All lengthy anecdotes welcome :-) [Here's your opportunity to deny or confirm the suspicion that all twins love the Polish Brothers

I've overfilled my laptop and want to move files to external drives. But moving keeps getting stopped for various reasons (and what the hell is a cyclic redundancy??) and I'm going nuts. Please send me your speed tips and procedure suggestions! The specifics: Toshiba satellite running windows xp; total c drive size 55.8gb, free space 12.6. External drives: f (in fat 32 which I'd like to reformat to ntfs) has a capacity of 152gb, and has only 66.1 free. Newest drive g (i've just formatted it to ntfs) has a capacity of 111gb, with 103 left after my abortive attempts to put an image disc of c on it. Thanks ... [more inside]

The little triangles and squares used to identify control buttons on media players, both analog and digital; What are they called and on what product did they first appear? Would you call them tape-control glyphs? That's what I'd call 'em. But my google-fu is fruitless. You know - two right facing triangles means fast forward >>, a broken box means pause, etc.

Somewhat of a pointless question, how come Ashlee Simpson still gets media attention? She's not paticularly attractive, nor can she sing. To top it all off she was blatantly caught lipsyncing on SNL, yet she's scheduled (I believe to be on it again, or was on it a short while ago). Are differing media companies that well-connected? Are there any good open source media sharing/rating tools? This would be for the sort of thing where someone uploads WackyMovie.mov and registered users rate it. Then, the best movies bubble up to the top of their category, etc. (Plugins for WordPress also accepted...)

My birthday is coming up and what I really want is a portable media center. I want a device that plays all the major formats of video (without a lengthy conversion process -- this is key) and plays mp3s. I want for it to have an easy to use and good looking interface, small enough dimensions to fit into most pockets and at least 20 GB of storage space. My price range is $500 or less. And forget the iPod Video, as I understand it it will accept only .mov files (but please correct me if I'm wrong -- which I hope I am). Suggest away!

: Can anyone identify this TV ad that ran a few years back? A young man is packing up his car for college and his father is there saying goodbye. Very emotional. The mother is noticeably absent. The father goes inside to find the mother--not sad as expected--excitedly measuring up the son's room for a new hot tub that she's going to install. Can anyone tell me the company and/or a place where I could download the ad? Thanks.

I often get called to appear on the nightly news whenever they need a guy to talk about computers, the internet or blogging. This time, it's a piece about "how terrorists use the net to organize and plan attacks" to be aired in a series for the week leading up to 9/11. In my segment, I will use my Google-fu to demonstrate how easy or hard it is to dig up maps and blueprints, especially for "sensitive" places. I'm trying to make sure the facts get out there, but I also want to do my bit to counter any scaremongering. My question: Can anyone point to sites or articles that discuss whether or not such publicly-available maps, diagrams and blueprints are a real security risk?

need recommendations on mac's and tivo's home media. i'm trying to decide how to rout all my good music into my home stereo. seems i could do one of two things: send playlists etc through tivo home media or use the airport express to the stereo hub. our main router is actually a linksyss because we have a PC as well as a mac now so i guess i would have to get airport express for the stereo. my computer will all of my pictures and music is a new imac g5 and i think it already has a wireless hub installed/bluetooth (the whole nine yards!) what is the best way/easiest way/most reliable way to get music shifted into my stereo.
ps. the stereo is very far from the computer itself and cant be directly connected.
i've searched the archives on this question to no avail.
