How to nail the GRE's

Open to any and all recommendations on the most efficient way to study for the GRE (focusing on writing and grammar). My GPA in college was meh (3.0). So I really need to have a nice shiny test score to go along with my floating-by transcript in order to get into top choice schools. Any advice on courses, sites, studying regimens etc. to go into this thing as ready as possible? [more inside]

online masters in library science

I'm planning to get a Masters in Library and Information Science. There are no schools that offer this program that are close enough to me at present. There are several online programs that are ALA accredited that I'm interested in. Does anyone have any experience with whether online masters programs are looked down upon when hiring in the library field? (Primarily looking at being a public librarian, if it matters.)

Letter of recommendation from department graduate?

I'm considering applying to an MS program in statistics at a competitive school. A guy I've worked with holds a PhD from the statistics department at that school, and I think he'd give me a pretty good recommendation if I asked him for one. But I'm unsure whether or not that's a good thing to do, as this fellow isn't a professor. [more inside]

What are some useful directions for grad school?

I'm an engineer with a career in software and I recently finished an MBA from a good school. I'd like to keep the learning going, preferably in something that complements my background, but I don't have any specific direction in mind. I guess I'm hoping that someone might suggest something that's entirely off my radar. What should I be thinking about? [more inside]

What's the deal with the MSL degree?

Goes by several names: Master of Studies in Law, Master of Legal Studies, Master of Science in Law. Wikipedia says: "a master's degree offered by some law schools to students who wish to study the law but do not want to become attorneys." I'd never heard of such a degree until recently -- is it present in the public consciousness? I read MBA or MFA and I have intuition for what those involve, but not so much MSL. [more inside]

How can I pursue a masters or pHD in Canada if I'm working a 9-5 job?

It's a huge hassle for anyone who has a 9-5 job and no savings to pursue a masters or a pHD in a reputable/respectable college or university, no matter what country s/he's in. If that's my case, how can I make it work if I live in Toronto, Canada? (I'm interested in reading your thoughts and experiences even if they're not about Toronto per se).

Help me figure out a career/educational path

I'm current at my first job out of school and have been here almost two years now. It hasn't been what I expected, and sadly, not in a positive way. It's a very niche field with limited cross-applications and, frankly, I have no interest in delving deeper into it. It's definitely time for a job, if not career, change. My dissatisfaction with my current circumstances, however, still leaves me with a myriad of other options that I'm having trouble narrowing down and I'd appreciate it if people could weigh in a bit and maybe resolve this analysis paralysis I'm having. 20's American in Japan, visa expires soon. Considering Grad school.

I'm a 27 year-old living in Japan teaching English, with my visa running out at the end of August. I'm trying to decide on what to do next - work (more) or pursue a Masters in Asia-Pacific studies. I am rather scatterbrained, and have no clue where to get started logistics-wise in going for a graduate degree. If I were to go down this route, I would also like to narrow down some career paths I could take post-graduation. [more inside]

Should I Keep Working Toward My Masters in Social Work? Now or Later?

In a nutshell: I'm almost 38 years old, happily married, and am currently raising 3 kids (the youngest is 9). I work full-time at a job that I love – and that loves me back - but which doesn't pay particularly well. My husband's income compensates for that. We are decidedly middle class with some debts, low savings, and a mortgage. I have a (Canadian) college diploma in social services that's a little over 2 years old at this point. I am trying to decide whether to further my education - and whether to do it now or later. [more inside]

Grad school application without GRE score? What are they looking for?

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Masters program in the next year or two in a specific field within my current career path. Since the program is fairly unique, the school isn't requiring a GRE score for the application (although it's a top research university in the US on the West Coast). So what are they looking for in my application? How does not needing a GRE score change things? Lots of questions! [more inside]

the New School's online degree programs?

Does anyone have experience with the New School's online MA programs? Or thoughts on online MA's in general? I've taken one class online (through MassArt) and I learned a lot, but never felt like "Dang! That was a great class!"
