment. More below the fold. [more inside]

I recently suffered a near catastrophic medical experience and am having emotional difficulties dealing with the aftermath. I had been ignoring symptoms for days and only went to hospital because my spouse and kids were leaving town for a few days and figured what the heck, go to the ER, it would be a pain for them to come back abruptly. At the hospital, I had emergency surgery that was unnecessarily risky (I'm an experienced medical professional, so please, assume I know what I'm talking about) in that it could have led to an intraoperative complication that would have left my 5-year survival at less than 25%. I also would have been in the same boat if I chose to ignore my symptoms. In the end, surgery was successful and what was thought malignant turned out to be benign. I have some lifelong medical follow-up to pursue, but for all intents and purposes I'm OK know. So what's my question? [more inside]
