Received a very old computer. It had the necessary hardware, so I decided to turn it into a music streaming server so that I could listen to my 450gb of music at anytime over my iphone. I tried to set it up with tonido, and everything worked well. The only problem is that their iphone app sucks and crashes like a mofo EVERY time. [more inside]

Please talk to me like I'm stupid. I have a bunch of video files (~5TB...so far) hanging out on a bunch of external hard drives. Right now I just take turns plugging them into whichever laptop I'm going to use to watch the videos. I'd like something a little more convenient and easily accessible from multiple rooms in my small apartment, but I'm not awesome at setting up networky things (I've never successfully gotten two different laptops in my apartment to even "see" each other over the wireless router). What should I do? [more inside]

What is the best (easiest) way to convert an IFO DVD file to MPEG4 which I am prepping to get something like this for my home network.
I wish to rip DVDs to a Linux server and then watch them at my leisure on my TV via either a wired or wireless network. There appear to be countless devices that will stream videos (like this) but I haven't been able to tell which will play DVDs off a network (with menus and all) and which just stream plain-old-MPEGs. Has anyone got experience with a digital media gadget that will do this?
Hardware/Media Dreams: I'm an A/V and computer enthusiast, and one of my dreams (sad, I know) is to have a computer-based server connected to my television that contains all of my (legally store bought) DVDs, so I can basically have a local version of video-on-demand. [mi] [more inside]
