Help me find some numbers.

I'm interested in doing data-based mashups. What are some really cool, deep sources of publicly available data? I realize I'm casting a wide net here, but I'm intrigued by the data mashup, and wonder (a) just how much, and how diverse, publicly available data is out there, and (b) where to find it.

So, just pulling some examples off the top of my head ...

* Obesity rates vs. shopping mall density
* Population vs. bankruptcies
* iPod sales over time vs. weather trends in a specific geographic area

... you get the idea. Anything goes. Is there a canonical list of publicly available data? Are there meta-indexes to indexes of the stuff? How does one go about keeping up to date with all of the numbers that are surely being published every day?

I've just discovered Kutiman on YouTube. Does anyone else come close to his mashup genius? He is an Israeli musician who apparently is new to his craft, but his work is awesome! The samples linked are of the R&B/Funk variety, not sure if he does anything else, but I love this stuff. If you know anyone else even close to being this talented, please advise. Listen to this and this and this. If this is the future of music, I am all aboard!

Mash-up making 101?

A beginner's guide to making a mash-up? How would one go about making their own mash-ups like the Kleptones or Dj Lobsterdust? I have experience with making music, and own a copy of FL Studio and Audacity. Without spending much (or anymore money) how could I start making my own mash-ups?

Major issues for me:
-How can I isolate vocals?
-Do I need to pay attention to the key of pieces, and if so, is there an easy (software) way to figure it out?
-Is there an easy way to figure out the Beats-per-minute of a piece?

Great mash-ups concerning political/social themes?

What are your favorite video and/or audio mash-ups that deal with politics or social issues? A good example of what I'm looking for: the "Vote Different" 1984 Mac ad/Hillary mash-up. Interested in both serious and silly examples. Thanks!

Google Maps info window too big! MUST CONTROL!

How do I control the size of the info window on my Google Maps? I'm using the "My Maps" function on Google Maps, but (at least in IE6) the info windows are at least 535 pixels wide, no matter how much (or how little) content goes inside.

That means when I imbed my map on a page and click on an icon, the info window overwhelms the map. Grrr.

In Firefox, it looks fine.

I've tried futzing with the HTML of the windows, but that doesn't control the size of the window itself.

Here's my test map.

I tried searching the google maps group and couldn't find a direct answer.

Help? Halp? Hope?

What songs/artists are out there that use older vocals over a modernized background track? Two examples of songs I'm thinking of in this vein are the first minute or so of Loo & Placido's Black Beatles and Away Team's Where Do I Begin; what else is out there in terms of this musical style?

Name that Kleptones vocal

The new Kleptones release, From Detroit to J.A.: where is the vocal on the final track, Revolverlution taken from? I remember hearing the original track on UK radio months ago, and making a note to find it, and then completely forgetting the name of the artist. Now the Kleptones have used it and I want to know who it is!

"The revolution will be scratched, spun back and sampled as a loop. It will appear as the red button on your remote control. The revolution will operate a jobshare or flexitime option, so you can have it at your leisure. Because the revolution will be digitised..."

Googling isn't giving me anything. Any clues?

What software/hardware do you use in creating mashups? The Wired CD has been released, and it's full of Creative Commons licensed material. It says on the site:

"Return to this site next week, and we will debut our new mashup community site, where you can upload the new tunes you build from these tracks."

I really want to participate in this. I just downloaded the new free Traktion, but I'm wondering what else people use? Any tips?

I'm a big fan of mashups, but only recently wondered what software people use to make them. Specifically things like:
A Night at the Hip Hopera, The Grey Album and more recently the Scummer Mix (scroll down for link)
Vocal stripping, beat matching, sampling, the ubiquitous handclap track... Help me AskMe, where do I begin?

Recommendations for titles, DJs and, if appropriate, locations of good mashups would be appreciated.

I know this will probably mark me as hopelessly behind the times, but I picked up The Grey Album yesterday, which reminded me that I finally have the hard drive space and internet connection I need to go find out about these mash-ups all the kids are talking about, or were talking about six months ago. Recommendations for titles, DJs and, if appropriate, locations would be appreciated. All I've got to date are the great Public Enemy/Herb Alpert remixes.

Strangely, I couldn't find threads about this since day one on MeFi proper. Anyone think I should take this discussion there?
