I've noticed that Lady Gaga likes to link up future singles with current singles in live performance. What other pop artists have employed this tactic? A couple examples: she snuck a preview of Bad Romance into her SNL performance of Love Game, and her recent AMA performance of Bad Romance seems to indicate that Speechless will be her next single. It seems like an insidiously clever, almost evil way of getting the public primed for her next release, like all her songs are mere fragments of some giant ur-pop song. Anyway, I figure she can't be the first person to use this tactic, just the latest to employ it with devastating efficacy -- so who else has done this? Who was the first?

In short, I'm looking for other pop artists who have combined two or more songs this way in high-profile performances. To clarify, I'm not looking for just any mashups or medleys, which are commonplace, but specifically instances where a non-single song is seamlessly linked to a current single in order to get listeners to pay attention. Links to video or audio are especially helpful. Thanks in advance, hivemind!

I really like mashups that juxtapose hip-hop/R&B/reggae with classic rock/radio pop. Some good examples are Girl Talk's music, this Biggie Smalls/Miley Cyrus mashup, and this Beatles/Black Eyed Peas/Ludacris/ etc mashup. What are the best executed and most fun ones you've heard?

I want to start DJing - specifically mixing and mashing songs and learning to scratch. I only want to make mixes for myself but might someday want to play for a house party if my skills improve. I need your input on equipment and how to get started! I love music but have no experience DJing so anything you have to share would be helpful. I spent a bit of time attempting to research it but feel totally overwhelmed by all the options available.

What controller & soundcard (or other equipment) should I consider? I've looked at the Vestax VCI-100, Hercules RMX and M-Audio Xponent so far but have no idea what would be best to get started. I want a controller that will be good for scratching. I'd like to spend less than $700 total.

What should I look at for software? Seems like Traktor and Virtual DJ are popular and support most controllers.

What should I do to learn the basics? Any good DJ forums that are beginner friendly?

Help me find a Halloween "video mash-up" for a kids party I am hosting a halloween party for a group of kids, ages 4-17. I have a great playlist of Halloween songs, Thriller, Monster Mash, Purple People Eater, etc. The room we are in has a large pull down screen and a projector. I would love to have a video playing on the screen that is a compilation of famous scenes from Halloween-ish kids movies. No audio needed, the music for the dance will be playing. I just would like to have something going on on the screen (Disney Halloween, ET, Ghostbusters, etc.) to add to the ambiance. I don't have the time to do this myself. OR do I? Does anyone have any ideas on where I could find this or easily (and legally) make one myself?

What are your favorite youtube mixes/mashups which feature streams of quotes from tv/movies/news etc. set to music? More specifics inside. I loved this recently posted video in this post . It features clips and quotes from Ghostbusters, Citizen Kane, The Simpsons, 2001 etc. etc. etc. set to a dance backing track, the quotes rhyme and sound like they have been auto-tuned to fit with the music. In a nutshell I am looking for more of precisely the same.

I also am a fan of things like ThePartyParty.com and auto-tune the news.

I would love your favorite videos which feature:
Lots of quotes.
Lots of juxtaposition.
A good dance/rock beat.
Absurdity.
Use of auto-tune possibly (not a deal-breaker).

I am not a fan of Lenny's Dental Plan or clips which originate from sites like YTMND I find them too repetitive. Also for clarity am I not looking for mashups of songs like Eminem mixed with Michael Jackson.

I have tried to find the cream of these myself but 99% of what I find is repetitive crap, so I have come to you. Hope this question is not deemed too slight by the mods.

Why do I want them? I listen to them constantly while I am working I find that they don't distract me, but somehow provide a relief for the boring work I am doing. They move so fast and have so many references in them that I don't get bored. The beat usually helps me to stay motivated.

I use ableton to create mashup mixes for friends as a bit of fun and would like to introduce some custom drums and beats to aid transition from track to track similar to girl talk, eclectic method, diplo etc. to take my mixes to the next level. Ideally i would like some suggestions for the following 1)Where to find the drum patterns for ableton that are similar to that Girl talk uses (these are usually very hip hop type arrangements) 2) What drum pack/drum sounds i should be using and where i can find/buy these 3) If any ableton premade packs exist that contain these sort of patterns and samples already

The key is that they should work and be great songs without any video at all. (I hope to add the audio tracks, sans video, to my music collection.)

Help me find mp3s of individual instrument tracks. I'm looking for individual instrumental tracks, preferably from songs that are reasonably well-known. If someone could direct me to a website where there is a good selection of these, I'll be very grateful.

I recently was able to get [my name].com, which I'm super happy about. When I was thinking about what I should put up there, I thought a great idea would be to aggregate / mashup all my various social networks into one digestible page. How can I accomplish this? What I'm sort of picturing is a landing page that has my lastest tweets, my flickr feed, a feed to a blog i contribute to, a link to my facebook, and a few other things on it.

Ideally, it would have the look and feel of what perspctv.com does (example of a mashup here), except I wouldn't necessarily need it to be live-updating.

I imagine working with Yahoo Pipes would be a start, but is there a way to have multiple pipe feeds on one page, like what perspctv does? Or would it be smarter to work with some kind of blog/CMS? Or is there some site that already does this that I can just plug information to (best answer!)? Or is this not really possible without extensive web programming skillz (worst answer D:)?

I guess I would understand if something like this isn't completely feasible, but I really hope there is a way.

What's this song? It was on US Top 40 radio in the late 80s. It's a mashup sorta thingie of musical styles, starting out with a big band playing "In the Mood" and moving forward through different popular music styles to the modern day. IIRC at the very end there is a brief return to a little bit of In the Mood.

Ideally the mashups are 2 easily identifiable songs put together; for some reason the only example I can think of at the moment is Missy Elliot over AC/DC's 'Back in Black', but as far as I can remember that was a white label that preceded the mashup craze by a year or so.

What do we need to make our first video mashup?

My buddy and I need help making our first video mashup -- we've never done it before. What programs do we need to make this on a Mac? We've got a doozy of an idea to execute, but have none of the technical know-how. Without spoiling it, we're looking to:

1) Rip scenes from a popular film that I own on DVD
2) Cut just those scenes from the film
3) Superimpose a still photo of another person's head over one of the actor's heads in said scenes.
4) Animate the mouth of that still photo as though it were speaking the dialogue -- sort of a Jib-Jab/South-Park quick-and-crappy style.

What programs do we need (both working on Macs) presuming that we're both very new to this and looking for something fairly intuitive? We're both super-familiar with Photoshop, if that knowledge translates at all. And we're only looking for something Vimeo/Youtube quality, nothing too hi-res.

I'm trying to lead a crusade for government to publish it's statistics and data in a way that is mashable. Is it possible to define a standard digital format that could apply to a diverse array of data sets? The sort of examples for which this might apply are crime statistics, bus and train travel times, recent house sales, mapping data etc.

If it were possible to define a standard, what would it be and how could you describe it to people without an IT background?

Google Earth: controlling from external application?

Is it possible to track things such as user movement and button clicking in Google Earth? I am wondering if anyone has come across mashups that do this. I know that if you have html or flash clips that you imbed into popups, that that could easily be tracked, but what about how the users are flying around? - users not directly using your part of the application par se, but Google's?

I am thinking that if this was to be possible, the whole Google earth could have to be controlled from an external application. Is this possible right now? Would this be something that adobe AIR would be capable of? Some other technology?

If this is not possible in GE due to API restrictions is it possible in Google Maps?

Why can't I watch Hitler mashups? If you prick me, do I not bleed?

How do I view the Hitler mashups that were just deleted from the front page -- from within Germany? This post got deleted just before I could make this comment:

Wow, you want to hear something funny? I live in Germany and I can't see any of these videos. I get a message saying "This video is not available in your country." I'm computer-illiterate...does anyone know how I can get around this?

I'm genuinely curious now...can't I see these videos somehow? I logged out of youtube and I managed to find and erase a cookie file called something like "youtube[2]" -- but still, no dice. Also you get bonus points if you know the backstory as to why I can't see them. I know that Nazi literature is semi-forbidden here, but since when does this extend to youtube mashups?

I'd like to find some tutorials or general guides for editing and creating music on the computer. I'm very interested in mashups and making music out of other music, but I honestly don't know what I'm doing. I got a copy of Ableton Live from a very generous musician friend of mine for my birthday a while back and I've been using that to put stuff together. I can put together some basic A+B vocal over instrumental deals, but that's about it.

I can't do anything fancy and I'm sure I'm missing things due to my relative lack of experience with audio effects and methods. For example, just last week I discovered how to consolidate a cut-up track and make it loop without having to deal with all the pieces, which seems really obvious in hindsight.

What I'd love to find is a guide that takes me through the creation of a track, showing off what X effect does, how to do Y cleanly, ending a track successfully through Z -- that sort of thing. Otherwise, I'd like to find some general tips and methods.

Where can I find some awesome hip-hop mashups? For most of my life, I've been sorta "meh" on the whole hip-hop thing. However, all of this changed when one of my friends introduced me to The Kleptones' "A Night at the Hip-Hopera" and DJ Dangermouse's "The Grey Album." It turns out that a part of my brain responds ecstatically to high-quality hip-hop set to music that I love.

What blogs/websites/DJs should I be familiar with? Sites with downloadable material are especially appreciated.

Also - as a side note - does anybody know of a good (Windows) utility for downloading MP3s from blogs? Winamp has a feature that's supposed to do this, but it never works for me.

Where can I find the mashup from few years back that played radiohead and carly simon and nickleback and many more "artists" whose songs all sound almost identical? one track would play in the right channel the other in the left for comparison purposes. It contains the hilarious nickleback v nickleback mashup.

Help me find a Google Maps mashup to replace Wayfaring (for personal use). I set up a Wayfaring account about a year ago and started entering in all the places I'd been in the world.

Today I realized that one of my places had been marked (by me) in the wrong place on the map. But when I tried to move it I couldn't figure out how. Then I couldn't find any help docs whatsoever in Wayfaring. Then some Googling led me to find out that Wayfaring seems to have been somewhat abandoned, both by the developers and the public.

I have no clue what's out there to do this now. I've heard of Platial and Google's own My Maps, and I have no idea what the differences are. Can you provide some guidance on the pros and cons of these? I just want to mark the places I've been, and perhaps create a timeline showing WHEN I've been there, where I've lived and how long, etc.

Most importantly, I want the joint to still be around in 2 years ...

FYI, I'm a little leery of any Google service that requires that I get a GMail account.

I'm working for a political campaign who wants to produce a Google Maps application for their website showing the impact of the issue in various neighborhoods. I've played around with the Maps API just a little bit, but not enough to really pull this off on my own. My question isn't so much how to do this from scratch, but rather if there exist any kind of pre-made framework to quickly build Google Maps apps/mashups. Ideally, this would allow a voter to enter their address and see relevant locations within 10 miles of their home. Any advice on where to get started with this? And if the best answer is "hire a professional," that makes sense (though we're trying to keep this in-house as much as possible).

Music Filter: looking for pairs of mashups where one uses song A's music and B's lyrics, and the other uses B's music and A's lyrics. The only pair I've encountered that comes close is "Rockerfaction" (Rockafeller Skank lyrics, Satisfaction music) and "Satisfaction Skank" (Satisfaction lyrics, Rockafeller Skank music, but only for part of it).
