Are there any schools that have something like a week-long auto repair course? Preferably BMW-focused, and preferably in the DC Metro area, but even without those two, would still be useful.

Help me diagnose my car's weird lurching problem. This is mostly for curiosity's sake, as I do plan on taking it to the mechanic tomorrow or Saturday. But I sort of want to know what I'm in for.

For about a week, I've noticed a "hot" smell coming from my engine. I don't know how to describe it except that it smells like an iron that has been left on. What is it?

Anyone know a good BMW mechanic in the Fort Lee, NJ (Near the George Washington Bridge) area? I have a 1988 325ix and need someone trustworthy and competent to take care of it. Service at the BMW dealer is outrageously expensive.
I've tried various BMW message boards and come up empty. Something in a 30 minute radius would be nice, but I'll take what you got!

My 1970 Dodge Dart swinger has begun making some odd noises and my current, very-good mechanic, can't figure it out. But he says it's nothing. For the first time, I don't think he's right. So I need to cheat on him with a new mechanic. A Dodge Dart specialist. Does anyone have any supremely talented classic mopar men in the Los Angeles area they can recommend?

Auto Mechanic Filter: What is preventing my car from starting? Happens about every 10th time I attempt to start. No click, no churn, but the lights (including those on the dashboard) work fine as does the radio. I get it going by rocking the front end of the car up and down, and back and forth for a few seconds. Head back in, turn the key and it starts normally.

After spending a cool $thou on 'general maintenance' from the dealer, I'm seeking an Atlanta-area mechanic/shop that would work on my 97 Infiniti I30 (which is mechanically near-exact to the Nissan Maxima).
I'm really looking for an indie mechanic with whom you might have personal experience.

How can I figure out what's leaking from my car? (And other maladies...) Does anyone know of a site -- like WebMD, but for cars -- where I can type in symptoms and narrow down what might be wrong with a car? I know that I can go to a mechanic, but sometimes the first question is whether it's even safe to drive the car to the mechanic.

I have a 1998 Honda Accord automatic sedan. When I am driving, it's pretty much fine...but when I stop at a traffic light or stop sign, the car starts to shake. When I start moving again, the shaking stops. If I am stopped (and the car is shaking) and I put the car in neutral or park, the shaking goes away considerably. Why does this happen? The one search result from Google that I thought would be useful points to a dead page. So I thought I would ask here. I just want an idea of what this could be so I can do some research before taking it to a mechanic and pretend that I know something about cars. And then maybe he won't try to trick me into getting things fixed that I don't really need to worry about. Thank you!

AutoFilter: In a moment of terrible mental absence this morning, I drove about half a block in second gear with the hand brake engaged. While the right rear wheel smoked and the brake glowed visibly red, there seem to be no other consequences an hour after the fact. Does this merit a call to the mechanic to check it out if other malfunctions haven't arisen?
