After purchasing the Gawker Media assets, Univision will be shutting Gawker (as in the site) down in the next week. I have enjoyed reading the news, political coverage, and the championing of progressive causes in Gawker's often cutting, but humorous tone. SO! Where to next? [more inside]
I've filed a civil harassment order against a former college professor for stalking me online regularly in the last 4 years that has started to take its toll on me. [more inside]

Just curious if anyone has any strong opinions about switching to Media Temple -- which is owned by GoDaddy. Has GoDaddy improved its image or reputation or anything since I last checked (which was years ago)? Does it matter that GoDaddy and MT are run separately or not?
Hi, I'm trying to put together a week of lectures on Women in Refrigerators for my students and I have gone and found Gail Simone's old list and looked at Feminist Frequency's episodes for Bitch Magazine, and I have some passages from a myth textbook and Joseph Campbell's work. But I want to add one of my favorite podcasts, On the Media. I vaguely remember the host Brooke Gladstone talking to a guest once and she says that when she was younger and she remembers watching those old black and white movies like Perils of Pauline she remembers there being something vaguely erotic or sexual about the way that the evil villains would tie up the damsels in distress and leave them on the railroad tracks, and she may have said she wrote her masters thesis on it? But I can't find a thesis on Proquest or JStor that Brooke published, anyone with a fantastic memory?
I'm helping a performing artist friend with media outreach. I've been a reporter and PR flack before, but always on the print side and for organizations, not individuals. What should be in her online media kit that will be posted on her website? [more inside]
I need a free Android app that will allow posting and reading to a number of social media sites. Also, some sites I have several accounts, so I need access to all of those. [more inside]
The Internet appears to have swallowed an almost ten-year old commercial from the NYTimes about its (then new) Weekender subscription service, which included the famous "Saturdays, the word alone makes me happy" comment. It was parodied here by the 92Y Tribeca (RIP) and was then revised by the NY Times. I am, however, looking for the original ad that ran in 2006 (according to this Time article). Was even able to locate the abridged version of the commercial, but can't find the original. MeFi's can you help me save this from the internet rabbit hole?
In 10 days I'm going to visit a friend in Harare who is a foster mother to seven girls between the ages of 11 and 16. They all live on a farm in the suburbs and watch movies, play cards, sometimes read books in the evening. What are some enriching and inspiring books and movies for teenage girls to read and watch that I can bring for them? [more inside]
I am an instructor at a school, and one of the classes I teach is Life Skills for the high schoolers. We discuss everything from boundaries in relationships to financial literacy to how to change a tire. On Friday, I will be having my first absence, and I wanted to provide a video that is reasonably engaging and not patronizing but also appropriate for tenth graders. [more inside]
My wife has started doing some freelance writing, and her first story will be published in tomorrow's edition of our local newspaper. Yay! Unfortunately, someone in the editorial chain made several errors, including misspelling a simple word in a section they (poorly) rewrote, and misspelling the name of one of the subjects of the story in several of the photo captions. They also rewrote another portion into a bunch of short, choppy sentences that totally ruin the flow of the article. How should she respond? [more inside]
www.massplanner.com Googling mostly gets me info on planning a Roman Catholic service... Appears to allow for posting automation across all the major platforms, along with other bells and whistles. I can kick the tires on it and decide whether it's better or worse than Hootsuite - my major question for AskMe is - has anyone heard of it, and is it legit? [more inside]

I'm trying to e-mail a couple of .mp4 videos to my girlfriend's LG G3 Android phone. The first one worked fine, but both of my attempts of the second video are apparently an "unsupported file type." I encoded the videos myself from QuickTime .mov source videos using Avidemux, and I'm at a loss as to why one works but the others don't. (technical info inside) [more inside]
I stumbled my way into an associate editor position a year ago with no previous media experience, and have now been promoted to managing editor at the site. I'm successfully doing the job, but I constantly run into places where I wish I knew how "proper" newsrooms handled things. How do I learn? [more inside]
Calling graphic artists: I have a microfilm-derived copy of a newspaper article from 1873. The copy is poor quality, to the point where it's hard to read. I don't think any sort of simple image processing is going to fix it. I'd like to re-create the article from scratch, but I have very little experience in this area. [more inside]
So I was assigned Amusing Ourselves to Death as a freshman, and strongly disliked it; much of it was over my head, and my takeaway then was that he was merely a reactionary who believed "Print good. Electronic media bad." However, I'm older and hopefully smarter and I'd like to come at it fresh, and see if I can get more out of it. [more inside]
Our 17 year old cousin is coming to visit. He comes from a sheltered environment, not allowed to watch TV at home, and they don't have wifi. We'd like to enjoy some really good TV together. I'm looking for good quality shows that are sophisticated and fun, with minimal romantic/sexual content. On the kid's last visit, he really enjoyed the Firefly and Justified series. [more inside]
I run a small media company with a staff of five (two people on sales, two editors, one social media person). The salespeople have a low salary, high commission salary structure, and advertising deals are generally in the low-mid 5 figure range. Our social media person is interested in getting into sales, or more specifically, getting compensated for introductions that eventually turn into sales. We're happy to accommodate her but have no idea how to structure things. [more inside]
Any economics geeks out there who can point me to how the government calculates intellectual property now in GDP figures? Is there information on how they calculate the value of a movie versus a TV show versus a book? I've seen some articles that say news shows and newspapers don't count towards the intellectual component of GDP, but is there a thorough explanation anywhere?
I've got two media devices that both respond to the commands from either's remote; fatal (meaning return one of them for a different brand) or fixable in some other way? [more inside]

I have a huge, life-determining standardized test tomorrow. A bit of ear plug got stuck inside my ear this morning when half of it ripped out as I tried to remove my earplug. Now, my ear has started hurting a little, and I'm terrified! I'm highly prone to ear infections, and am fearful of waking up with one tomorrow. It would be a huge distraction during this 3 hour test that has required months of preparation! [more inside]
Anecdotally, everyone I know hates watching information in video format, but all the online marketing stats (that are easily google-able), say that every demographic, across the board, prefers video. [more inside]
A year ago, I bought a new TV with HDMI capability and hooked it up to my PC to work as a monitor (with a straight HDMI cable connection). IT. IS. AWESOME. I just moved into a new place with more room and now want to connect my surround sound system (5 speakers) to this setup as well. This is the receiver I'm considering purchasing and from what I can tell, will do what I need. Extra potentially pertinent info:
- PC has two HDMI ports (one on the video card)
- Nintendo Wii connected directly to TV via RCA cables
- BluRay player connected to TV via HDMI cable
Who represents learning disabled artists? Or how can I find blogs or catalogs that feature learning disabled or developmentally disabled artists working in any media? Europe and South America especially but welcoming feedback about the rest of the world. Thanks!

Help me calibrate my "media impressions" scale. I'm frequently the recipient of internal company memos that describe the success of various marketing campaigns in terms of their number of media impressions. The numbers are typically in the millions or tens of millions. My problem is have no idea what is considered to be large campaign, either in absolute terms or relative to the size of the market being targeted. [more inside]
Several friends and myself were sitting around draining the worlds supply of beer at the end of last summer, and decided to cap off the night by flipping on netflix. We ended up appointing someone to just pick a completely random movie just by the cover after a bit of arguing of what to watch... The trouble is, now none of us can remember what it was called. Is there a quick (or a quicker) way to download all files of a given type from the Media Library of a self-hosted WordPress site? The site in question has about 200 MP3s. I can easily sort out the MP3s by selecting "Audio." But how can I download them all at once? Is there a plug-in? FTP looks like a big pain, too, as these files are organized in folders by year and month, and there are several years here -- and many months with no uploads at all.
I graduated from music college in the UK about 10 years ago, and recently decided that while this time has been spent developing skills to augment my income as a freelance performer, I'd now like to consolidate those skills into a related career which would leave me more financially stable. For a long time now, I have been interested in becoming a music supervisor in the film/television industry, music researcher or working in a production music library. Whenever I have had any involvement with music rights or negotiating clearances, I've been fascinated by it but have never had the opportunity to have this as my main focus. How do I do this as someone who is not able to do long-term unpaid work experience/internships? [more inside]

How do TV channels figure out how many people watched a particular episode (e.g. XX million watched American Idol)?
How do TV channels figure out how many people watched a particular episode (e.g. XX million watched American Idol)? I often hear things like XX million viewers watched American Idol or some other show. How do the news guys / broadcasters come up with these numbers?? Surely they are not able to track what is being watched in peoples homes. So I guess this is some kind of math or projection. Any idea how this is done?
