A few years back I remember reading an article that talked about female characters in media, specifically that a fifty-fifty split of men and women was seen as "mostly women", and a lower ratio (1/3? 1/4?) was seen as "even". I seem to recall "The Simpsons" was used as an example? Maybe it was just mentioned. Anyway, I would like to read that article again but my google-fu is failing me. Halp?
I began a Kickstarter last week and it exploded, reaching its funding goals in 2 days, 6 hours. I've started adding stretch goals like mad, but I'd like to use the overwhelming response to get some media attention. How do I do that? [more inside]
Maybe I am just old-school, but I really enjoy getting well-curated newsletters in my e-mail inbox. My favorite is NextDraft, and I also enjoy Harper's Weekly Review, The Quartz Daily Briefing, and Quora's newsletter (that is apparently customized to my activity on their site). What do you look forward to seeing in your inbox on a regular basis?
Traditional marketing says blanket your market with repetitious ads for the new people who haven't seen it. I have a project I want to promote and attract attention to. Although I won't send out a tweet or a post every minute, should I make repetitious posts on Social Media too? Is there a good balance?
Previously, I have used Adobe Media Encoder to convert hundreds of varying video files in to one common format. Works great. Set it and forget it. A godsend. Now, I have a folder of about 5000 WMVs (with a few MPGs and MOVs scattered throughout) of all different resolutions and quality. I need to convert them to MP4s, each the same resolution and quality of the file each original was. [more inside]
Please help. I work for a language school that teaches Mandarin Chinese to foreigners inside China. We specialize in one month intensive teaching for beginners. We want to increase our social media presence and have some (even though we do say so ourselves) excellent stand alone ideas to do this. They are educational free formats that allow people to study Chinese online in creative ways. We don't know the best way to present them though. Should they be 'onsite' options through our main webpage,or would they be better served as stand alone entities with their own page and an affiliation to our main company website? Any thoughts and shared best practice would be greatly appreciated.
I need recommendations for gendered representations of nature (e.g.: Gaia, Tellus, Terra, Mother Earth/Nature, etc.) in literature, media, art, children's books, or anything else. [more inside]

I have a huge, life-determining standardized test tomorrow. A bit of ear plug got stuck inside my ear this morning when half of it ripped out as I tried to remove my earplug. Now, my ear has started hurting a little, and I'm terrified! I'm highly prone to ear infections, and am fearful of waking up with one tomorrow. It would be a huge distraction during this 3 hour test that has required months of preparation! [more inside]
I am looking for international news coverage (All forms welcome, but print media preferred) of anything negative about Times Square. Trying to find news articles which would discourage someone visiting the US from going to Times Square. I have tried Google News and some basic internet searches, but of course it's hard to know what to even search for in other languages. I can get a budget for this, and I would love to hire someone to research it for me, but what kind of service do I search for? [more inside]
I have tried to get on the RSS bandwagon. Really I did. But it's just too much drama for me. I read The Morning News (www.tmn.org) everyday, and love that someone I trust chooses stories for me -- it's edited, focused, smart, and clean. Does anyone have other aggregators (or curators?) that are similar? (I'm trying Atlantic Wire with limited joy.)

Anecdotally, everyone I know hates watching information in video format, but all the online marketing stats (that are easily google-able), say that every demographic, across the board, prefers video. [more inside]
A year ago, I bought a new TV with HDMI capability and hooked it up to my PC to work as a monitor (with a straight HDMI cable connection). IT. IS. AWESOME. I just moved into a new place with more room and now want to connect my surround sound system (5 speakers) to this setup as well. This is the receiver I'm considering purchasing and from what I can tell, will do what I need. Extra potentially pertinent info:
- PC has two HDMI ports (one on the video card)
- Nintendo Wii connected directly to TV via RCA cables
- BluRay player connected to TV via HDMI cable
I have digital illustrations that I'd like printed out, framed and on the wall. I'm not sure where the best place to go is. [more inside]

Should I delete my LinkedIn profile? I currently have a low level, low wage job with the State government of the state I live in. I am looking for a new job that pays more anywhere in my town. I will be applying for a lot of jobs with the local state university. My friend recently got a really good job with the state university and when I asked her if she had a LinkedIn profile she told me she had never even heard of that site so she definitely did not need it. I am working on a list since 2004 that I think would be salable. It's publicly available contact information for radio, TV, magazines, syndicates, newspapers, book publishers and agents. I'm a freelancer and I originally started it because I wanted to be able to reach these sources to interest them in my content. But I realized it could be a product. [more inside]
I have two dream jobs: one is working as a producer at a small independent production company in NY, the other is being a casting director. I don't want to be some big hollywood producer, but I'd love to work at a smaller media company. Whenever I've managed to get a foot in the door somewhere, I've done well. There are two problems. One is I have no idea how to land an entry level position in such a company. The other is that I'm starting out late at the age of 29. [more inside]

Help me calibrate my "media impressions" scale. I'm frequently the recipient of internal company memos that describe the success of various marketing campaigns in terms of their number of media impressions. The numbers are typically in the millions or tens of millions. My problem is have no idea what is considered to be large campaign, either in absolute terms or relative to the size of the market being targeted. [more inside]

Am I wrong, or does the Boston disaster seem to be a bigger media deal in the US than the Texas disaster. Is it the terrorism angle, or is it that Boston came first? Or maybe Boston is just easier to cover?

So, I've recently inherited the community and social media role for the company I work for. Several friends and myself were sitting around draining the worlds supply of beer at the end of last summer, and decided to cap off the night by flipping on netflix. We ended up appointing someone to just pick a completely random movie just by the cover after a bit of arguing of what to watch... The trouble is, now none of us can remember what it was called. I'm interested in watching more documentaries or miniseries about the fashion/clothing industry. Three I've rented recently were Valentino:The Last Emperor, The September Issue, and Signé Chanel. I especially enjoyed the last two as they really showed a lot behind the scenes about how stuff is made (both the media and the couture dressmaking sides). [more inside]
I want to be able to stream whatever my computer is playing to another room in the house. In addition, I would like to occasionally stream videos to our old, but oversized, TV in another room. I started shopping and looking at media streaming bridges and wireless speakers and frankly it seems there are a bunch of options and I don't know where to start. It probably needs to go 40 or 50 feet away. I don't think bluetooth would work and the only things I own with an ethernet port are my computer and the wireless router. Can someone point me towards a good reliable sytem?
Please talk to me like I'm stupid. I have a bunch of video files (~5TB...so far) hanging out on a bunch of external hard drives. Right now I just take turns plugging them into whichever laptop I'm going to use to watch the videos. I'd like something a little more convenient and easily accessible from multiple rooms in my small apartment, but I'm not awesome at setting up networky things (I've never successfully gotten two different laptops in my apartment to even "see" each other over the wireless router). What should I do? [more inside]

We haven't had a proper TV in over a decade. I would like to have something other than my laptop to watch streaming media, DVDs, Netflix, etc. Can you explain how this works in 2013? I imagine we'd buy something like this Samsung LED HDTV and some kind of speakers. Then what? Do we plug it into a laptop? What exactly is Apple TV and how does it stack up against Roku? This seems like it should be a simple question, but I feel like a caveman emerging from the dark, and am fairly bewildered at all of the options and variations out there. [more inside]
