How do I find reputable, factual, unbiased sources of information? Anything from breaking news (global or local) to current issues to scientific studies. I'm looking for the kinds of sources that will give a good overview or analysis of a topic, and then show me their sources so that I can investigate further if I wish. Websites and printed sources are the most helpful for me as a student, but I welcome any suggestions. [more inside]
I'm looking for "what-if" websites that combine words, imagery, and other media to project cool science or exploration concepts onto the web. Two examples I have are here and here although I'm open to more than just Mars exploration stuff. [more inside]
I have an older Gateway PC acting as my media center/file server. I have it hooked up to a 42" 720p Samsung Plasma TV via VGA from the on-board connection on the PC. As such, the resolution is not very good: 1024x768 and the picture doesn't really fit on the screen. Can you recommend a cheap video card (under $50) that will let me connect via HDMI and show things at a decent resolution without stretching or cropping the picture? No gaming, just playing video files.

I've been looking at Media Studies grad programs and the most attractive I'm come across is the Media Studies Masters at the New School. The catch is, I really don't want to move to NYC. Does anyone have experience with the New School's online MA programs? I've only been able to find one blog post about doing this particular program online, where the student was sort of defending it like, "This is NOT University of Phoenix!" Or thoughts on online MA's in general? I've taken one class online (through MassArt) and I learned a lot, but never felt like "Dang! That was a great class!" Which may or may not have anything to do with it being online....

Have olympic spoilers always been this bad? I'm so so very annoyed to already know the outcome of tonights gymnastics, just like I've inadvertantly known the outcome of almost every event I am interested in so far in these games. Even though I try to avoid the obvious spoiler media outlets, I can't ignore everything; esp not elevator tv's, the radio, or overheard coversations at the cubicle farm. Are the days of sitting on the edge of my seat during the evening broadcast, jumping for joy at an unexpected gold over? Or has it always been this way and I'm just catching up now?

A friend is looking for US-based podcasts that are interesting, different, and NOT produced by white dudes. This is for work on podcasts as a medium for material that doesn't fit into "traditional" radio categories and as a place for experimentation. She's finding lots of great stuff, but says with the exception of "Longest shortest time", they're all by white guys. Do you have any recommendations for US-produced podcasts that are experimental, interesting, and from a different perspective? Thanks a lot!

If an alien located on a planet 100 light years from here was to switch on a big, multi-frequency radio receiver, and record all the noises coming from outer space for the next hundred years, on all frequencies, how many soap operas, advertisements and new broadcasts would they pick up from Earth? Would a mass-market radio, similar to our Earthly equivalents, pick up anything? Over time, as the number of Earth transmissions increases exponentially, would the alien pick up a cacophony or a damp fizzle? [more inside]
